President's Update
Even though it feels like a "Toast to the Future"
Gala is far from now, it is a little over 2 months away!  2.5 months to go!!! I hope you are saving Friday, May 17th!

I know these are the most important months of planning, and the Gala Committee has been working so hard all year long to bring this together. I know it will be a great event where we can put the "fun" in fundraising for our important projects. What other way would you like to support the community than having a blast with your friends!?

The best part is that a "Toast to the Future" Gala is not only for SEF Board members -- it's also for the community. We get the opportunity to invite our other friends, family, and significant others to learn more about SEF while having a good time. All are welcome! All are also welcome to become a Patron level donor and support the development of student programs even more! The invitations will be going out soon and you will be able to invite your friends and family for a great event. I can't wait to see you there!

A "Toast to the Future" Community Party
Thanks for Your Support!

Our recent Community Party fundraiser was a success with more than 100 tickets sold and $3,000 raised. We partnered with Ogopogo Brewery this year, our gracious hosts for the Thursday evening event. (Be sure to visit if you haven't already checked them out.) Thanks also to STONEFIRE Grill in Pasadena for donating dinner.  Proceeds from  the ticket sales go towards educational programs in the San Gabriel Unified School District.

As an added bonus, it felt wonderful bringing together members of the community from all backgrounds! We had so much fun, and we hope that if you weren't able to attend you'll join us next year.

SEF Distinguished Author Series Presentations
(4th & 5th Grade)

SEF believes that author visits can make a huge difference in the lives of students. The presentations complement school curriculum, inspire students in their school work and can even change the lives of students by sparking their imaginations and giving them the confidence they need to get started writing their own stories or books.
Recently, more than 680 4th & 5th grade students on all five elementary sites were treated to assembly presentations provided by author Julie Berry. During the presentations the distinguished author shared stories and ideas behind some of her beloved books. She also shared some helpful tips for students eager to get started on their creative writing. We believe her visits will help to make the writing process real to students. It was great to see the creativity flowing for the many students who participated in the after school writing workshops.

To highlight the series, SEF donated more than 300 of Ms. Berry's highlighted book, The Emperor's Ostrich, to be distributed among the five elementary sites.

Thank you Julie Berry for sharing your high energy presentations with our students and thank you SEF donors for your support of the foundation which allows us to bring programs like this to the students in our schools!
Books and Boba Event for Jefferson Middle School Students

SEF partnered with LABOBATORY to bring our first JMS Books and Boba Event on February 15th and it was a blast! Kids enjoyed receiving riddles that led them through an on-campus a scavenger hunt to search for their prizes. After they reached a destination, they received a bookmark, a pencil, and 2 books with the final prize being a boba, courtesy of Labobatory. The owner of Labobatory also surprised the kids and volunteers with amazing magic tricks which left everyone in awe. It was a great event that brought the JMS school and community together.

Thank you to San Gabriel Women's Foundation for the generous grant funding and Labobatory for donating bobas for the event. Thank you JMS for making it possible to host the event on campus. Finally, thank you to all the volunteers that dedicated their time and supported the event. We appreciate your continued support for our students and community.

Why Do You Support SEF?
I have two kids going to schools in the district. Both of them have  benefited  from the programs that SEF supports. SEF's funding helps enrich schools' activities and provides opportunities for the kids to explore their interest. What SEF has been doing is both important, and valuable for the students. Noteworthy to mention, SEF fully funds the Naviance counseling program, a college and career readiness platform for all high school students. SEF will continue to seek more opportunities for the students and bring in more interesting programs. I am glad that I can contribute and be part of the effort.

What is Your Favorite Memory from School?
When I was in the elementary school, I performed dance with other kids in the school events. I still keep touch with them and the few pictures that some of us are able to keep become the precious memory.

What do You Do in Your Free Time?
I like to do yoga, go hiking, and watch movies.  Plants are my new interest. Feel good to see them grow and blossom.
