There’s not long to wait now until we know the winners of the 2018 Australian International Olive Awards. The results will be announced at tonight’s Gala Presentation Dinner, being held as part of the National Olive Industry Conference & Exhibition in Wagga Wagga. Who will take home the coveted Best EVOO and Best Table Olive in Show awards? Best of luck to all the entrants, and congratulations in advance to all the winning producers.

We’ll bring you a snapshot of the results in next week’s Friday Olive Extracts, and take a good look at the winners and medal count in the December edition of Olivegrower & Processor.

FREE Webinar - Current Evidence and Lifestyle Medicine Approach
The Olive Wellness Institute is running a FREE Webinar - A Focus on the Most Current Evidence and a Lifestyle Medicine Approach – and Friday Olive Extract readers are invited to attend.
Presented by two leading Australian Dietitians, Professor Catherine Itsiopoulos and Dr Flavia Fayet Moore, the session will detail the basis of the Lifestyle Medicine Approach, and provide a summary of the most current Systematic Literature Reviews relating to EVOO and health. The relationship between EVOO and heart health will be reviewed, together with an overarching summary of the evidence to support a Mediterranean diet, with EVOO as the principle dietary fat.

Biological Farming Conference and Expo
The Australian Biological Farming Conference and Expo - Gold Coast, 9-12 November will feature Jeff Moyer, author of Organic No-Till Farming, whose expertise includes biological farming production systems with a focus on weed management, cover crops, crop rotations and more. Also speaking will be Michael Phillips, author of The Holistic Orchard and Mycorrhizal Planet. The event is convened by SoilCare Inc with support from Environmental Analysis Lab, Southern Cross University, NASAA, Bayer CropScience, AusQual and Organic Crop Protectants. More information here.

Bookings are now open for the Queensland IPDM Field Day, the third in the national program as part of the olive levy-funded project: An integrated pest and disease management extension program for the olive industry (OL17001). Details are:

Where: Perseverance Hall, Perseverance and Rash Valley Olives, Palm Tree, Qld. 
The field days are being organized by AOA in conjunction with Western Sydney University to explore appropriate IPDM extension services focused particularly on black scale, olive lace bug and anthracnose. Events will also be held in November in Victoria and South Australia, followed by Tasmania in December and WA events in February. Piers Fuller/Stuff: New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Oil Awards head judge Esteban Santipolio with Best in Show winners Kate and Mark Bunny of Loopline olive grove in Masterton.
An olive grove in Masterton proves there must be something in the water, and the soil, and the weather, for them to be producing such award winning extra virgin oils. Loopline Olives of Wairarapa took out the 2018 Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show at The New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive Awards on Saturday night.

Wairarapa scooped the pool at Saturday’s nights awards, with Juno Olives also doubling up with Best in Boutique and Reserve Best in Boutique, and The Olive Press matching with Best Flavoured Oil and Best Processor. Congratulations to all 2018 medal and trophy winners! We’ll bring you all the results and more on the winners in the December edition of Olivegrower & Processor.
EPA ramps up chemical reassessments program
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is making changes to the way some chemicals are managed in New Zealand. It is ramping up its reassessments program and taking action on some chemicals to ensure risks to people and the environment continue to be managed effectively. 
The EPA manages the regulation, approval and reassessment of chemicals classed as hazardous substances under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act. Working with international counterparts it has identified a priority chemicals list of around 40 chemicals that require review and scrutiny. Find out more and view the list here.

The FSSAI's continuous push for mandatory fortification of staple foods has been criticised by several edible oil firms, which claim it may be too difficult to implement in their specific industry. 

An interesting contemplation in regard to EVOO, given that ANY added ingredient means it’s not EVOO.
The Commission is targeting the most damaging unfair trade practices to grant farmers and small and medium sized businesses greater certainty and less need to manage risks over which they have little or no control.

Recently there has been a huge surge in international publications hailing the multiple positive health effects of olive oil. But not just any olive oil. It must contain a large number of phenolic compounds.
All these latest developments in the field mean that Yale University has suddenly become very interested in a Cyprus farm.
Virgin olive oil prices are expected to rocket as crops have been hit by poor weather and devastating wildfires. Italian and Greek farmers are struggling this year, with their harvest down by nearly 60% in some areas, while a smaller crop from Tunisia means worldwide production is set to dip 10%.
