How do we get kids to think long-term? The idea of deferred gratification is lost on the generation of the 24 hour news cycle, the instantaneousness of Instagram, the constant checking of follow/unfollow on Twitter, the idea that SnapChat disappears in 24 hours.
So, how do we establish benchmarks along the way that aren't too far in the distance that students still see them, but aren't close enough that they are too easy to attain? This comes back to grit, intellectual stamina, and personal discipline. In college, I majored in procrastination. And times haven't changed for our young folks. In fact, it's probably gotten worse with this generation. And it's not their fault. It's environmental.
The belief, "if it's not happening right now, it doesn't require my attention," is battle educators and parents face daily.
I say all of this because I have met with some juniors and seniors who are at risk for
not graduating. We do our best to establish timelines, reward progress, check in frequently. But we can't get to all of our students as often as we want to.
Spring sports and Prom will be here before you know it. Please know that a cumulative GPA of 2.0 (unweighted) is one of our requirements. This WILL lock in at the end of the 2nd nine weeks which started this past Tuesday and ends at Winter Break. Time to start building in time to frequently check in with your student for long-term gratification. Thank you!

GETTING STUDENTS TO THINK LONG-TERM
The Law of Opposite Consequences
This law of success says that "a short-term action aimed at immediate gratification can lead to opposite consequences from those at which it was aimed."
For example, someone might make an investment of time, money , or emotion with the desire and intent to be better off and happier as a result. But because they acted without carefully thinking or doing their homework, the consequences of their behavior turned out to be far worse than if they had done nothing at all. Every person has had this experience, and usually more than once.
The lesson? Perhaps the most important word in long-term thinking is sacrifice. Superior people have the ability to make sacrifices in the short-term, both large and small, as to assure greater results and rewards in the long-term.
A success is one who decided to succeed -
and worked.
A failure is one who decided to succeed -
and wished.
A decided failure is one who failed to decide -
and waited.
