May 2019 - Issue No. 46
Join us for the 125th Anniversary of
St. Bon's Sports Day!

This Sports Day - Wednesday, June 5th (rain date June 6th), help us celebrate 125 years since the very first event on July 14, 1894! We would love to have many alumni come out and enjoy this special day. The second oldest alumni still living in NL (and brother to the oldest living alumni, Douglas Darcy), Jim Darcy, will cut the ribbon for opening ceremonies at 10:10 am. There are many ways you can become involved:
  • Play for the Alumni Team in the Alumni vs. Students Basketball Game.
  • Come watch the game and cheer on your fellow alumni!
  • Facilitate an activity station for our K-6 students.
  • Just come enjoy the festivities and see what's happening!
If you would like to get involved in any of the above ways, or for more information, contact:

Our Grade 2 classes enjoying a Fairy Tale Ball.

  • On May 12th, St. Bon's welcomed 9-time Grammy nominee, contemporary Christian music artist Matt Maher to deliver the 2019 Arrupe Lecture. Matt shared his personal stories and performed some of his songs, including his famous "Lord, I Need You". The crowd was wowed by his amazing performance and anecdotes.
  • Our Grade 2's celebrated the end of their Fairy Tale Literary Unit with a fun Fairy Tale Ball, complete with costumes, snacks, games and activities!
  • Some of our high school students were invited to take part in a short hike on Signal Hill with Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the honourable Catherine McKenna. They, along with students from Gonzaga and Holy Heart high schools had the opportunity to discuss climate change with the Minister.

  • Junior and Senior High Social Studies teacher Mr. Chris Peters has been sharing his talent for gardening with our younger students over at the greenhouse shared by St. Bon's and The Gathering Place. It's a great hands-on learning place for our students, and a source of fresh produce for The Gathering Place.
  • Our Grade 4's were honoured to be asked to sing the anthem at The Edge basketball game on May 16th.
  • Congratulations go to high school students Anna R. '21 and Matthew W. '20, who placed 3rd and 1st, respectively, in their categories at the Indoor Triathlon School Championships.
Fr. Cecil Critch with some of our talented singers at the Mothers' Day Mass.

Henley M '22 with his bronze medal at the Canada Wide Science Fair.

  • Thank you to The Basilica Cathedral and Fr. Cecil Critch, celebrant, for helping us celebrate another successful Mothers' Day Mass. Thank you to our own Fr. Schuck, concelebrant. A special thank you to our Parents' Auxiliary for hosting a wonderful reception for all of our mothers, grandmothers, friends and family after Mass.
  • Congratulations to Henley M. '22, who travelled to the University of Fredricton for the Canada Wide Science Fair, and even brought home some bronze hardware!
  • Congratulations to all students who ran in our recent Student Council Elections, campaigning with posters, badges, speeches and canvassing. Those elected are: Zoe BP '20 (President), Maggie M '20 (Vice President), Lauren Q '22  (Secretary), Trixie A '20 (Treasurer), Liza K '21 (Arts Rep), Camilla H '20 (Sports Rep), Isabella C '20 (Student Life Rep) and Veronica C  '24 and Lucy P '24 (Junior High Reps).

One of four Duke of Ed hiking groups from May 18th-20th on the East Coast Trail.

  • Our Annual Kindergarten Tie Ceremony was a great event to celebrate our Class of 2032, who just finished their KinderStart sessions. They can't wait to join us in September, and we can't wait to welcome them!
  • Congratulations to our Jr. High Ultimate Frisbee team, who placed third in the recent Jr. High Provincial tournament!
  • We have a large group participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Program through our school this year. From May 18-20, many Bronze and Silver participants completed their Adventurous Journey overnight hikes with the help of volunteer leaders. We have another group completing their Journey in June. Alumni Announcements
Congratulations to Peter Lewis '76, who completed the Ottawa 10K in 1:44:42, raising $11, 265 for the Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation. A multiple-time Tely 10 winner, Peter walked this one (with an IV in tow), as he is in Ottawa awaiting a heart transplant. His dedicated medical team was with him for support, as well as many family members from Newfoundland. His son, Liam Lewis '16, also participated in the race, finishing in 41:24. We keep Peter and his family in our prayers as he continues to wait for a new heart. Peter and his wife, Tracey Shave - a dedicated volunteer for our Duke of Ed program - moved to Ottawa in 2018 to be near the Ottawa Heart Institute. Liam currently attends College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. Their daughter, Sarah '19, is completing two years of pre-university study at the prestigious Pearson College in BC in the International Baccalaureate Program.
