Mr. Sanfilippo's Announcements    

Dear Bassett Families, 

You may have heard that longtime second grade teacher,  Mrs. Barb DeCoste, has retired. 

Mrs. DeCoste is someone who exemplifies excellence in teaching. She has had  such an impact on so many students through the years, and we will all miss her.

If you would like to write a note  to Mrs. DeCoste, please send it into the office and we will deliver it to her. 

Mrs. Blayney will continue teaching Mrs. DeCoste's class for the remainder of the school year. Mrs. Blayney taught at Bassett for many years and we are grateful she can be with us.

Veterans Day
Bassett is proud to host its 8th annual Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony on  Friday, November 9 at 8:45 am. This year's theme is "Bassett Salutes Our Veterans." Families are welcome to attend. 

The  Veterans Day packet  was sent home last week. It  includes: 1) a letter that explains the ways in which Bassett students will pay tribute to our veterans, 2) an RSVP form for the ceremony on November 9, and 3) a "Salute Our Veterans" home activity. 
 
Items due by WEDNESDAY
In preparation for Veterans Day, we ask that you submit these items by Wednesday, October 24:
  • Photos for Bassett's Wall of Honor
  • RSVP for the ceremony if you and/or guests will be attending
  • "Salute Our Veterans" home activity.

3rd Grade Testing
3rd grade students will take the State of Ohio Test in English Language Arts (AIR test)  on Tuesday, October 23 and Wednesday, October 24 Information was sent to parents last week and is available  here



4th Grade Field Trip
Our 4th grade classes are going to Ramseyer Farms on Tuesday, October 23 at 8:30 am.  Students will explore Ohio's history and geography and use their mapping skills as they work together through a maze of Ohio.

Students should bring a packed lunch and drink in a disposable bag and dress for the weather. 



Math Club
Math Club starts Thursday, October 25, 2:20-3:20 pm for those who are signed up. Please be sure to send in a note to your child's teacher that your child is going to Math Club.  

SIGN UP BY WEDNESDAY!
You have until Wednesday, October 24 at 8:00 am to sign up for Math Club.

To sign up you must: 1) c omplete the  e-form AND 2) s ubmit the 
permission slip  with payment.

End of First Quarter
Thursday, October 25 is the last day of the first quarter. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, November 2. 



Halloween
We are looking forward to a fun Halloween celebration at Bassett on  Wednesday, October 31, 1:15-2:00 pm. Thank you to our PTA for coordinating the details.

Fall Fundraiser Orders
If you participated in our Fall Fundraiser (gift wrap, holiday treats, cookie dough. etc.), please pick up your order on  Wednesday, October 24, 2:30-6:00 pm. in the Bassett gym. 

Ice Skating Party
If you are looking for a fun activity for Friday, October 26 (no school), Westlake Council of PTAs' Ice Skating Party for grades K-6 is 11:30-1:30 pm at Rocky River Ice Rink. More information is below.

Tuesday, October 23 is Bassett Pizza Night! It's easy to participate...j ust place an order with Marco's Pizza anytime on October 23 and Marco's will donate  15% of all phone orders, and 20% of all online orders back to Bassett.

The offer is good for delivery and carry-out orders.  How easy is that!? And there's no cooking required!  

Pizza Boxes from Harvest Day
If your child decorated a pizza box at Harvest Day, you can have your pizza delivered in the box they decorated! Details are on the Pizza Box Night flyer.
  • If you are ordering by phone, simply request the Harvest Day box and tell Marco's your child's name and teacher. 
  • If you are ordering online, follow the instructions on the flyer.

CEREAL & OATMEAL DRIVE
Thank you for your generosity!

Thank you to all the Bassett families and staff who donated cereal and oatmeal to the May Dugan/Westlake Assistance food and toiletry drive! 

We went over our goal of 400 items and collected a total of 570 items! 
 
Congratulations to our top classrooms! 1) Mrs. Spieth's class: 102 items. 2) Mrs. Blayney's class: 77 items. 3) Ms. Gerhan's class: 65 items.
 
The food and toiletry drive was a huge success district-wide! On Saturday, 330 canned goods, 1,350 jars of peanut butter and jelly, 2,522 boxes of cereal/oatmeal, toiletries, and over $100 in cash was delivered to the May Dugan Center.

SKATING PARTY FOR 
STUDENTS IN GRADES K-6
Friday, Oct. 26

THIS FRIDAY! Westlake Council of PTAs invites grades K-6 students at Bassett, Dover, Hilliard, Holly Lane, and Dover Intermediate to an ice skating party on Friday, October 26, 11:30 am-1:30 pm, at Rocky River Hamilton Ice Rink, 21018 Hilliard Blvd.  (There is no school on October 26.)
 
Admission is $5 (cash only) and skate rental is $3.50 (or may bring own skates). This is  not a drop-off event - adult supervision is required.

REFLECTIONS
Creative Arts Contest
 
Students in all grades are invited to participate in Reflections! Reflections is an annual PTA-sponsored creative arts contest. This year's theme is,  Heroes Around Me
  • Categories include: visual arts, literature, photography, music composition, dance choreography, and film production.
  • The Reflections Quick Start flyer is here. This flyer provides guidelines for each category. The Reflections entry form is here.
  • Entries are due at the Bassett office by Monday, November 12.  

Artwork will be displayed at the Reflections Art Show on Thursday, November 29, 3:30-7:00 pm at Westlake Porter Public Library. There will be a Reflections awards ceremony in February.

Election Day is  Tuesday, November 6 . If you can't make it to the polls on November 6 or would prefer to vote early:

  • Candidate Information - The League of Women Voters has nonpartisan information here. Input your address and get specific information for your ballot.
  • Judge InformationJudge4Yourself - The Judicial Candidates Rating Coalition works with the four bar associations to give ratings on all judges.  
  • Find your polling place - If you are not sure of your polling place, you can find it  here.

WESTLAKE MUSIC BOOSTERS

Westlake Music Boosters supports Westlake Schools music programs and teachers from pre-K through 12th grade.
  • The Westlake High School fall choral concert is Monday, October 22 at 7:00 pm at the Westlake Schools Performing Arts Center.
  • Westlake High School Varsity Football has its last home game on Friday, October 26 at 7:00 pm. The WHS Marching Band, "The Pride of Westlake" will perform. 
  • Music Boosters' fundraiser with Landmark Lawn and Garden Supply runs through December 31.
