Supporters of Tweed runway expansion bill turn out for public hearing
The Tweed Airport runway expansion bill took center stage at the Capitol complex Monday as the transportation committee heard stakeholders public testimony.
Gov. Lamont voiced his support for the expansion of the runway at Tweed in his budget address. Overall, it's part of a push to modernize Connecticut's transportation infrastructure on the roads, the rails and in the air.
"We really need to kick-start the economy," said Anthony Fartaria of The Omni Hotel at Yale-New Haven. One proposal to do it is to expand the runway at Tweed Airport to accommodate commercial flights. Kevin Dillon is the Executive Director of the Connecticut Airport Authority. "I think any airport that really wants to get into commercial service has to have a 6,000 foot runway."

Branford creates $1M fund to counter sea level rise; likely 1st in state
Branford, a leader in the push throughout coastal Connecticut to ramp-up coastal resilience efforts to counter the effects of future sea level rise, has created a new tool: a $1 million fund to invest, grow and help finance future efforts.
The "Coastal Resiliency Fund" will grow over time as it earns interest and the town makes additional contributions, according to members of the Representative Town Meeting, which recently unanimously approved it.
But what thus far is a singular effort by one shoreline community to cope with the effects of climate change - at a time when many efforts statewide are in the planning stage - could soon be extended to communities from Greenwich to Bridgeport to New Haven to Stonington.

Yale lobbies for better CT transportation
As concerns amount regarding Connecticut transportation infrastructure, University President Peter Salovey and other Yale administrators have been lobbying state government officials for better transportation to and from New Haven.
In an email to the News, Salovey said that faster train service to the Elm City and more flights from Tweed New Haven Airport would increase jobs, expand the tax base and stimulate the local economy. Prior to the November election, he encouraged gubernatorial candidates to support better transportation to the city and, with presidents of other Connecticut universities, hosted Gov. Ned Lamont SOM '80 for a meeting after he had been elected, Salovey said. He added that the University "urged the state" to repeal the statute that caps the length of Tweed's runway at 5,600 feet, which is too short for most modern airlines. He called the restriction "the single most important obstacle to better air service from Tweed."

Wallingford manufacturer gets approval for expansion
Rowland Technologies Inc., which manufactures plastic film and sheet products, is planning a large expansion of its Barnes Road facility in Wallingford.
The Planning & Zoning Commission recently approved the company's site plan to add 33,737 square feet to its existing manufacturing, warehouse and office building, which is now about 70,000 square feet.
The current structure houses administrative offices, a warehouse and manufacturing space.
Tony Mortali, project manager with Rowland, said the new square footage will be used primarily for more office and warehouse space. Read More

YNHH Plans New Construction On St. Raphael Campus
Yale New Haven Hospital is adding to its Saint Raphael campus in a move expected to boost city revenues in the coming fiscal year.
Mayor Toni Harp confirmed Monday that a line in her proposed new city budget refers to a big-ticket project envisioned for the hospital's current footprint in town.
"We're in negotiations with Yale as we speak about a building that they hope to build," Harp said.
Discussions have taken place in recent months about a multi-story medical building on the Chapel-Orchard street blocks on the campus of the former Hospital of St. Raphael in the Dwight/West River neighborhood, including a possible new parking garage.
The discussions have focused on Yale New Haven plans for a combination of demolition and new construction, according to participants. The plans fit into a broader intention of the hospital to upgrade the St. Raphael campus, which it purchased from the former Hospital of St. Raphael in 2012.
