Alumna Valerie Rainford '82 awards scholarships

In August 2018 Valerie Irick Rainford, a proud 1982 alumna of St. Catharine Academy, approached SCA President Sr. Patricia Wolf with an idea for a writing competition for juniors and seniors to offset tuition.  She envisioned the competition would be based on her memoir, global best-selling book, Until the Brighter Tomorrow, One Woman's Courageous Climb from the Projects to the Podium. Students were asked to submit a minimum 1,000 word essay describing their own experiences of resilience and courage. "I have a story to tell," said Rainford, "and I want to help others tell their story. At SCA I saw that there was life beyond the projects. I want to inspire people to get beyond their circumstances."

Elizbeth Diaz-Pilier '20 Paints Patriotic Mural

Elizbeth Diaz-Pilier '20 painted the patriotic eagle mural in her history classroom. When her teacher,  Kristen Muschio, approached the class with the idea Elizbeth jumped at the opportunity-- she had worked on a mural in elementary school and also participated in a Vans "Off the Wall" contest as a freshman.

Saying history is one of her favorite classes, Elizbeth said she is also involved in a cadet program, the Washington Greys Military Cadets, which made this project very personal.

" When I finished the eagle I felt very jubilant because for me personally it's more than just an eagle. The eagle contains the American flag which represents the United States, a place of diversity and freedom," Elizbeth explained. "The eagle itself represents courage and honor and that's when I think of the military and my love for it. I enjoyed every moment in making the mural and the many smiles that came when I finished it."
