DEVELOPMENT

Old Post Office
Ferrara Candy Co. will relocate its corporate headquarters to Chicago's Old Post Office from Oakbrook Terrace next summer, bringing almost 400 jobs to the massive structure straddling Congress Parkway.

Jane Byrne Circle Interchange
Reconstruction of the Jane Byrne Interchange, which started in 2014, will take until 2022. IDOT engineers warn that the biggest impact to traffic is coming in the summer of 2020, when a major ramp will need to be closed. This is the ramp from the inbound Eisenhower Expressway to the northbound Kennedy Expressway, which sees 26,000 cars a day. Click here to see the full Tribune article.

National Teachers Academy
On December 3, 2018, a Cook County judge granted a preliminary order to block Chicago Public Schools' conversion of National Teachers Academy to a high school. Schools officials said they won't appeal the ruling, which means NTA will remain open. Click here to see the full Sun-Times article.

Proposed Red Line 15th Station
Related Midwest has proposed a new Red Line station at the southeast corner of 15th and Clark to serve the development it's calling "The 78." Significant infrastructure stacked up beneath Clark Street makes it very difficult to put the station-or even its entrance-on the west side of Clark. Because the subway is so close to the surface at this location, a station entrance building could let daylight reach all the way to the platforms. Construction would require excavation of Cotton Tail Park, though work could be staged to keep about a third of the park open throughout the process, and afterward rebuilt with improvements desired by the neighborhood. The projected cost of $300 million would come from a new TIF district covering Related's property and the station site.

At a meeting Dec. 17 at Daystar Center, a number of Dearborn Park II residents expressed opposition to the station. Let us know your thoughts on this proposal.

Chicago Women's Park and Gardens Street Construction Update
Per Alderman Dowell's newsletter: During construction to fix a longstanding sewer issue within Chicago Women's Park and Gardens (1801 S. Indiana Ave.), the contractor encountered unexpected underground issues in 18th St. just east of Indiana Ave. This has caused delays in the project as the project managers attempted to find a way to quickly fix the issue while causing as little disruption to the Women's Park Fieldhouse structure as possible. Below is a rough estimate of the stages and time frames for completion of this project.

The contractor has been able to close up the partial street opening. Work will begin in the plaza after the street work is complete. The 18th St. eastbound lane will need to be utilized for staging and construction and will remain in use for approximately 3 weeks total. Temporary restoration work will be completed after the repairs to the sewer lines are made with full restoration of the decorative pavers occurring in the spring. Neighborhood impact from construction should end by approximately December 28th.
