STORM READINESS & PLANNING FOR POTENTIAL EVACUATIONS THIS SEASON

Dear SBMS Families,

With rains in the forecast for this week and surely more to come this fall and winter, we know there is great concern for what this means for our community. Until vegetation returns to the hillsides in our county, forecasts of rain mean the potential for evacuations for those in the risk areas, stretching from Santa Barbara to Carpinteria.

Our teachers and staff are trained in safety response procedures, and we will make all efforts to remain open (unless our campus is in an evacuation zone or otherwise deemed unsafe for us to be here). By remaining open, we bring a sense of normalcy for children who live in an evacuation area while also serving the students and parents who live outside these zones. Should conditions change, we will update our families as quickly as possible.

Please know that every decision we make is with the safety of our students, parents, and teachers in mind. In addition, we are always in close contact with local fire and emergency officials as well as the Sheriff's Office as events occur.

We estimate that nearly 20% of our families may live in or near an evacuation zone. If we can assist in helping find places for you to stay, rides to school, or anything else, please let us know.

Should Highway 101 close this season, we understand that your family may have difficulty getting to/from school or from locations to where you may have evacuated. Please plan accordingly with thought given to how you can safely drive to/from the SBMS campus.

We hope all of our families are familiar with the county's local storm preparedness website, Santa Barbara County Ready . It is a great resource and we hope everyone will take time to read through their extensive tips and preparedness recommendations. Please see the links below, which we hope will help you and your family as you make decisions regarding safety and evacuations.

Thank you to our tremendous community, our first responders, and our families who have given so much this past year. If you need any help or can offer assistance, please let us know.

With love,
Brian & the Teachers /Staff of SBMS
