Australia
Kath Owen and Michael Owen at the Olive Bus in Clare
An olive green-coloured 1969 British Leyland Panther bus might sound like an unlikely tourist attraction. But when Michael Owen and his two sons found it sitting idle in a paddock in the Clare Valley one Christmas day, they immediately fell in love with it, and his wife Kath knew they had found a cellar door for their Stone Ridge Olive Oil.
A new online survey is being conducted by researchers at Deakin University, aimed at better understanding Australian consumer attitudes and preferences for olive oil. Data being collected includes demographics and information relating to attitudes, preferences, behaviours, purchasing, usage and consumption of olive oil. The survey takes approx 20 mins to complete and you can take part here.

We’ll bring you the results of the research in Olivegrower & Processor.

On Wedneday the International Olive Council and UC Davis Olive Center partnered to present the International Conference on Olive Oil and Prevention of Chronic Disease. International
No manifestation of the disease has been documented in Greece, and the deputy minister of Rural Development said he wants to keep it that way.

Luckily Australia and New Zealand are also to date Xylella-free – and just as determined to ensure our groves stay that way. Get the low-down on the disease, and what you can do to help protect our industry, from our features in the September and December editions of Olivegrower & Processor .

Researchers in Singapore have discovered that a polyphenol-rich curry could aid the fight against type 2 diabetes and other metabolic diseases by improving postprandial glucose homeostasis and increasing glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).

Just imagine the health benefits if the curry was also made with EVOO!

One of the perks of working in the test kitchen is having outside experts visit and share their knowledge. This week David Neuman, the CEO of Gaea, a Greek extra-virgin olive oil company, and a certified professional extra-virgin olive oil taster, stopped by to host a blind olive oil tasting.

More high-profile influencers learning about EVOO is great news for our industry.
“Start with a little oil in the bottom of the skillet,” I recently told my son, while showing him how to cook a dish in our home kitchen. That day I started the process with a little extra-virgin olive oil in the bottom of the pan.

A lovely celebration of olive oil (and friendship) – and who doesn’t love a recipe which uses half a cup of olive oil!
On February 4th, in Minneapolis, the final game of the National Football League will take place. This is a moment that brings together more than 110 million people in front of television screens. Olives from Spain has taken this unique opportunity to launch some new innovative recipes, changing the usual appetizers and hot dogs to include olives.

This is big-time marketing. Let’s hope it spins off into millions more people wanting to eat olives … and then discovering EVOO!

Food companies in Taiwan that violate the law can now be closed immediately, following the introduction of new guidelines by the country’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The new regulations include expired goods, so let’s hope this means Taiwan will benefit via less old, rancid oil in the food chain.
Researchers concluded that olive oil’s higher levels of monounsaturated oleic and palmitoleic acids accounted for its advantages in wound treatment.
