A Letter from the Director...

"Bad libraries build collections, good libraries build services, great libraries build communities."  R. David Lankes

One of the best aspects of my job as the Library Director is that I get the opportunity to witness the strengthening of our community. A few days ago, I was working in my office and I could overhear two men talking. Although I could not see the pair, it was obvious by the tone of their voices that they had never met before and represented different generations.

The conversation started in a very awkward fashion as they began to learn about each other. However, the conversation grew quickly as they talked about football, the upcoming weekend of scheduled games, and the football legends they admired. The conversation was lengthy, filled with questions of each other and laughter. It made me smile.

These two men are examples that our community is strengthened by the library. It is quite possible that the paths of these two individuals would have never crossed if it were not for the library. The Nazareth Library is the heart of our community, come see for yourself. Visit us this fall and experience the programs and services we have planned. Check out our new movie, book, and magazine selections. Come for fun, information, but most importantly, come to be a part of the community!

See you at the library!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Barbara Fischl,
Library Board President

This month's Library Spotlight is on Barbara Fischl, Nazareth Library Board President. In the narrative below, Barbara talks about her involvement with the library and the service offerings she finds most valuable.

" I commuted to the Philadelphia area throughout my career, so I joined the Friends of the Library in 2002 to get involved in my community. I subsequently became aware of the importance of the library board's role and joined the board in 2007.
"I have been a lifelong reader. I mostly read nonfiction, especially books related to people and events in European and American history. But, I also enjoy fiction and read historical fiction and mysteries. There are so many books that have affected me, even as a child; I can't possibly pick one as the best or most important. I never know how a book will impact me. Sometimes the significance or relevance is immediate, and other times not apparent until years later.

"The two things I like best about the library are its accessibility and the potential it offers to everyone. I am in a book group at our library and one at another library. I borrow some books from our collection and buy others (to donate afterward to the Friends book sale, of course!). I also utilize the library's DVD collection. Two software programs offered by the library that I have not yet used, but are on my "to do list," are Ancestry.com and Rosetta Stone.

The variety of resources beyond books, such as software, online programs and events, that are offered to our community for free amaze me. I wish more people realized
how much the library has to offer!"

Mary Sue Balm, Woman's Club Member

The Nazareth Woman's Club is looking for civic-minded ladies to join them, as they support the Library and other nonprofit organizations in the area.

The Club will hold a membership drive at the Library on Wednesday, October 10, from 5 to 7 pm. There will be wine and cheese, and members will be on hand to discuss the various projects the Club undertakes each year. In addition to the Library, the Club supports the Nazareth Food Bank, Gracedale and Operation Smile, among others, and provides a scholarships to a Nazareth High School student and a monetary award to a student at the Career Institute of Technology.

The Club holds a monthly meeting, which is an opportunity to meet with others in the community and enjoy a fun and informative program. At the October meeting, Nazareth resident Ellen Abramo discussed her "Las Vegas Portrait Project." Abramo recruited artists from across the country to paint one of the 58 people killed in the mass shooting there on October 1, 2017. In November, members will learn the benefits of yoga and massage when a certified yoga/wellness instructor visits, and in December there will be a Christmas concert by Nazareth High School's Nightingale choral group. The 2019 meetings will include learning to play Bunco, seeing a play at Hunterdon Hills Playhouse, and participating in a murder mystery.

For more information about the organization or the membership drive, call Sharon Bonner at 610-759-5968.
