January at the Library: It's Warm Inside
A proud creator poses with her gingerbread house in an afternoon program on Dec. 27.
With the holidays behind us, we head into our first full month of winter with a variety of programs at the Edgartown Library. We hope you'll read the listings below to get all the details.

In the last weeks of December we've been working on the library's pages for inclusion in the Town of Edgartown's 2017 Annual Report. Our circulation numbers continued to grow in the fiscal year ending July 1, but the most dramatic change was in attendance at our programs. From last year to this year we saw attendance grow from 3,990 to 9,169 people, an increase of more than 200 percent. The library's program room is proving itself as one of the Island's great civic spaces, and we are so grateful for the opportunities it gives us to enrich our community's cultural life.

One of the joys of this winter at the library is the chance to see a tremendously gifted artist at work. Margot Datz continues to amaze us with the artistry and care she is pouring into her mural project in the Children's Room. She's often at her work during the afternoon hours and on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings when the library is open late. We encourage you to drop by and see her at work -- we promise you'll be amazed.

Wishing all our patrons a safe and happy new year --

beginning Jan. 10
.
Please note, this series is for adults.

This stirring and soulful film recreates the journey across South America by Ernesto "Che" Guevara before his revolutionary days.  Directed by Walter Salles. (Argentina, 2004)

Badlands
Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m.

Director Terrence Malick was inspired by real-life teenage killers Charles Starkweather and Caril-Ann Fugate for his tale of lovers pursued across the vastness of America.  (US, 1973)

The Trip to Spain

Popcorn Movie Night: The Battle of the Sexes
6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9

A big, glossy recreation of the media circus surrounding the 1973 Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs tennis match. Rich in period detail, and with strong performances by Emma Stone and Steve Carell, the story remains relevant forty-five years later. Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. (US, 2017)
All adults welcome.
Birding with Rob Culbert:
Saturday, Jan. 13, 10 a.m.

On our winter birding excursion, ecologist and naturalist Robert Culbert will lead a lucky group of bird fanciers to one of his good viewing spots to concentrate on island waterfowl. Space is limited so please call or stop in at the library for further information and to sign up.

Opera Club Presents  Claudio Monteverdi's L'Orfeo
1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 14

Widely regarded as opera's first masterwork, L'Orfeo is based on the Greek myth of Orpheus' descent to Hades in his attempt to bring his dead bride Eurydice back to the living world. It was written in 1607 for a court performance during the annual Carnival at Mantua. L'Orfeo is fascinating to experience as it is the earliest opera that is still regularly performed. We'll hear the Les Arts Florissants production from February 2017, with a fine ensemble of instrumentalists and singers.
Book Group Meets
4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17

The Edgartown Library book group, moderated by Jean Stone, is enjoying another season of lively discussions -- always on the third Wednesday of the month. Remember that this group is open to all, and that our library staff can help you get a copy of this month's book to read.

Up for discussion on Jan. 17 is Desert Remains, a novel by Steven Cooper set in the American Southwest, where the caves around Phoenix are the bloody playgrounds for a psychopath. As the body count rises, Det. Alex Mills turns to the unconventional Gus Parker, a reluctant "intuitive medium." Writes Library Journal: "The psychic twist makes Cooper's riveting series launch a standout from the crowd of routine police procedurals."
An Introduction to Essential Oils:
With Galen Brew
2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20

Are you seeking natural ways to improve your health and personal care routine, reduce the toxic load in your home, or elevate your emotional well-being?  Join us for an informal and informative session to learn the basics about essential oils and how they support health and wellness. With Galen Brew, doTerra essential oils outreach educator, we'll explore the most popular and versatile oils for sleep, energy, digestion, immune support, emotional balance, and cleansing, and how to individualize their usage. All adults welcome.
Adventures in Slow Cooking
Coq Au Vin: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23

The return of our monthly crockpot cooking series begins with a French bistro staple, coq au vin. Who can resist the aroma of a plump chicken slow-cooking in a sauce of mushrooms, onion, and red wine? We'll have a demonstration of the cooking technique and get to sample the delicious results.
Space is limited for this monthly program, so please call the library or stop in to sign up.
