Donate to the 2018 Spirit of Giving Program

Tukwila Parks & Recreation is gearing up for their community's annual giving program, the Spirit of Giving. The program provides toys and items of need to children and families who are homeless, low-income or in troubled situations.

Last year this program helped over 300 children. This year's goal is to help 350 or more children in Tukwila. The generosity of businesses, groups, and individuals will help provide warm clothing, important household necessities, engaging toys, books and games. Will you help us reach our goal to help Tukwila's children?

Our staff is here to help make this a positive experience, below are ways to become involved.

Distributing gifts and Volunteering: Program recipients are recommended by Tukwila School District employees and Tukwila's Human Services Department. Families receive a personal invitation to a special event held in December. At the event, parents and caregivers select toys, educational games, clothing, grocery gift cards, and basic household items. Kids are entertained with activities and treats. There are several opportunities for volunteering, either as an individual or as a group.  Volunteers are needed to help shop, work the December giving event, and much more.

Unwrapped Items: Donate new, unwrapped items for children or teens and their families. Blankets, coats, mittens, hats, toys, games, and basic household items are all needed. Our staff can provide a list of the most requested items to help with shopping efforts.

Host a Toy, Food or Blanket Drive: Our staff can provide a collection bin, promotional materials, and coordinate regular pick-ups.

Donate Cash or Gift Cards: Too busy to shop? Contribute cash or store gift cards and leave the shopping to us - we have several volunteers who love shopping. We even have some brave black Friday and cyber Monday shoppers to help make your dollars stretch. Contact us to see how you can make cash donations tax deductible. Donations can be dropped off or mailed to Tukwila Parks and Recreation, 12424 42nd Ave South, Tukwila WA 98168 or via  Paypal (select donate now button below or search Paypal): [email protected] or  Venmo:  Tukwilachildrensfoundation

Together, with the partners like Strong Bridge Envision and the Tukwila Children's Foundation, we will make a difference in the lives of Tukwila children and their families. We thank you for your consideration, if you would like to discuss this program further, please contact Stephanie Gardner at 206-768-2822 or [email protected].

Tukwila Police officer saves 6-month-old baby

What did you do on Halloween? Dustin Johnson, a Tukwila police officer who's only been with the department since May, saved a life. Officer Johnson decided to work a few extra hours on Halloween. He and several officers responded to a call at an apartment unit off Tukwila International Boulevard.

When they arrived, Officer Johnson saw a 6-month-old baby on the ground struggling to breathe, tongue swollen and hot to the touch. He cleared her airway and started CPR until she became responsive.

Having overcome her 104.5° temperature, Baby Lamiayla is now home and doing much better. Officer Johnson - who received photos and videos from the mother - recently enjoyed a baby/officer reunion.

Officer Johnson joined Tukwila Police after 12 years in Baton Rouge, where he earned several awards for his life-saving efforts. Officer Johnson is one of several lateral (experienced) officers coming to the Police Department during the past year.

Use transit? Your input is requested

This fall, Metro is asking those who live or work in Tukwila to help them identify local mobility needs that might be filled through their Community Connections program.

Tukwila is well connected to the regional transit network, but geographic and physical barriers, including I-405 and I-5, limit some uers' access to this network. Many residents live in places that are not within walking distance of transit, and current transit options in several of the city's neighborhoods are indirect or infrequent. Additionally, the Tukwila International Boulevard Station and Interurban Avenue South park & ride lots are nearly full by early morning.

Metro wants to hear from you about your transportation needs! Please take their survey by December 14. For a hard copy survey, call 206-431-3670, or go online to SurveyMonkey.com/r/TukwilaCC.
