Timebank Elections

Congratulations to Tim Franco, Sandra BarMcQ, and Charles Clements! All three were elected to the timebank steering committee (TBSC) this month. We are elated to welcome them to the TBSC!

The election of our three new members allowed for the founding members of the TBSC to conclude their service with the committee. We are so grateful for the wisdom that Susan, Florence, Shelly, and Rosa have imparted to us, and will miss them dearly. Thank you for all you have set in motion on the TBSC!

Supporting Decision-Making in New Mexico

DACU members continued to be involved with the legislative session this February. Members traveled in groups to Santa Fe to participate in legislative action days with Strong Families NM, the New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness, and the ACLU. Multiple DACU members shared their lived experience related to homelessness and incarceration, making a big impression with elected officials on both sides of the aisle.

Before we began our trip home, we took time to visit our NMHEP partners at their home base in Santa Fe. We enjoyed a tour of their offices and ate lunch with fellow AmeriCorps VISTA members working with the Santa Fe Community Foundation.

DACC Student Project

Most semesters, DACU hosts DACC public health students as interns. This spring, Deborah Allen and Arturo Quezada are working with DACU to create an ongoing timebank presence on the NMSU and DACC campuses. This might take the form of a student club or an ongoing service learning project with various professors.

If you have ideas or suggestions of people at either school who might be helpful in this work, please contact Kari and she can put you in touch with Deborah and Arturo. We are excited to reach more college students through this project!

Just Community
Radio Show

Kari continues to broadcast her radio show Just Community on KTAL-LP every Thursday morning from 8 to 9 AM. (Locally, tune your dial to 101.5 FM, or listen to the show  online from anywhere in the world .)  The show focuses on social equity and features voices not often heard in our community. These guests and topics were featured in January:
  • Grace Telles (mentoring young women and working in corrections)
  • Richard Quinn (a creative writer drawing from life experience)
  • Erin Underwood (Amador Health Center, Run With Your Doc event coordinator)
  • Kay Lilley (in recognition of The Beloved Community's new office and non-profit status)
If you'd like to listen to archived shows or know someone who would be an interesting guest, please  contact Kari.

Richard shared an original spoken word piece on the air.

Mission:
Doña Ana Communities United (DACU) creates welcoming spaces for all people, especially those whose voices and stories go unheard. We build genuine relationships, carry out uplifting projects, and engage with local government.

DACU conducts two main projects. (1) Social equity mapping: Undervalued community members explore their neighborhoods and work with local decision makers to develop policies that advance health equity. Current efforts focus on the Community of Hope, Gallagher Park, the Nevada Neighborhood, and Lisa Drive in Chaparral. (2) hOurTime timebank: Members build social cohesion and practice an equitable form of alternative economics by exchanging  services.
