PALCUS Welcomes Gloria Sousa to the Board of Directors
PALCUS is pleased to announce that Gloria Sousa (FL) has been elected to the Board of Directors. She is a realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Florida Realty and CEO of KeySolutions Medical Billing, LLC in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
A proud and active Portuguese American living and working on Florida's "Treasure Coast", Gloria is a correspondent for LusoAmericano, immediate past president of the Portuguese-American Cultural Club of Port St. Lucie and a team leader for Team Treasured Chests Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. She is an Executive Producer with Black Triad Entertainment working on a production called "Lawless" that will bring Portuguese talent into the series. She is also a Captain for the PALCUS Make Portuguese Count™ in the 2020 Census Campaign working with organizations along the Treasure Coast.
With a Portuguese population of almost 70,000, Florida will be well represented by Gloria's energy and vision. We look forward to working with her as she engages with Florida's PALCUS members and the community at large.

PALCUS Vice-Chair Katherine Soares Selected by ACYPL for Timor-Leste Delegation in April
Vice-Chair Katherine Soares has been selected by the ACYPL (American Council of Young Political Leaders) to represent PALCUS in its delegation to visit Timor-Leste (East Timor) in April. Currently a Public Information Officer for the County of Union in New Jersey, Katherine has been a Marketing and Public Relations professional for nearly a decade. Her career achievements include having directed marketing efforts in the private sector with global 360 degree placement in Europe and Asia.
As PALCUS Vice-Chair, Katherine has overseen marketing and social media strategy as well as press outreach and coverage for PALCUS events and announcements.
"I am honored to have been selected by ACYPL and look forward to learning about the culture and government of Timor-Leste. I'm particularly interested in learning what resources and organizations are available to help be the audible voice of the Timor-Leste people within government."
This honor is not only in recognition of Katherine's leadership role at PALCUS but also of PALCUS' part in supporting the struggles of Timor-Leste throughout the years.
PALCUS hosted Nobel Peace Prize Winner Dr. José Ramos Horta for a Lusitanian Forum in 1997 in support of his efforts to gain the attention of the Clinton administration which ultimately forced UN action to end the atrocities taking place in Timor-Leste at the hands of Indonesia.
Fmr. President and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão was named an Honorary PALCUS Member in 2017 at its Annual Leadership Awards Gala in Yonkers, NY where he served as Keynote Speaker. PALCUS was honored to be present at the signing of the Maritime Boundary Treaty between Australia and Timor-Leste at the United Nations on March 6, 2018. We are proud that Katherine has been selected to learn more about Timor-Leste as part of this select delegation and to participate in maintaining this historic relationship with Timor-Leste.
About ACYPL Delegations:
ACYPL programs are designed for bipartisan groups of 7 emerging leaders under the age of 40 to experience another country's political environment for 8-14 days. Participants visit the capital and 1-2 other cities to meet with government officials, political parties, elected leaders, policy experts, and members of the business community.
Every year, with support from the United States Department of State, international partner organizations, and a wide range of corporations, foundations, and individ
uals, ACYPL conducts a variety of exchanges for rising political leaders from across the United States and around the world. ACYPL has a network of over 8,500 alumni in 128 countries and territories, and many of these individuals have risen to positions of national and international prominence, including: 1 sitting Prime Minister, 1 Cabinet Secretary, 5 Governors, 8 U.S. Senators, and 30 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

What a great turnout for the PALCUS Professional Mixer at the Machado Law Group in Springfield, NJ on February 28, 2019! Organized by NJ PALCUS Directors Cynthia Marques Russo and Anabela Da Cruz-Melo, guests networked, enjoyed wine and snacks and learned about the Make Portuguese Count™ Campaign in the 2020 Census.

PALCUS National Scholarship Applications

PALCUS is pleased to announce that the 2019 application cycle for the PALCUS National Scholarships is now open.
The program was established by the Rosa Family in 2012 and is maintained by donations by Marc F. Rosa with matching funds from Merrill Lynch and other donors. This year the Alexandre António DaCosta Simões Memorial Scholarship will be added.
To be eligible, students must be a

O Prémio Literário " Imprensa Nacional/Ferreira de Castro ", é o resultado do estabelecimento do Protocolo de Cooperação entre o Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros e a Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda, com o objetivo de selecionar, alternadamente, trabalhos inéditos de grande qualidade dos domínios da ficção, poesia e ensaio. Tem ainda por finalidade preservar, valorizar e difundir a criação literária em língua portuguesa, desenvolvida por portugueses e lusodescendentes residentes no estrangeiro, bem como identificar, realçar e homenagear o contributo e a herança cultural dos portugueses da Diáspora, razão pela qual o nome escolhido para este prémio seja do escritor e emigrante, Ferreira de Castro. 33nd Portuguese Language Summer Course
The Department of Portuguese of the University of Macau is welcoming applications for its 33nd Portuguese Language Summer Course. This year our program will offer courses in five different levels (beginner, basic, intermediate, advanced and superior) .
The Summer Course of Portuguese Language and Culture gives participants from different countries an opportunity to improve their skills in Portuguese or to start learning the language.
Period: July 15 to August 02, 2019

PALCUS Mission
In order to create a singular voice to advocate for the Portuguese-American and Luso-American communities at large, the Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States Inc. (PALCUS) was founded in 1991 as a non-partisan, non-profit, organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
The PALCUS mission is to address domestic and international concerns of the Portuguese-American Community.
The Council conducts an expanding program of educational and public affairs activities on issues of interest to the Portuguese-American community and of salience to the Luso-American Relationship.
PALCUS is committed to serving the community through increasingly active government relations efforts, the promotion of a greater awareness of ethnic accomplishments and encouraging stronger ties between Portugal and the United States. In this role PALCUS advances the community professionally, politically and culturally while working to ensure that issues directly affecting our community are addressed through our network of government and community leaders.
PALCUS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under the IRS tax code and incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia. Donations are tax deductible to extent allowed by law and will be acknowledged.
