8-Session Course

Experience Level: Open to all who are curious.
No prior experience in sound production or recording required.
This online course will teach you how to make a podcast piece. You will learn tangible skills to help you reach this objective - from recording, interviewing, storyboarding and editing to putting together a finished podcast piece of 3-5 minutes in length. The long-term goal of the course is to deepen your interest in and broaden your perspective on what storytelling can be, and to encourage you to explore the podcasting medium in whatever way most interests you. Sound, like photography, is a medium constrained to one of the human senses. But also like photography, its constraints can be used to create an experience for the listener that transcends hearing or sight. We will discuss the act of listening, explore multiple genres within podcasting, and collaborate on assignments. This course invites you to connect with sound and to wonder at how making podcasts might inform other work that you do.
Gabriel Ellison-Scowcroft is a radio producer and photojournalist from Quebec, Canada. After attending journalism school and working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation for two years, Gabriel moved to the US to pursue a freelance journalism career. He has worked in radio news production, on multimedia investigative journalism projects and as a freelance producer and editor of podcasts. Gabriel is also a photographer whose work has been published internationally.
He is currently based out of San Diego, California.

on the
History of Photography
, taught by
The course will run from 6:30-8:00 Eastern Standard Time
on Monday evenings from March 4 - May 20, 2019.
This course surveys the history and development of photography from the 1830s into the twenty-first century, examining new technologies and styles such as documentary, portrait, and landscape photography. The course unfolds chronologically and will consider the relationships between photography and other artistic media at every juncture.
Rachel Boillot is a photographer, filmmaker, and educator based in Nashville, TN. She holds a BA in Sociology from Tufts University, a BFA in Photography from Tufts University/the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, and an MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts from Duke University. Her work has been funded by the Annenberg Foundation (Los Angeles, CA), the Riverview Foundation (Chattanooga, TN), the Tennessee Arts Commission (Nashville, TN), and the National Endowment for the Arts (Washington, D.C.). She was the recipient of the 2018 PhotoNOLA Review Award. Her monograph "Moon Shine: Photographs of the Cumberland Plateau" will be published by Daylight Books in April 2019. Her documentary film "In That Valley of Gold" will also be released at that time. Boillot currently teaches the History of Photography at
Belmont University. She recently joined the team at the Kentucky Documentary Photography Project.

What is "street photography," what makes for a compelling "street" image, and how can we begin to define our own look and approach working in the street? This course begins seeking to answer these questions by examining historical images, the photographers who made them, and the intellectual, cultural, and technical influences that affected the image-makers. These questions will continue to guide our investigation in the classroom and as we explore the streets in Winchester, Boston, and surrounding areas. Assignments are designed to stretch your vision, help you to design quickly within the frame, and push you beyond your comfort zone.
Discussion, open inquiry, and thoughtful critique are essential tools to growth in this course.

In Another Way of Looking at Love, the landscape is explored as a metaphor for our yearning to be connected, while considering the personal, societal, and environmental consequences of disconnection. From 2015-2018, Janelle Lynch (born 1969) used the 8×10 camera to create natural still lives. Her process included placing the camera in unique vantage points in order to focus on details that visually create geometric formations of closure. The connective point, or nucleus, designed by the union became the artist's plane of focus. The nebulous area within the forms represents space for new realities or possibilities to be imagined. The work is informed by Lynch's immersion in perceptual drawing and painting, an important element to her photographic practice that has allowed for a deeper inquiry into the nature of seeing. The series' title derives from a quote by the philosopher Alain de Botton, who supports Dr. Amy Banks' neuroscientific research and Relational-Cultural Theory. Dr. Banks' theory posits that humans are biologically hardwired to connect and that our personal and cultural well-being depends on our connection with others and with nature. This three-year project reflects on the notion of a natural ideal, and the interconnectedness of all life forms.

In art school, critiques are a frequent and important part of growth. But after school, artists often create in isolated environments and yearn for feedback on new work. The Griffin's critical conversations are safe, honest, and constructive opportunities to share work-in-progress with other photographers.
Bring your work in process to share with facilitator Fran Forman and other attendees, your questions and enough photographs to provide information for discussion with the group. The number of photographs you bring will vary depending on where you are with your project.
Some at the beginning of a new project may have only 5 photographs, but please bring no more than 10. This is not a traditional one-on-one portfolio review. Come prepared to state how you would like Fran and the group to direct their focus.

In Africa, efforts to protect endangered animals frequently have negatively impacted people living traditional lifestyles in those areas. The Batwa Pygmies resided for millennia in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest of southwestern Uganda, along with Mountain Gorillas. In 1992, the government evicted them; the forest had been designated a World Heritage Site and national park, to protect highly endangered mountain gorillas, and gorilla ecotourism. While Mountain Gorillas have benefited from protection from poaching and forest destruction, since eviction the Ugandan government has not provided the Batwa reparation, jobs, housing assistance, or income from ecotourism. Thus, they suffered from high childhood mortality in the years after they left the forest, and although their situation has improved somewhat since then, they still are "ultra-poor," living on less than $0.80 per day. One place in which the Batwa now live is Buhoma, a village at the park entrance. When I first met them in 2006, they were said to be happy with their new lives, but this was belied by their demeanor and living circumstances. I returned to Buhoma in December 2017 to interview and photograph them, and to trek to see the gorillas again, as well. Over two days the Batwa told me ancient stories, described and demonstrated their former forest life, and discussed their current status.

Bio
Before devoting himself fully to photography, Tony was an academic veterinary surgeon and immunologist. He has been on the faculties of the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the Yale School of Medicine and, most recently, the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. There, he served as Professor and Chair of the Surgery Department and as an Associate Dean until retiring. He resides in Boston, MA and Peru, VT.
As long as Tony can remember he has been involved in the visual arts. This started with drawing and has included clay sculpture, oil painting and film photography. Since 2003 his artistic passion has been photography, and since retirement from academia, he has focused on it exclusively, using digital capture and producing archival pigment prints.

John Reuter was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1953. Raised in California until high school, he moved to New York and attended college in upstate New York at SUNY Geneseo. It was there that he began to study photography and art. He studied with photographer Michael Teres and painter and art historian Rosemary Teres. Together they inspired his early work, which took advantage of photographic process to transform the camera's reality into a more "mythic" reality. Reuter continued this work in graduate school at the University of Iowa in the late seventies. It was here that he began his SX-70 collages, which still inform his work today...

He makes photographs and videos, draws and paints, and yet he is perhaps most well-known as the individual behind the hands-on magic of the giant Polaroid 20x24 camera; a person who sets aside his own aesthetic and artistic practice in order to help his fellow artists realize on film what each envisions in his or her imagination. His creativity, technical abilities and generous spirit are gifts that he shares to insure their success."

The towers were originally built in 1804-1805 to defend
against a Napoleonic invasion by sea. Napoleon never
came.... and the towers did in fact deter what seemed to be the inevitable. The Martello Towers were built closely together so as to function as signal towers. When standing at one
you will surely see at least one other. In Dublin you
will see one to the left and one to the right. There are more
in other countries too, but Ireland is the filter through
which I chose to document the towers. -TO

I am a self-described wallflower, rooted in the private mysteries of home and family. My images are my story, as told by a mostly reliable narrator. The subjects I photograph are gathered from my immediate surroundings: my children, our beloved dog, household artifacts, and the natural world outside our door. Individually, each image is a story in itself. Taken as a whole, this work is a fable of motherhood, love, and the inevitability of loss. - JH
