Recognizing her contributions to our understanding of the impact of drug addiction on the brain, Nora D. Volkow, MD, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, will be honored with the Cura Personalis Award on Tuesday, November 13 at the Eleventh Annual GUMC Convocation.


The hallway of the Pre-Clinical Science Building buzzed with excitement as doctoral students shared their work with members of the GUMC community and enjoyed a keynote by an award-winning journalist on Student Research Day.


A hunger simulation run by the Capital Area Food Bank helped students appreciate the varied circumstances surrounding food insecurity in Washington, D.C.


Averaging more than 1,200 tracked entries every day, Dahlgren Memorial Library's commitment to meeting the evolving needs of the students it serves has helped make it one of the most visited medical libraries in the country.

 




After his election in 2017, the Honorable Mark Dybul, MD (C'85, M'92), was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine at their 2018 annual meeting. Dybul, a professor in the department of medicine and faculty co-director of the Center for Global Health and Quality, was one of 80 new members elected to the Academy, which recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

The traffic pattern through the Lombardi circle has been reduced to a single lane through Wednesday, November 7 to accommodate construction of the new MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Medical/Surgical Pavilion. Honoring his long-term dedication and leadership in support of the development of family medicine, Jay Siwek, MD, vice chair and professor in the department of family medicine, has received the John G. Walsh Award from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). Siwek previously served as chair of the department of family medicine. He was also the editor of American Family Physician for nearly 30 years. Read the announcement here.

On November 4, Subha Madhavan, PhD, associate professor in the department of oncology, director of the Innovation Center for Biomedical Informatics (ICBI) and chief data scientist for Georgetown University Medical Center, will be inducted as a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI). A research team led by investigators from Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center has published the results of a mouse study that shows how changes in mammary glands to accommodate breastfeeding use a molecular process believed to contribute to the survival of premalignant breast cells.

Early results from a first-of-its-kind study by researchers from the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University Medical Center suggest that typical use of a family planning app called Dot is as effective as other modern methods for avoiding an unplanned pregnancy.

 




Georgetown University, in collaboration with edX.org, a leading online learning destination, has launched a free online course, How the Government Works & How to Get Involved. Led by expert Georgetown faculty, the MOOC draws upon the University's strengths in government and public policy while leveraging the edX platform to extend opportunity to learners across the country and the world.
