New on the CNS Blog: Putting Together the Puzzle of Adaptive Constructive Memory
The image most often used to describe how memory works is that of a video recorder retaining impressions in real time of each event, and your brain then plays back those impressions when calling up a memory. But that is but a memory myth. The image Harvard cognitive neuroscientist Daniel Schacter draws on to describe memory is instead an act of construction, "something like assembling a jigsaw puzzle from fragmentary bits and pieces." Indeed, he calls memory an "adaptive constructive process" - a process he has illuminated throughout his career and for which he is receiving the Distinguished Career Contributions Award from CNS this March at its annual meeting in San Francisco. But for some, a heightened level of focus on one task known as hyperfocus can occur. Often occurring in people with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), hyperfocus is a new area of neuroscientific research that would benefit from more attention from the cognitive neuroscience community. IWORDD 2019 - International Workshop on Reading and Developmental Dyslexia

Dear Researcher,
We're inviting you to the third edition of the International Workshop on Reading and Developmental Dyslexia in San Sebastián!
iWORDD was created back in 2013 with the aim to bring together researchers interested in understanding the causes and manifestations of developmental dyslexia and attempts to address the theoretical issues faced in this field.
Across two full days (October, 2nd -3th), the third edition of iWORDD will feature four excellent invited speakers whose theoretical views will cover various issues related to the impact of cross-linguistic variations on the manifestations of reading development and reading disorders. Questions linked to how structural differences amongst languages modulate reading acquisition and reading disorders will be addressed as well as important timely issues such as multilingualism and second language learning.
iWORDD will therefore offer the research community the opportunity to get a broad overview of the current cross-linguistic theories underlying research in the field, while helping outline future directions in the investigation of developmental dyslexia.
With it limited size, iWORDD will encourage interactions among invited speakers and researchers during the four keynote lectures, invited symposiums, oral as well as poster sessions.
Coupled with the aim of generating new ideas to advance our field from theoretical perspectives, the ultimate goal of iWORDD is to highlight innovative thinking which could play in important role in clinical practice and education. With this in mind, a day devoted to linking theory to practice which will be open to a broader audience will take place after the two days of scientific meeting between researchers (October, 4th).

The 5th Meeting of the Society for the Neuroscience of Creativity (SfNC) meeting will be held on Friday, March 22 2019 in San Francisco, CA, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, preceding the Cognitive Neuroscience Society meeting (March 23-26, 2019).

* The evening program will consist of catered dinner and an education-focused design workshop, and will take place from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. The workshop will include a brainstorming session in which educators and researchers will team up, with the guidance of design-thinking experts, to generate new designs for improving (1) communication/learning between educators and researchers; and (2) allocation of community and educational resources for enhancing creativity in students and teachers.

Attention and Awareness II: A Festschrift in Honor of Robert Rafal

This series of talks will cover historical and contemporary perspectives on the neural basis of attention and awareness. Speakers will pay special tribute to the contributions and influences of Professor Robert Rafal, a cognitive and behavioral neurologist whose career focused on better understanding the neural underpinnings of attention, consciousness, eye movements, and perception. During his highly influential research career so far, Professor Rafal has elucidated important and distinct roles of the superior colliculus, thalamus, and the temporo-parietal junction in the orienting of attention, and also demonstrated unconscious processing in blindsight and hemispatial neglect.

We seek a post-doctoral research associate for NIH-funded research on age-related changes in memory and how this interacts with sleep.
The candidate must have completed or be in the process of completing a PhD in Psychology, Neuroscience, Biology, or other related discipline. Training in statistical methods, mastery of English speaking and writing, and experience working with human subjects are required. Successful candidates must have keen attention to detail; ability to work professionally with participants and other trainees; and strong organization, problem solving, and analytic skills.
We seek a post-doc who is motivated and ambitious, who is prepared for a hands-on research experience including the use of new tasks and techniques, and who is prepared to be an intellectual contributor to the research. Responsibilities will include: (1) conducting experiments in young and older adults (behavioral and physiological (EEG, fMRI) data collection); (2) data processing and analysis; (3) training and supervising graduate students, undergraduate students, and project assistants; (4) contributing to administrative duties of the lab; (5) assisting with research protocols and compliance; and (6) contributing to data dissemination (poster presentations, manuscript submissions).
The lab is in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences and part of the Neuroscience and Behavior Program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Amherst is in the beautiful western part of Massachusetts with plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities and scenery. Situated close to Boston, Providence, and New York City, the lab offers many opportunities to attend lectures and workshops and visit labs in the New England region.

