The Central Committee met at Democratic Election Headquarters on Thursday October 18. Ken Hunt reported that the 34th Senatorial Committee needed to select representatives to the State Committee. Paula Willmarth and Bill Caldwell will be our representatives.
Candidates Mitch Weber and a representative of Martin T. Rucker II were introduced and spoke about GOTV efforts now underway. Stacy Webb made a brief presentation about Amendment 1 known as the Clean Missouri Initiative which, if passed, will reform the redistricting process, limit contributions from lobbyists and require a two year waiting period for elected officials to become lobbyists. https://www.cleanmissouri.org . There was also a presentation from a representative from Jobs with Justice on Proposition B which, if passed will raise the minimum wage. Alice Wadsworth distributed a summary of all ballot issues that will appear on the November. There was a discussion of each on. The summary and recommendations are attached to this newsletter.
Mary Bay reported that the Voter Protection Hotline number is (833)336-8683. Lawyers will be on call to help if there are any problems. Be sure to ask for a Provisional Ballot if your name does not appear on voter registration rolls.
Katey Fairchild reported that the first phase of the Get Out the Vote efforts are beginning. Volunteers are needed to knock on doors and make phone calls. The phone number for election Headquarters is (816) 351-7068.

The Women's Club met at Democratic Election Headquarters on Monday October 8 for our last meeting before the midterm elections. On the agenda were announcements of upcoming campaign events and what became a very successful photo shoot for candidate David Park for Presiding Commissioner of Platte County.
The program presented by Peggy Gorenflo, MSW and P.O. Mark Canovi was an introduction to the Missouri Crisis Intervention Team (MO CIT). The program provides training to police officers for dealing with someone in a behavioral health crisis. The program are broad collaborations of law enforcement, behavioral health professionals, hospitals, emergency departments and community partners that recruit, train and support law enforcement officers to respond effectively to individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis. The objective of CIT training is to de-escalate individuals in crisis, to divert them from the criminal justice system and connect them to appropriate behavioral health resources.
When someone is in a behavioral health crisis they urged us to ask for a CIT officer when calling 911. For more information

Lee Karbaumer provided a report on the Immigrant Justice Advocacy Movement - Court Watch Training. Court Watchers attend hearings in pairs or more and have simple forms to complete to summarize what they observe. Training is required. We hope to arrange for a Court Watch Training program through the Women's Club at some time after the November 6 election. Those who have questions may contact IJAM

Democratic Candidates and Ballot Issues

With Election Season 2018 underway Platte County has excellent candidates running for every Statewide and State Legislative office. Liking our candidate's Facebook pages is an excellent way to keep in touch with what is happening and where. It is also one of the most economical ways for candidates to reach you. We need everyone to participate in any way they can. Talk to your friends and neighbors, help us knock on doors, make phone calls, address post cards. Hold a neighborhood meeting to meet your local candidate and discuss pressing issues. Join us in writing letters to the editor on important issues.

What You Need to Know About the
November 6th Platte County Ballot Measures
|
The November 6th Ballot will include seven (7) ballot issues; the language and purpose of these issues can be confusing. There are four Constitutional Amendments and three Propositions. "An Amendment" makes a change to the Missouri State Constitution. Those changes cannot be changed again without another vote of the people. A "Proposition" is a State "Statue" and can be changed by a vote of the State Legislature. For more information on all seven issues:

We recommend that you be familiar the ballot issues before you go to vote. Allow extra time for voting because some voters will be seeing these questions for the first time. They will need time to read and decide how to vote.
Amendment 1 : Elections - Addresses lobbying, campaign finance and redistricting procedures -
Also Known as "The Clean Mo. Initiative". Recommended vote YES
Amendment 2: Marijuana
- Legalizes marijuana for medical purposes - imposes 4% tax on sales of marijuana. Recommended vote YES*
Amendment 3: Marijuana - Legalizes marijuana for medical purposes - imposes 15% tax on sales of
to establish a state research institute. Recommended vote NO*
Amendment 4: Gambling
- Changes requirement to manage bingo games and advertising at bingo games.
Proposition B
: Minimum Wage - Increases Minimum Wage to $12 over several years. Recommended vote YES
Proposition C: Marijuana - Legalizes marijuana for medical purposes - imposes 2% tax on sales of marijuana. Recommended vote NO*
Proposition D: Taxes
- Increases gas tax 10 cents over several years, funds Missouri Highway Patrol, provides tax exemption for Olympic prizes, and creates fund for projects to improve roads and alleviate bottleneck traffic.
*There are three ballot measures dealing with medical marijuana. If you approve of making the use of marijuana legal for medical purposes vote for ONLY ONE. If more than one proposal passes, the proposal with the most votes will be enacted.
