Sherman Sponsors Assaults, Spartanburg Criterium

Sherman College of Chiropractic served as sponsor to two major cycling events in April and May. First, the college was a sponsor for the 15th Annual Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Criterium, a closed-circuit, multi-lap cycling race through Downtown Spartanburg. The Criterium turns the heart of the city into an extravagant tailgating party to watch cyclists race around the half-mile downtown course. This race is a part of the USA CRITS Speed Week series and is known for its open-air plaza center, dangerously sharp left turns and unique atmosphere.

The Sherman College of Chiropractic Health Center served as Cyclist Care + Support Sponsor for the 2019 Assaults on Mt. Mitchell and Marion. The Assaults is one of the most intense, premier cycling experiences that draws a full field of approximately 900 cyclists from across the world each year. The Assault on Mt. Mitchell is a one-day, 102.7-mile challenge that takes riders from Spartanburg, SC, to the top of the highest peak in the east, Mt. Mitchell; its sister ride, The Assault on Marion, stretches 74.2 miles from Spartanburg to Marion, NC. Sherman College student Emilio Castrillon of Colombia competed in the Assault on Mt. Mitchell. The college has a long history of involvement in this race, with many students working water and refreshment stops along its route through the years.

Sherman, TLC Offer Free Seminar for Alumni

Because alumni showed an overwhelming interest in Sherman College’s Graduation Plus 10 (G10) practice success curriculum after hearing about Sherman's partnership with TLC, Sherman College is gifting TLC’s Lean, Clean and Green program to alumni!

The goal of Lean, Clean and Green is to educate the chiropractor on meeting the high standards of care and record keeping in the modern practice. The program places emphasis on being lean (little waste of time and resources), clean (consistent with national compliant program standards), and green (encouraging a sustainable practice and practice growth).

Lean, Clean and Green will be held November 2-3 in the Gelardi Student Center on Sherman’s campus. Find all the details on our website.
Departing Trustees Recognized

Sherman College President Edwin Cordero, D.C., recently recognized Tony Lawhon, Esq., Peter Kevorkian, D.C., and Daniel Knowles, D.C., ’96, in grateful appreciation for their years of leadership and their devotion to Sherman College through service on the college’s Board of Trustees.

“Each trustee provided a unique leadership role of influencing the future growth and development of Sherman College,” Cordero said of the departing members’ service to the college. “We are extremely thankful for their dedication to Sherman College and their hearts for service and the chiropractic profession.”

Drs. Knowles & Kevorkian served two full terms, from May 2011-2019 (8 years). Knowles served as board nominations committee chair, and in that time a number of valuable trustees were brought on to serve the college; before his second term expired, he transitioned off as committee chair but continued his efforts to support the nominations committee.

Lawhon served on the board for 5 years, from March 2014-2019. He was instrumental in assisting with the implementation of board governance processes and provided ongoing expertise regarding legal services.
Alumni Recognize Seay, Thomas

During its annual luncheon at Lyceum, the Sherman College Alumni Association recognized two college employees for their service. Association President Jaime Browning, D.C., ’09, DCCJP, presented recognition awards to Alumni Association Treasurer and Sherman College Director of Student Clinics Claudia Seay, D.C., ’80, and Assistant Director of Advancement Services Patti Lee Thomas in appreciation of their exceptional support of the Alumni Association and the alumni as a whole.

Browning also shared the Association’s appreciation for Thomas and her work to build relationships within the organization and keep accurate records. “Patti juggles a lot of responsibilities in her role at Sherman,” Browning said. “We are grateful for the time she dedicates to the Association’s requests for information and her assistance in data organization.”
Kicking Off Lyceum with Golf

(Submitted by Professor of Clinical Sciences Bill Fehl, D.C., ’83)

This year’s Lyceum Golf Tournament brought nearly 30 students and D.C.s together on Wednesday of Lyceum week to help kick off the festivities of Sherman College’s annual homecoming and continuing education event.

The group played at Village Greens Golf Course, a nearby course with beautiful creeks and water features nicely placed throughout. We chose a Texas Scramble for this year’s format, during which everyone hits their own ball after choosing the best tee shot. The score was capped at double par. Next year, we will cap the score at double bogey to speed things up. See more pictures.

Winners received special prizes donated by the Sherman College Bookstore. Winners included Anthony Abeid for longest tee shot in the fairway and Connor Johnson for overall lowest score. Four players also won prizes for closest to the pin on the par 3 holes. We look forward to an even bigger turnout next year, so start making your plans now. Hope to see you there!

Land Honored, Joins Community Efforts

Vice President for Institutional Advancement and Public Relations Ohmar Land, D.M., was recently honored with the Founder’s Award from the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund ( CHASF). He was recognized during the fourth annual CHASF Gala on April 13 at the Mint Museum in Uptown Charlotte. The mission of CHASF is “To make certain that every child living in our public housing communities has both the opportunity for and an expectation of a college education.”

The Founder’s Award is presented to an individual who through their years of patronage has supported the scholarship fund with their time, talent and treasure. Land served as the fund’s first executive director and helped raise more than $3 million for the organization. As a result, 100 students can attend college in perpetuity. He continues to serve as a mentor for students in the program and contributes financially and in other ways to the organization.

Land has also been working diligently to immerse himself in the Spartanburg community since joining Sherman College last year. Earlier this month, he graduated with the 2019 Leadership Spartanburg class. Leadership Spartanburg is a nine-month course from the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce designed to better prepare leaders and volunteers for community service through exploration of issues, challenges and opportunities facing Spartanburg County now and in the future.

Finally, Land has been selected to serve on the Board of Directors for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Upstate, part of the oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization in the United States. According to the organization’s website, Big Brothers and Big Sisters has led one-to-one youth service for more than 100 years, “developing positive relationships that have a direct and lasting impact on the lives of young people.” The organization serves children ages 6-18.

Preventing Burnout: Transformative Teaching and Learning

In recognition of Mental Health Month this May, Director of Teaching and Learning Billie Harrington, Ph.D., has led a series of interactive small group sessions for faculty and staff on the subject of job burnout. The Teaching and Learning Center offers a variety of “Teaching Talks” throughout the year to support the faculty, but this topic was deemed timely and applicable to the entire campus community.

As defined by Mayo Clinic staff, job burnout is a special type of work-related stress – “a state of physical or emotional exhaustion that also involves a sense of reduced accomplishment and loss of personal identity.” In alignment with the Office of Student Affairs and its efforts to raise awareness about mental health among the student body, Harrington sought to address this topic with college employees.

“Job burnout has the potential to impact each and every person on our campus,” Harrington said. “My goal is to provide support and resources so our campus community can examine this topic more closely and prevent burnout so we can best serve the college, its students and its mission.”

Chair of Diagnosis and Case Management Department Rebecca Boles, D.C., said the session was helpful. “Job burnout is a topic that is not often addressed, and I appreciated being able to discuss the reasons we all get burned out in a non-threatening environment,” she shared. “It was helpful because it allowed us to form strategies such as reorganizing our work day to better serve how we are most productive and in control of our day.”
Health Center Names Intern of the Month

The Chiropractic Health Center faculty recognize an intern each month who excels in clinical performance, patient management, professionalism, and analytical and adjusting technique. The April 2019 Intern of the Month is Julia Hartman, a twelfth-quarter student from Wake Forest, NC. She graduates in December 2019 and plans to practice in Charleston, SC, with Andrew Quick.
