Civic Association Directors Hear Updates on Development Projects
Directors of the Palm Beach Civic Association received updates on the Charley's Crab, Royal Poinciana Way and the Morton and Barbara Mandel Recreation Center developments at a Dec. 14 luncheon meeting at The Colony.
Chairman and CEO Bob Wright welcomed the 85 people to the luncheon during the Civic Association's 75th anniversary year. Mr. Wright thanked Scripps Research for sponsoring the event.

June 5, 1945 Palm Beach Post: Page Hufty, acting chairman of the newly formed Palm Beach Civic Association executive committee, sent a letter to the Town Council from the Civic Association, saying the organization was opposed to the operation of any gambling establishment in the town and was ready to use "all legal and proper means to prevent such operation."

Port Okays County to Maintain
Coast Guard Facilities
The Port of Palm Beach Commissioners Tuesday voted unanimously in favor of a temporary agreement that would allow Palm Beach County to take over maintenance of the Peanut Island Coast Guard facilities.

So Far, No New Plans for New Year's Eve Fireworks in Palm Beach
Marilyn Mendell is not happy about the Coconuts' recent decision to nix its traditional midnight fireworks display at the Flagler Museum this year. Mendell, who lives in West Palm Beach, says that every New Year's Eve, after seeing a play at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts and having dinner with about 20 friends, she invites them to her apartment at Trump Plaza to look at the light-filled spectacular on her terrace while drinking Champagne.

Shoreline, Underground Project Focus of South End Meeting in Palm Beach

Upcoming shoreline and undergrounding projects are the main issues affecting the South End of Palm Beach, according to Town Council member Lew Crampton. The sand restoration project for Reach 7 and Phipps Ocean Park, which runs from Sloan's Curve south to The Ambassador Hotel on South Ocean Boulevard, is scheduled for 2020.

Palm Beach Stops Short of Banning Ficus that Attracts Whitefly
Palm Beach is poised to restrict the planting of Ficus benjamina, which is a favorite food of the dreaded whitefly. But the Town Council last week stopped short of supporting a total ban. Existing hedges would not be affected by the ordinance, which is expected to go before the council for final approval on Jan. 8.

Red Tide Gone - But Not Its Impact
The latest red tide map from the Florida Fish and Wildlife shows little to no red tide concentrations along the Florida coast, including the Gulf coast. In West Central Florida, the only indications of red tide were in the Bradenton area in the last eight days.

Restrictions on Shark Fishing from Shore Move Forward
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted this week to approve drafted rules that would restrict shore-based shark fishing and ban chumming. If a final vote in February passes, the law will require people to get an annual shore-based shark fishing permit, keep prohibited shark species in the water and release them soon after capture, according to the draft language.

Manatee Deaths Increase, but Estimate Raised for Florida's Manatee Population
It has been a deadly year for manatees, but Florida wildlife officials believe there are more of the threatened marine mammals than they previously thought. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission now says roughly 7,500 to 10,300 manatees swim in state waters, a significant increase from previous estimates of roughly 6,000.

With an unexpected surge in sales-tax and corporate income-tax collections, analysts on Tuesday projected a significant increase in state revenue over two years. If the revenue projections hold, it will ease the financial pressure on incoming Gov. Ron DeSantis, as he prepares his first budget recommendation, and on the Legislature, which must pass a 2019-2020 state budget when it meets in the spring.