Postdoctoral Position
Postdoctoral position focused on the neurobiological basis of predictive processing and statistical learning.

The main project will focus on the oscillatory correlates of predictive processing in vision and audition with a special focus on neural entrainment phenomena and top-down control. The project is part of a collaborative research effort of the BCBL with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem funded by the ERC with PIs: Ram Frost (Hebrew U), Craig Richer (BCBL), Nicola Molinaro (BCBL). The expected time frame is one year with a possible extension to another year.
The project is based upon a set of EEG and MEG experiments that will be designed to uncover the neural mechanisms supporting predictive processing - across sensory modalities and cognitive domains. The long-term goal is to evaluate the role that such predictive skills play in second language learning, and how these are implemented neurobiologically.
We are interested in candidates with a high level of independence, familiarity with EEG or MEG, as well as computing tools (Python/Matlab). Candidates should demonstrate a convincing publication record.
The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers studying the cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying statistical learning, predictive processing and language learning, and research will be carried out primarily at the BCBL, with stays at the and Hebrew U.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship in the Exercise for Brain Health Lab

The Exercise for Brain Health (E4BH) Laboratory in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Maryland, directed by Dr. J. Carson Smith, is focused on understanding how exercise and physical activity affect human brain function and mental health. Our methods include functional and structural MRI as well as behavioral measures of cognitive and physical function with young and older adults. The focus of this position will be to support an NIH-NIA funded clinical trial to determine the effects of exercise training on brain and cognitive function in older adults at increased genetic risk for Alzheimer's Disease.
Preferred qualifications include: 1) a PhD in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Kinesiology, or related field; 2) research experience collecting, processing and/or analyzing human MRI data; and 3) excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. A post-doctoral position is available starting Spring/Summer 2019 in the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Children's National Hospital System (Center for Neuroscience/Children's Research Institute) and the George Washington University, Washington DC. This position involves the application of state-of-the-art functional and structural MRI imaging methods. The fellow will apply methods previously developed but not used in epilepsy as well as develop novel computational imaging methods. Our aim is to apply sophisticated approaches to answer clinical questions (e.g., identify seizure focus through fMRI; develop sensitive MRI metrics of cognitive reorganization; examine pre-post surgical changes structurally and functionally).
The fellow will have the opportunity to initiate his/her own research projects, mine existing data, and to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, cognitive neuroscientists fellows, graduate students, and research assistants.
The appointment is for one year, renewable for up to three years upon mutual agreement. The PEMDAS (Physical Exercise Movement Dynamics Aging and Stimulation) Laboratory at Emory University seeks a post-doctoral research associate to assist with research performed within the Atlanta VA and the Departments of Rehabilitation Medicine and Neurology at Emory University.
The successful candidate will have interest in contributing to research focused on investigating changes in neural function as a result of aging and/or regular engagement in cardiovascular training. Successful candidates will also have a record of successfully conducting independent research as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and/or national presentations. Candidates should have a strong background in structural and functional brain imaging including fMRI and rsfMRI. Experience with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is also required including use of neuronavigated TMS for both assessment and neuromodulation.
A strong background in Unix systems is preferred. Candidates are also desired who possess experience in research using human models of exercise as well as a working knowledge of biostatistics. Interpersonal skills and professionalism are highly valued.
The position provides excellent opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary environment and have close interactions with MR physicists, exercise scientists, neuroscientists, physical therapists, neurologists, radiologists, and speech and language pathologists.

