Listen While You Work!

You've attended a Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) Grower Training to comply with the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule. . . so now what?

The Farmers Union Produce Safety Podcast is an educational series for fruit and vegetable farmers that takes the PSA classroom learning into the field! Hosted by the late Chris Blanchard of Purple Pitchfork, this podcast shares produce safety requirements and best practices-- from harvesting to record-keeping-- so that you can take this knowledge and easily apply it your operation. Each episode covers different topics and ranges from 5-20 minutes in length.

We hope the podcast will be a great audio companion as you seed in your greenhouse, weed in the garden, and (safely) harvest and handle your produce!

The Farmers Union Produce Safety Podcast is free and available for download on iTunes or online. The podcast was produced by Wisconsin Farmers Union, with support and funding from the National Farmers Union, Local Food Safety Collaborative, and the Food and Drug Administration.

From the Farm: Historic White Oak Pastures Embraces a Food Safety Culture
In our "From the Farm" blog series, we're bringing you food safety stories, opinions, best practices and lessons learned from family farmers across the country!

Meet farmer Sarah Jordan, the Organic Vegetable Farm Manager for White Oak Pastures. White Oak Pastures is a six-generation, 152-year-old family farm in Bluffton, Georgia. They take pride in farming practices that focus on regenerative land management, humane animal husbandry, and revitalizing their rural community. They are fiercely proud of their zero-waste production system that utilizes all parts of the animals they pasture-raise and hand-butcher on the farm .

We had the pleasure of meeting Sarah at a Produce Safety Alliance (PSA) Grower Training that LFSC hosted at White Oak Pastures. We asked Sarah a few questions about how this historic farm considers food safety in its daily operations.

  5. FSMA Legal Research Webinar: A summary of NECAFS' efforts to help identify and prioritize legal research questions within the produce community. The findings and outcomes from a national survey and input from advisors from across the country (produce growers, educators, trade associations, advocates, regulators, and attorneys) is also provided.
  6. Water Quality Testing Lab Maps: Two Coordination Centers tasked with advancing and providing food safety training and technical assistance have launched maps to assist growers in locating labs that can test the quality of agricultural water:
World Food Safety Day
"If it isn't safe, then it isn't food"- Food and Agriculture Organization

Keeping food safe is a complex process that starts on the farm and ends with the consumer. Cognizant of the urgent need to raise awareness and inspire action at all levels, the United Nations General Assembly designated June 7, 2019 as the first ever World Food Safety Day.
