Annual TSIC Shopping Day:
On Saturday, July 21st, students and families from the Take Stock in Children program were able to shop in the Teaching Tools Store for free school supplies in preparation for the school year. Nearly 200 TSIC students participated in the event. Students loaded up on school staples like pencils, notebooks, binders, and more! We'd like to say a big thank you to all the amazing volunteers who assisted us for the day!

August Mentor of the Month
1. How did you become involved with mentoring through the Hillsborough Education Foundation?
One of my amazing co-workers at Hillsborough County Public Schools, and mentor, was a HEF Mentor and I decided to attend a training and get involved.
2. What has been the most rewarding part of mentoring?
It has been rewarding to serve and build relationships with students in the community in which I live. I have learned so much from my mentee and how important it is to always "come back" and be apart of the greatness that is going on in my community.
3. What do you believe is the key to being a quality mentor?
You have to be a great listener and be empathetic. Our students are struggling and sometimes they don't need "all the answers", they just need to know someone is listening to them and can empathize with their situation. We as mentors are not her to "fix" anything....we are here to be the example that anything is possible with support.
4. When you are not working with students, how do you prefer to spend your free time?
I love to spend time with my 2 children Julian, 9 and my daughter Sofia 5, and my husband Matthew. Our little family loves to go to the beach and be by the pool! We love the water.
5. What do you hope your mentee will learn from you?
I hope that she will learn that even though the road may be tough, with perseverance and dedication, all of her dreams and goals are attainable. I also hope that she learns to come back and serve her community the way I did. It's the biggest reward!

Skills For Life Report
August: Advice for the Academic Year
The month of August signifies the beginning of the school year once again. As we welcome the new academic year, we also welcome any new challenges that this school year may bring us. It's important to set the tone for the school year with your mentee by helping them identify any potential obstacles in the coming year as well as goals they'd like to accomplish.
Of course, scholastic achievement is inherently important to your student's academic advancement. However, it is also important that your student learns how to communicate and cooperate with others in their environment. If your student is starting at a new middle or high school, let them know that they are going to encounter other students that are different from themselves. Your student may encounter adversity with their peers or instructors, but this is where soft skills come in handy. Encourage your student to use their soft skills, such as communication and team work, to enhance their success in this coming school year.
The
Skills for Life
Toolkit is dedicated to the development and improvement of soft skills. The Toolkit includes information and activities on valuable soft skills, such as communication, positive attitude, adaptability, teamwork, and critical thinking.
