The desire to help people has always been a passion for Dr. Abheha Satkunaratnam.  It's what laid the groundwork for his career in medicine and what guides him to volunteer his time teaching West African drumming to youth at a community centre. 

" A big reason why I decided to come to North York General Hospital was because I know that comprehensive women's health is a big priority here," he says.  "We have one of the largest obstetrical units in the city, a great neonatal intensive care unit and a very well regarded group of health care providers in obstetrical care and surgical gynaecology."

Time is brain: What you should know about strokes

Call 911 if you think you are having a stoke.
The phrase "time is brain" refers to the short window of time physicians can treat the brain after a stroke. The sooner treatment can begin, the better the outcome. "Time is brain, and therefore patients must seek medical care at the first sign of a stroke," says Dr. Daniel Wong, Division Head of Neurology. 
Tips on visiting a patient
NYGH has launched a Family Presence Policy enhancing the ability of defined family members to have improved patient access.
We only have the best intentions when visiting someone in the hospital. We think about cheering them up, keeping them company and how our visit might comfort them.

However, there are some behaviours and gifts we should avoid when visiting a hospital patient to make it a pleasant and safe experience for everyone.

Patient and family advisors are integrated into the daily activities of the Freeman Centre for the Advancement of Palliative Care.
The Freeman Centre for the Advancement of Palliative Care has been recognized as a Leading Practice by Accreditation Canada for delivering high quality care to patients and families. Since 2012, patient and family advisors have been integrated into the program's day-to-day operations in a meaningful way.
