"The journey is worth it"
We received a nice note from Maiken Himmel RN, BSN - Employee Nurse Navigator at
Baptist Health Floyd
asking if we might want to consider a patient testimonial she received for our newsletter. She said: “It’s short but sweet”. Here is what she received from one of their patients who is part of their Poindexter analytics-powered nurse navigation program:
“
I am certain this sounds crazy but each time you reach out I feel like this journey is worth it. Thank you for the support.
”
|
|
It certainly is rewarding to hear positive feedback from those who are on a journey toward better health! Influencing people to make better health choices is
never
easy, and obviously Maiken and her team are doing a great job with it. Congratulations on making a difference with this, and so many other patients through your programs! We are beyond proud to be partnering with you.

Poindexter Enhancements
Identifying Newly Diagnosed Members
|
|
Poindexter now makes it easier for you to identify members who have been diagnosed with a new condition and have had other changes over time.
For our Poindexter users, below are the steps for how to access that level of detail.
- Login to Poindexter and open the Predicted Risk report in the Clinical report menu.
- In the filters at the top, select “2 time frames”, enter the time frames you want to see below that.
- Click the Generate Report button.
- Enter a name for your report and click the Submit button. User Hint: It’s always a good practice to give your report a name that will help you identify it easily in your My Reports list.
- You will see a message that your report has been sent to the queue – click the button to go to your My Reports area to retrieve it (you may also access your reports via the left-side Poindexter menu).
- Once your report is ready, it will have a “Completed” status in your My Reports. Just click on the Report ID link to access it.
- Once the report opens, click on the 2nd Risk Drivers button to expand the report to that area.
- You will now see a list of nearly 100 risk drivers within your population, and in the “Members w/ New Driver From” column, you will see a count of the members with a new driver across all of those categories.
- Just click on the number of members in the “Members w/ New Driver From” column to get to a list of members who are new to that Risk Driver category.
- From here, you can also click into an individual member’s longitudinal member view to get full details on each individual.

Our readers have shared that they appreciate us sharing recaps of tradeshows and conferences we are a part of. In the spirit of this, our Rick Scheel wanted to share this recap from the February HCAA Executive Forum.
|
|
Rick Scheel, APH’s VP of National Sales
The central theme of the conference was the new reality –
“We are All Self-Funded Now.”
Given the steady rise in healthcare costs and continued shifts to higher employee out of pocket costs, all constituents – including members – are experiencing self-funding to one extent or another.
|
|
There were many informative speakers at the event.
Dave Chase, co-founder of Health Rosetta
discussed their opinion of the healthcare system’s consumer impact. Here are interesting facts he shared: 70% of those filing bankruptcy due to medical bills had insurance; Middle class is in a 20 year income decline; Middle class spending on health care has increased 25% since 2007; Opioids - worst addiction crisis America has ever seen and Over half of millennials’ income is slated to go to healthcare.
|
|
Dave went on to offer some high-level solutions: Transparent Pharmacy benefits; Major Specialties & Outlier Patients; Transparent Open Networks; Value-Based Primary Care; Independent, Active Plan Administration; High Performance Plan Design, Docs and Risk Mgt and Transparent Advisor Relationships.
Another valuable presentation was delivered by
Paul Gallese
, a Senior Clinical Fellow for the BDO Center for Healthcare Excellence and Innovation. He led an interesting discussion entitled “
Constructive Disruption: Data and Technology as driving forces for healthcare delivery change
”. He focused on how the TPA industry can cope with “impending massive change”. At the heart of Paul’s message was new partnerships poised to disrupt the industry yet again, as well as the critical nature big data plays in not only retrospective analysis, but more importantly future predictive models.
Many of the presentations and conversations at the conference revolved around areas Advanced Plan for Health and Poindexter cover for our clients today – advanced and predictive analytics delivered with actionable insights that make a measurable difference in lowering costs while increasing quality.
If you have any questions for Rick or Denis about what they learned at this event, please email us at

|
Sadly, yes.
So many health and wellness-related programs today are pinpointing one area of disease, such as diabetes, and providing advice and support for just that one area without taking into effect a holistic picture of the person receiving support. Programs are not as effective this way, and often the members are just ‘checking the box’ in taking their health plan’s calls and texts in order to get the promised rewards.
