The Cross - A SIGN!

A Note From Pastor Linda

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Dear People of the Cross, Followers of Jesus,

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 6, with worship at Hosanna at 12 noon and 6 PM. Join us- and invite a friend! During the Season of Lent, we will pause at the cross and listen to Jesus' seven words before his death. You will be invited to make the SIGN of the CROSS- and take a cross home every Sunday.

Making the SIGN of the CROSS. "Hey, Pastor Linda, I thought this was a "Catholic-thing"!"

Actually, it is a Christian thing. Consider these words from Martin Luther, the reformer of our tradition:
In the morning, when you rise, you shall make the sign of the holy cross...
In the evening, when you go to bed, you shall make the sign of the holy cross...

The SIGN of the CROSS is an ancient Christian practice of making the shape of the cross upon one's self, or another person, or object. Here are some of the reasons why we make the SIGN of the CROSS:
  • Tangible way to mark ourselves or others as belonging to Jesus.
  • An act of sanctification, that is, setting apart as holy.
  • The act is a prayer in itself.
  • A marker of belief in the Triune God.
There is nothing superstitious or rote about making the SIGN of the CROSS, unless we choose to make it that way. How do you make the SIGN of the CROSS?
  • Touch your thumb to your pointer and middle finger, fold down ring and pinkie finger toward your palm. The three fingers together symbolize the three Persons of the Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) while the two fingers together symbolize the divine and human natures of Jesus Christ.
  • With your hand in position, trace Christ's cross beginning at your forehead, to heart/center of chest, to left shoulder to right shoulder.
In the East (as in Eastern Orthodox), it is right then left shoulder. Are you doing it WRONG if you do it that way- no. In some traditions, people kiss their hand after making the sign. Some people return their hand to their heart after the second shoulder.

Making the sign of the cross in no manner makes one a superior Christian, more Lutheran, or somehow more confessional than those who choose not to. Such an action is entirely left up to Christian freedom with no coercion. Yet, the SIGN of the CROSS is a powerful and tangible reminder that we are Christ's, as we LIVE, LOVE and SERVE so that all will know Jesus. During the Season of Lent you will be invited to make the SIGN of the CROSS part of your life.

See you in CHURCH- on Ash Wednesday and Sunday!
