Happy National Chiropractic Health Month!

More than 80% of adults experience back pain sometime in their lifetime. As chiropractors, it is one of the most common complaint that we hear in our practice, a condition that responds well to the hands-on approach that is the philosophy behind chiropractic care.

Studies show that integrating chiropractic as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare program can enable improvements in pain intensity and improve healing naturally. We are very proud to be part of a profession that helps restore our patients' health without the dangerous, potentially addictive side effects that can accompany all-too-commonly prescribed pain medications.

We are happy to announce this month that we have expanded our acupuncture team! Dr. Reynolds recently completed an intensive three-year course of study and has received certification in acupuncture!  Call the office to schedule your session!

We'd like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank our patients who have trusted us with their healthcare, and to encourage those who haven't yet experienced the benefits of chiropractic and other natural health therapies we offer in our wellness center to come in for a visit during Chiropractic Health Month.

Yours in health ,

Acupuncture Helps Relieve Bone Pain in Breast Cancer Patients

Good news for women going through breast cancer treatment.

A new study just published in the Journal of the American Medical Association demonstrates that acupuncture is an effective modality for breast cancer patients who experience painful side effects of aromatase inhibitor therapy, hormone drugs that are used with patients who have hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. These drugs can slow or stop the growth of hormone receptor-positive tumors, but can also cause bone and joint pain.  In many cases, the pain is so severe that it makes walking, sitting, climbing or driving difficult, leading some patients to discontinue treatment. Study authors noted that those who underwent a course of acupuncture treatment experienced a significant reduction in pain after a 12-week followup.

Dr. Chiappino offers more insight into relieving pain through acupuncture in the video above, and also discusses essential oils for breast cancer survivors.   If you are a survivor struggling to cope with your new post-cancer life,  Dr. Chiappino's Healing Boobies program can help provide the support needed to adapt to your new norm and "get your happy back."   Visit www.healingboobies.com to register for her private Facebook support forum, or  to learn about her private consulting program.

Back to Basics for Back Pain Relief

Looking for effective relief of your back pain? Research shows that the best prescription is not found in your medicine cabinet. Many experts now agree that movement and exercise are the preferable treatment options for pain relief, an approach that chiropractors have been advocating for more than 100 years!

Surgery, bed rest or pain medications -- oftentimes dangerous opioids -- have been the typical recommendation by traditional practitioners for chronic back pain relief. Recent studies have shown that back pain can actually be worsened by bedrest and can trigger other conditions such as blood clots or depression.

Doctors are now rethinking traditional pain treatment options as research today supports non-drug alternatives as a preferred course of action. Exercise helps to strengthen the back and make it more flexible, helping to reduce pain. It has the added benefit of releasing endorphins, the body's natural painkillers. Massage therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic care, neurofeedback and yoga are excellent modalities to alleviate pain and promote healing.  Cognitive behavior therapy is also beneficial in producing long-term improvements in pain.

So next time pain has you sidelined, instead of reaching for a pill, reach for the sky with stretching exercise and yoga poses (always check with your doctor before starting a new exercise routine!). If your back pain persists, call our office. We can customize an interdisciplinary pain management plan to help restore your health and get you back in the game.  631.265.1223.

ADHD Month News:  Heavy Screen Time May Exacerbate Symptoms

Advances in technology are a mixed blessing: more helpful information at our fingertips allows for limitless learning, however the 24/7 access to games, social networks and the internet in general can be a dangerous temptation with real mental and physical health repercussions, including addiction.  In fact, earlier this summer, The World Health Organization officially designated "gaming disorder" as a diagnosable condition for those showing a pattern of out-of-control gaming behaviors. And now "tech neck," the term coined for back, shoulder and neck pain stemming from long periods of looking down at smartphones and other devices, has become a common complaint among young and old users of handheld technology.

Researchers have found that very frequent digital media activity may have an adverse effect over time, exacerbating symptoms of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), specifically attention span.  The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association this month, found that "Frequent distractions could disrupt normative development of sustained attention and organization skills."  Sensation seeking is one of the behaviors associated with ADHD; heavy screen time may satisfy the need for stimulation.   While the authors did not directly implicate heavy screen time in causing ADHD symptoms, they did suggest that further study is warranted.

Take away: parents play an important role in shaping healthy technology habits.  Avoiding screen-based media for children under 18 months old; setting limits, staying aware of the type of content being viewed are just a few of the recommendations made by The American Psychological Association.  (Check out the APA website to view guidelines for appropriate technology use for children of all ages.) Balancing technology use with other healthy outlets such as exercise, sports, and club participation is the key to support a child's physical and mental health.