The Fellow will analyze data from clinical trials examining behavioral interventions for treating posttraumatic stress disorder and chronic pain. Candidates should have an interest in the mechanism of action of interventions, with an emphasis on processes related to cognition (sleep, memory consolidation), or autonomic nervous system function. Preference will be given to candidates with an interest in applied research, integrative health, or rehabilitation methods. Fellows will conduct studies and analyze data that will create the foundation for future treatments, and will develop innovative tools and measures for novel approaches to healthcare.

The lab is part of the Oregon Memory Group (http://oregonmemorygroup.uoregon.edu) and is interested in how memory influences, and is influenced by, selective attention with a focus on using behavioral and neuroimaging techniques (e.g. fMRI). The fellow will work with the PI in developing a research program reflective of mutual research interests in memory and attention. The fellow is expected to independently manage and execute the research program as well as provide supervision and mentorship to junior lab members as needed.
Applicants should possess a PhD degree or equivalent in psychology, neuroscience, computer science, or a related field by the time of employment and be eligible to work in the United States. Evidence of an existing, well-developed, and topically related research program is essential and past work with neuroimaging data (in particular fMRI) is especially valued. Prior experience with programming (MATLAB, Python, R) and fluency in statistics with a focus on empirical data analysis is also strongly desired.

The research focuses on fMRI studies of concept representations, with one focus on representations of scientific concepts, and another on differences between neurotypical and psychiatric populations.

One major study in the lab is the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, a national longitudinal study following brain development and health outcomes in over 10,000 children through adolescence into young adulthood.
The Research Assistant's primary responsibilities include participant retention and scheduling, data collection (behavioral, biospecimen, MRI neuroimaging), database management, and other administrative lab duties.
The ideal candidate will hold a B.A./B.S. in a related field such as psychology, neuroscience, or computer science and have experience working with human participants, especially children and adolescents. The Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC) Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program seeks to promote broader participation in training in the Learning Sciences. We bring students to LRDC who embody the diversity of our nation, region, and city. LRDC interns gain experience in the Learning Sciences (research on instruction and learning) by working projects with a faculty members who specialize in this area. Interns may also work with advanced graduate students or postdoctoral fellows in the faculty members' labs.
Faculty have primary appointments in the Department of Psychology, and the Schools of Education, Law, and Computing and Information. Although applications from all undergraduate students will be considered, these internships are most appropriate for students who will be entering the final year of undergraduate study.
These internships will provide valuable experience for students who intend to apply for graduate programs, and will include professional development seminars run by the internship director, other faculty, and LRDC graduate students. Professional development programs include topics such as applying to graduate school, writing a research statement, writing a CV, the imposter phenomenon, stereotype threat, and presenting research. The program concludes with a poster session at which the interns present what they have learned to the entire LRDC community.
The 2019 internship program will run from May 20-June 30, 2019 and all participants are expected to be in residence for the entire program. Housing and a stipend will be provided. A limited number of travel supplements are available to fund student travel to and from Pittsburgh. Eligibility requirements: Students should have a primary field of study in an area relevant to the learning sciences. The Long Term Memory Lab at the University of Virginia is seeking candidates for a full-time Lab Manager position. The goal of the research in the lab is to understand the neural mechanisms that support our ability to form and retrieve memories. The lab collects behavioral, scalp electroencephalographic(EEG), and/or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data while human subjects perform memory tasks.
This would be an excellent position for a recent graduate seeking to gain additional research experience prior to graduate school.
There will be training in multiple methods and opportunities for coauthorship on presentations and publications. The successful candidate will be highly-motivated, reliable, conscientious, and organized. Key responsibilities include scheduling and overseeing data collection. Other responsibilities include preparation and submission of human subject protocols and progress reports, data entry, and basic data analysis.
Candidates must have a Bachelor's Degree. Concentration in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, biomedical engineering,computer science, or any other related fields, desired. Previous research experience (>1 year) is highly recommended. Experience with a statistical software package (i.e. SPSS, STATA, SAS, R, MATLAB) is a plus. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered, including experience as an undergraduate research assistant.
Strong quantitative skills and familiarity with standard neuroimaging analysis methods are a plus, but not required. This position also requires candidates to be able to work independently in a high paced environment and take initiatives when necessary, multitask, and possess outstanding organizational skills.
