It has been a busy month on the Boulevard - our community is alive with mission and ministry in so many ways! I was blessed to see the full effect of that spirit at a gathering of our alumni in Washington D.C. just a few weeks ago. That night, dozens of BC High graduates gathered to celebrate their bonds of brotherhood and meet our new Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Kelly DeGregorio. It was incredibly heartening to see the fruits of their Jesuit education thriving in our nation's capital.

I carried the strength and hope from that gathering to a conference in Minneapolis with presidents of our partner institutions in the Jesuit Schools Network. After several days spent in prayerful collaboration I came away deeply humbled by the way our peers look to BC High as a national, and even global, leader in Jesuit education.

There is perhaps no better example of the impact Jesuit education can have on one's life than our very own Principal Steve Hughes '73, P'98. At a recent school-wide assembly we announced with great sadness his retirement at the end of this year after four decades of service, and nearly half of that as principal. It took several minutes to quiet the well-deserved cheers and applause from the students, faculty, and staff whose lives have been forever changed by his presence.

Although he is stepping back from the principal's office, BC High has been Steve's home since before he set foot on campus as a student in 1969. We know he will continue to be an important part of our community for years to come! On the Road
In addition to remarkable experiences at our D.C. alumni gathering and the JSN President's Conference, I was privileged to be a guest of Robert Lynch ’67 at the Americans for the Arts Gala along with Rev. Jim Keenan, SJ. As president and CEO of Americans for the Arts, it was terrific to see Bob's passion for art celebrated on the national stage. It is the selfsame reverence for art that we teach here on Morrissey Boulevard, rooted in the age-old Ignatian belief that the power of creative energy is reflective and transformative. In the coming months I'll have some exciting news to share about the arts at BC High - stay tuned!
On the Boulevard
Our community has not only been diligently working toward the end of the first academic term, but seeking the magis outside of the classroom as well. Here are just a few of the highlights:

  • Varsity Soccer fell just short of an MIAA Division 1 South Sectional Title after a phenomenal run that saw strong leadership from seniors and Coach Ryan's 300th career win.
  • Cross Country matched the best finish in 20 years with a second place finish in the Eastern Massachusetts Division 1 Cross Country Meet. William Cole-French '19 also won the Division 1 Senior 5K MSTCA Frank Mooney State Coaches Invitational with tremendous effort.
  • The Dever Players are currently performing John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. There are three shows left on 11/15, 11/16, and 11/17 - I highly recommend you experience this exceptional show!
  • Our Parent Groups continue to bring first-rate experiences to our community. This month author Mark Shriver joined us as the Father’s Club Communion Breakfast speaker. Local author, racial justice educator, and public speaker Debby Irving also conducted workshops with our community to explore systemic racism.
2018 BC High Golf Classic
More than 130 alumni, parents, and friends had a fantastic day raising money for The Fund for BC High while enjoying each other's company and some friendly competition at the 2018 BC High Golf Classic.

The Gift of Education
I am excited to share that Kelly DeGregorio and the Advancement team have secured a $1 million gift from an anonymous donor which will primarily be directed to our endowment through a scholarship, with a portion supporting our annual needs and the Fund for BC High.
