JULY 2018 E-NEWSLETTER
A Message From Our President

Happy July - I hope you are all enjoying the summer with your family and friends! We will hold our second Family Beach Day of the season this month on July 14th at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, and we would love to have you join us! While our support groups are on hiatus for the summer months, we will still be holding our monthly Family Pizza and Pool Party as well as our monthly Family Gymnastics Night, so feel free to bring your family for some inclusive fun!

There are several exciting special events happening this month. Knott's Berry Farm will be holding Autism Awareness Week from July 16th through the 22nd - see the link below for discounted tickets and then go to the park for special sensory friendly performances tailored to our population! There will also be TWO different sensory friendly theater performances this month: Mr. Poppers Penguins at the Casa del Prado Theatre in Balboa Park, and Dr. Seuss' The Lorax at the Old Globe Theatre. See the links below for more information and to purchase tickets to these events.

Finally, be sure to save the date for our 2nd Annual Lights! Camera! Autism! Film and Art Event on September 15th. Featuring an art reception with local autistic artists and autistic musicians as well as films both created by and about people with autism, you won't want to miss this chance to celebrate the many talented people in our community!

Thanks so much,
Amy  Munera

A MASTERPIECE WEEKEND!

On Saturday June 9th, we had an absolutely magnificent time at the
Mainly Mozart Genius Weekend Showcase!
Participants enjoyed a weekend full of culture, education, and incredible music from talented individuals in the Autism community. Julia came all the way from Sesame Street to greet our guests and help put on a massive sensory friendly concert experience with singing, dancing, and so much fun! Thanks again to Mainly Mozart for such a beautiful weekend!

Sunday June 10th was a wonderful morning to spend with the Mission Valley Library for their quarterly Sensory-Friendly Family Time program! Take a look at all the fun we had with the San Diego Guild of Puppetry as guests were taken on an interactive storytelling experience, learned how puppets can be made from everyday items, played music together, and visited a very diverse puppet petting zoo!

Stay tuned for information for the next program, sometime in the next few weeks!
UPCOMING EVENTS FOR JULY
"Ridiculously good! Catchy songs, impressive sets, wickedly clever direction-a show you do not need to be a kid to love!" -Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Direct from London's West End comes the critically acclaimed and Olivier Award-nominated musical event of the summer. Silky soft Truffula trees provide the perfect ingredient for a nifty new garment. But when demand skyrockets, who will speak for all the trees in the Truffula forest? Enter the Lorax. Dr. Seuss's The Lorax has been enchanting adults and children alike for generations, and this summer his irresistible, big-hearted, mustachioed hero will be brought to inventive life in what critics call a "mad, uproarious delight" (The Independent). Audiences of all ages will be thrilled by the brilliant, eye-popping colors, infectious music, and beloved story that the Financial Times called "joyous and all-too-timely."

Space is limited, get your tickets now!

For discount tickets to our sensory-friendly performance starting at just $20-$50,  please call the Ticket Office at (619) 234-5623 and use code word "Friendly"
(Ticket Office hours are Tuesday - Sunday from noon-7pm)

What is a Sensory-Friendly Performance?
In order to make the experience safer and more enjoyable for theatregoers with autism and other sensitivity issues, slight adjustments are made to the production including:
  • Fewer loud noises and flashing lights that may be challenging for some audience members;
  • A quiet area in the lobby of the theatre for children who need to leave their seat during the show;
  • On-site volunteer specialists will be on hand to assist families as they arrive at the Old Globe Theatre and throughout the performance.
Enjoy the show!
