Spring is here, the weather can't make up its mind, and April, just around the corner, is supposed to be the cruelest month. But we're intent on making it the best literary month of 2019 so far. We're excited to start with
three free events we're hosting the first weekend in April. We hope you'll get out your calendars and save the dates!
(And, don't forget that the Writers' League will be in the Exhibitor Fair at the
San Antonio Book Festival on Saturday, April 6. That means we'll be part of events in three different Texas cities in the same weekend! More on our SABF plans soon.)
We hope that you'll come out and say hello at one or two or all of these events. And, if you know any other writers or readers, bring them along!

WLT's On the Craft of Writing

We're excited to introduce a new program: WLT's On the Craft of Writing. A few times a year, the WLT will partner with area organizations to host a free event from a visiting author on the craft behind their book. Our debut event wil take place in Austin, but we already have plans for Houston and Dallas events. It features David Treuer, whose most recent book, the New York Times bestselling The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee, mixes history, memoir, and reportage to create a sweeping history--and counter-narrative--of Native American life from the Wounded Knee massacre to the present.

The Event
Treuer will discuss the process of combining different genres to create a hybrid nonfiction account, an increasingly popular form that uses memoir as just one tool available to the nonfiction writer. He will give a short lecture and then be in conversation with WLT Program Director Michael Noll. Books will be for sale, with a signing to follow.

One of Austin's most beloved reading series - One Page Salon - is teaming up with the Writers' League of Texas and WordSpace's annual Lit Hop event for a road trip to Dallas for an evening of quick readings, slow drinking, and lots of literary shenanigans.
One Page Salon (called "the best literary evening in town" by the Austin American-Statesman) is the brainchild of novelist, screenwriter, and comedian Owen Egerton.
Four outstanding writers will read one page from a work in progress, and there will be time for networking, the on-the-spot One Sentence Salon, and more!

The three-act-structure has been used in screenwriting for decades, and it can be just as useful for novels. Thinking about an "inciting incident," "turning points," and a "rock bottom revelation" can help writers create an outline before they begin a manuscript or sort out writer's block after they've begun. Participants will leave this class with an outline or a structure format to consult during revisions.
To illustrate 3-act structure, Carolyn will discuss the Harrison Ford film Witness. Students are recommended to watch the film or remind themselves of its plot before class.

This class is filled with actual down-on-the-ground advice about how to revise in the most efficient, effective way, including
- The right revision style for you
- The key: revising in passes
- Checking for consistent POV
- Writing "in-scene"
- That crucial final read, and much more.

This two
-day workshop is designed to address the needs of the intermediate or advanced fiction writer. In an intimate setting (10 students maximum), registrants--with the guidance of an experienced instructor--workshop pages from a novel or short story in progress, submitted in advance. This experience (modeled after the MFA workshop style) is an invaluable opportunity for writers to both receive and offer constructive criticism, delve into the more complex elements of writing, and take their craft to the next level.
