It's Time for Summer

We can feel it in the air. The days are getting longer. The temperature is rising. Graduation announcements arrive in our mailboxes complete with photos of children who grew up all too fast. We mark on our family calendar a wedding in the not too distant future. We plan a visit to the ballpark: the Nationals, the Orioles, the Yankees, or the Red Sox. Friends and neighbors talk about summer vacation plans to faraway places. Indeed, a few of you have told me of your plans to visit the scenic sites of the Pacific Northwest this summer: Mt Rainier, Olympic National Park, and the rugged Oregon coastline. Maybe you’re planning a trip to England or Scotland this summer.

Summer is a time for seeing new things and having new experiences. Summer is also a time for moving. On average, 40 million Americans move each year and it is estimated that 80% of those moves occur between April and September. We migrate during these summer months.

Still, for some, summer may mean staying home: a time to pull out the hoses and sprinklers, a time to cheer at an evening softball game, a time to listen to blue grass music, a time to enjoy long hours of conversation out on the screened porch.

Summer time invites us to enjoy the extended daylight hours. In the church, we recognize summer as a time of restoration and Sabbath. Starting this Sunday, we move to worship at 10 o'clock. It’s time for our two services to come together as one. Call it a summer reunion, if you like.

“For everything there is a season," Ecclesiastes 3:1 reads, "and a time for every matter under heaven…” May God bless you and keep you this summer. May God surprise you and inspire you this summer. And over these summer months may God give you peace, joy, and times of reflection.
Blessings,
Ken

Come to Westminster on Sunday, June 2, at 10 a.m. for a musical in worship: Table for Five…Thousand! followed by a church picnic. This multi-generational musical will be presented in worship with scenery and costumes on Sunday, June 2 at 10 am. At the church picnic, the fellowship team will provide the main course of fried chicken, corn dogs (vegetarian), and baked beans, as well as cold drinks. Feel free to bring side dishes, salads, and desserts to share. A bounce house for young and old will add to the festivities!
Hunger Offering this Sunday

The Hunger Offering will be received in worship on Sunday, May 26. In 2018 your contributions, along with other congregations in our Presbytery, contributed $68,153 to emergency food relief, including emergency food centers; school backpack programs, and county food pantries, as well as support for advocacy groups like Bread for the World and Virginia Hunger Solutions.

Come to the E.A.T. Dinner on May 30

Our final Thursday E.A.T. (Everyone At the Table) meal is on May 30. Join us for fellowship and a simple meal at 5:30 p.m. at Common Grounds. Visit www.westminsterva.org and click on the E.A.T. Dinner banner for links to r.s.v.p. or sign up to provide a portion of one of the dinners.

New Members Dinner on June 22

Everyone who joined Westminster in 2018 or 2019 is invited to a Potluck Dinner on Saturday, June 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the library. This is a great chance for you to get to know those who are new to Westminster. The next day, Sunday, June 23, we’ll celebrate our latest class of new members in worship at 10 a.m.

A Little Summer Music - Calling performers of all ages!

On Thursday, June 27, at 7:30 p.m. you are invited to be part of a special concert at Westminster. We need performers of all ages and abilities to create this unique evening of music for our community. Following the performance in the sanctuary there will be ice cream served in the courtyard. This is a fun opportunity to share your talents and enjoy a time of fellowship. Please contact ALSM host, Dana Patek, patekfamily@me.com if you have questions, and to get your name in the program.
