March 7 Board Highlights
SMUHSD's Board of Trustees invites you to its Thursday, March 7, 2019 regular meeting. 

The meeting highlights include presentations on the following topics of community interest:
  • Recognition of LGBTQ+ Student Leaders
  • Recognition of Capuchino High International Baccalaureate Scholars  
  • LCAP Mid-Year Update
The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the San Mateo Adult School, 789 E. Poplar Avenue, San Mateo.

Awards and Achievements
Aragon Girls Basketball Team Wins CCS


Congratulations to the Aragon Girls Basketball Team - they recently won the CCS Division II Championship beating out Lynbrook High School. 

The Lady Dons qualified for  the Northern California CIF Division III Tournament and beat #8 seed Eureka High School in the first round. They ended their season with a second round loss to El Dorado's Union Mine High School.

Mills High School FCCLA Students Bring Home Awards

Mills High School FCCLA students Family, Career and Community Leaders of America  (FCCLA) is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization for young men and women in Family and Consumer Sciences education in public and private school through grade 12.

In early February, fifteen Mills FCCLA members Chapter attended the Spring Meeting and Region qualifying competitions held in Vacaville.

Mills students placed as follows: 

Entrepreneurship: Carrie Ho and Erin Lum, 1st Place

Event Planning: Alyssa Tat and Amber Chan, 1st Place

Interior Design: Kailah Pintor and Rachel Su, 1st Place

Salad Preparation: Rebecca Reinhardt-Mullins, 2nd Place

Additionally Carrie Ho was elected to a Regional Officer Position for 2019-20. Currently serving as 2018-19 Regional Officers are Jocelyn Quach and Marina Zoe Wong. Calla Yang is currently serving on State Officer Team.

Student Artwork on Display at Society of West Coast Artists Gallery until March 8

Join the Society of West Coast Artists at their gallery in San Bruno to see a student art exhibit running until March 8. 

The exhibit features artwork from Capuchino, Mills and Burlingame High Schools. 

The gallery is open 12 - 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Capuchino High School Focuses on Mindfulness 

A recent study shows how mindfulness education in the classroom can reduce students' sense of stress and lengthen attention spans. Read more about the study in the KQED Mindshift article, How Making Time for Mindfulness Helps Students.

Did you know....

Capuchino High School has been piloting its Mindfulness Space since the start of the school year. The purpose of this space is for students to be able to take a 10-15 minute break to ground themselves with mindfulness techniques, so they can return to class in a better mental space for learning. Participation in the Mindfulness Space can be initiated by either student request or teacher referral.

Silicon Valley Princess Project Offers Free Prom Dresses to Students in Need

Help us spread the word about The Princess Project Silicon Valley's 2019 Prom Dress Giveaway! 

Students are invited to book an appointment to shop for a free prom dress on the following dates: 
March 9,10,13, 16, 17 and 19.

The giveaway is located at The Oaks Shopping Center,  21271 Stevens Creek Blvd. in Cupertino.
 
Students can  book appointments online on the Princess Project Silicon Valley website. 
Save the Date: Documentary Screening of "Like" is this Wednesday, March 6

The GATE Parents Group and the Hillsdale High School PTSO are sponsoring a district-wide parent education premier screening of LIKE, the new documentary film from IndieFlix.

The screening will be on Wednesday, March 6 at Hillsdale High School's Auditorium from 7-8:30 p.m. with a guided discussion to follow.

"LIKE" explores the impact of social media and technology on the brain. The film's goal is to inspire people of all ages, especially kids, to self-regulate.

"With themes of communication, teamwork, and self-control, this film has the potential to spark timely, interesting conversations and positive change for viewers, both adults and kids." - Common Sense Media

Gate Parent Group Upcoming SAT Prep Class 

Registration ends March 9 for a GATE Parents Group sponsored SAT Prep Class.  This class targets the May 4 and June 1 SATs.

The prep classes will be held at San Mateo High School on Saturdays 3/16, 3/23, 3/30, 4/13 and 4/27 (no classes on 4/6 and 4/20). Both morning and afternoon sessions are being offered.

San Mateo High School Student Art Exhibit Opening Reception is March 14

Community members are invited to attend the Thursday, March 14 opening reception celebrating San Mateo High School students who have artwork on display in the SMHS Art Gallery. 

The art will be on display until April 19.

Vaping, What YOU Need to Know
Save the Date: Parent/Guardian Education Event is Thursday, April 11


Join us for an educational, evidence-based presentation with a focus on young people. Learn from representatives from the Youth Leadership Institute and the County of San Mateo Health System.

The presentation will cover:
  • What is vaping?
  • What do the products look like?
  • What are the health impacts of this trend?
  • Information about marijuana and vaping!
  • What parents can do!

Free Teen Heart Screening Event for SMUHSD Students is April 14
Registration opens March 6

This FREE teen heart screening event run by volunteers, sponsored in part by the district, is open to ALL students in the San Mateo Union High School District. It will be held at San Mateo High School and will take place on Sunday, April 14, 2019.

Each student who chooses to participate will receive a FREE 60-90 minute heart screening, which includes a health history questionnaire review, EKG test, and an echocardiogram. 
Undiagnosed heart defects in youth can lead to sudden cardiac arrest and death. These tests would normally cost between $1,000 - $3,000.

Registration for this event will open March 6.

2019 Miracle League Adaptive Baseball League Starts March 17 - Volunteers and Participants Needed

The  Miracle League of SF Peninsula is an organization that brings together children and adults with physical, learning or developmental disabilities to play the amazing game of baseball.
Individuals with special needs have the opportunity to play on teams organized according to age and ability in a safe and inclusive environment.

The spring league, played in Redwood City, will run from March 17 - May 19.

Student Film Festival is Tuesday, March 19 in Burlingame

The Citizen's Environmental Council (CEC) and the Burlingame Environmental Club (BEC) have partnered to create the second annual environmental Film Festival in Burlingame. This Festival is for all  4th to 12th grade students who live or attend school in San Mateo County.

Deadline for submissions is Wednesday, March 6.

The Film Fest 2019 will take place Tuesday, March 19 from 6-8 p.m. at Burlingame High School.

Disability Rights Panel Discussion is Wednesday, March 20

How are disabled Americans being denied civil rights despite the existence of legislation like the Americans with Disabilities Act? What are activists and community organizations doing to change this?

Join members of the community for an inter-generational, multiracial panel of disability experts discussing disability justice organizing today.

Panelists include:
  • Stacey Milbern, Accommodations Management Consultant, Wells Fargo
  • Catherine Kudlick, PhD., Director, Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability
  • Ryan Easterly, Executive Director, WITH Foundation
  • Laura Millar, Sexual Education Coach, Educator and Community Organizer
     
This panel discussion will take place Wednesday, March 20 at 7 p.m. at the Foster City Library at 1000 E Hillsdale Blvd.
3rd Annual Event to Raise Awareness of the Importance of Mental Health is May 11

Stride for Awareness (SFA) and the San Mateo Police Activities League (SMPAL) are pleased to announce their 3rd Annual 5k Run/Walk and Resource Fair on Saturday, May 11 at Coyote Point. 

With the goal of creating  a safe society while promoting the physical, social and mental well-being of our youth, SMPAL and SFA brings you this 5k Run/Walk to promote the importance of Student Health and Mental Wellness; Healthy Mind, Body and Community.
