2019 Alumni Awards - Call for Nominations

It is now time to start thinking about deserving alumni for this year's awards. In conjunction with these awards, McNicholas also will host a special event on October 7, 2019, in the CafĂ© and Student Union to present the awards. (Archbishop McNicholas was ordained a Dominican priest on October 10, 1901.) The following day, October 8, the recipients will be introduced to the students at an all-school assembly.

Selection
The McNicholas community may nominate candidates for this award . If you nominated someone last year, we still have his or her name on file. All three awards will be selected by a committee of school representatives.  Nominations are due by June 15, and the committee will announce its selections in July. If you would like to nominate someone for this year, please  click here.

Awards
The Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented annually to one male and one female McNicholas graduate who have honored McNicholas High School with their outstanding professional achievements, volunteer activities, and community-organization advocacy. These alumni have shared their affection for McNicholas and its community and have been shining examples of high moral and ethical standards and values learned at McNicholas High School.

The Full Stature Special Achievement Award  will be presented to an alumni who exemplifies the ideals and mission of McNicholas High School and the Sisters of St. Joseph. It is presented to an individual in recognition of his or her accomplishments which bring honor to self and school and whose service, leadership, and concern for McNicholas support, strengthen, and exemplify the school's mission. This award is bestowed as a lifetime recognition and will not necessarily be presented annually.

Military Memorial Dedication

Archbishop McNicholas High School would like to thank our Military Memorial Committee for their work on the Military Memorial Dance that took place on Feb. 23.  For ten years, this group of dedicated volunteers have organized this dance, set up, hosted, and cleaned up the next day.  It originated as a way to fund the Military Memorial, the committee continued on so that they could provide scholarships to the school.  In the past ten years, they have raised enough money to build the memorial, maintain the memorial, and provide the school with $80,000 in scholarship money. This was the last time the committee will host the dance, and it was attended by over 320 people. Everyone had a great time.  The committee will still be involved with maintaining the memorial, and planning the activities around Memorial Day, and Veterans Day.  If you are interested in getting involved with any of these activities, please contact Jim Hay.  The members of the committee are: Ken Serger '69, Rick Ahlrich '69, John McHugh '69, John Kindel '69, Jim Hay '77, Denise Kiser Grannen '77, Barb Quehl Boots '78, Gwyn Bush, Gloria Ann Castleman, Sharon & Joe Horn, Anne & Bill Jones.

While the Military Memorial Committee closed this chapter with this last dance, new chapters open! Our next event will be the 10th anniversary of our Memorial Dedication. We are planning a re-dedication ceremony for Friday, April 26, at 10:00 a.m. This will be an outdoor event, open to guests. We are currently lining up featured speakers, and music. Guest parking will be at Guardian Angels and at Mt. Washington Presbyterian Church, as it will be a school day. Watch for more detailed information in the April newsletter.

Development update

As McNicholas starts the last quarter of the academic year, alumni gifts to the Annual Fund have led the way to the great year. We have our goal of $300,000 in sight, but we still need some help to make sure we get there. We need the alumni to help us once again.
If you have already made a gift to this year's Annual Fund, thank you. Your gift has gone to work right away in helping us in many areas of the school. If you have not had a chance to make a gift to the Annual Fund, please do so. You can specify your gift to make an impact in any of the five following areas:
* Most Critical Need
* Tuition Assistance
* Fine and Performing Arts
* Athletics
* Facilities
You can make a gift to the Annual Fund in multiple ways. Visit  www.mcnhs.org, select the "Support McNick" tab and you will see the steps to make a donation. If you would like to make your gift with a check, just make the check payable to McNicholas High School, and specify on the memo line what area you would like to support. Time to start planning reunions for 2019!

New year, new reunions.  If your graduation year ends in a 4 or 9, you are up for a reunion in 2019.  I have sent an email to the planning committees last week. Some reunions are already starting to take shape. The Class of '69 has selected September 27 and 28 to celebrate its 50th reunion. As we move closer to summer, please check our website to see as new reunion dates are announced.
