Scientology Center work under way

After years of delay, work has finally begun on exterior restoration of the Artcraft Building at 650 S. Clark. The century-old building is believed to have been designed by architect Howard Van Doren Shaw, and features notable terra cotta ornament overlooking Clark St. and handsome millwork inside.

The Church of Scientology acquired the building a decade ago, intending to make it their primary Chicago site. Recent fundraising efforts have allowed them to begin $1.7 million in exterior work.

Alta project at Harrison & Wells

The May Zoning Board of Appeals agenda contains requests for minor variations related to two new 14-story buildings at the corner of Harrison & Wells. Each building will contain 173 units, and foundation building permits have already been issued. Fifty years ago, the site was home to Grand Central Station, the first of Chicago's great train stations to close, in 1969, and be demolished, in 1971.

IN BRIEF

  • 3rd Ward Office welcomes a new staff member, Nathaniel Winston.
  • The 1st Police District is reviving eight new officers, which reinforces the 39 new officers assigned to the district over the past six months.
