Letter from the President
Melissa Harkcom
BABC President
Director, North America

Dear Friends of the BABC,

I moved here from Manchester, England 9 years ago in part to escape the rain, and in recent years with our California drought, had actually started to be excited to see rain... let's just say.... not so much now. I think we are all ready for some Springtime sunshine.

Anyway, as you squelch to work trying to avoid losing an eye from unnecessarily large brollies (that's umbrellas!), spare a thought for your BABC team. They have once again been working tirelessly to present a stunning array of flagship events for you.

On February 12th we co-hosted our Winter European Networking evening, which saw the BABC team up with our friends at the French American Chamber of Commerce and the German American Business Association. This event brought together over 160 international guests for an evening of drinks, food and networking at BABC Corporate member Docusign's beautiful offices in San Francisco.

Held on the same evening was our Young Professionals Happy Hour at BABC's Premier member Werqwise headquarters in the Financial District. The YP Committee were delighted to welcome new and returning attendees to the monthly networking event! We look forward to co-hosting next months Happy Hour on March 12th with Oxford University.

Last week on February 27th we held our 8th Annual "Funding, Exits and IPO's" event. This year we welcomed over 70 attendees to the Quadrus Center in Menlo Park for an enlightening and lively discussion of the current venture capital climate. We were delighted to welcome our expert panel of venture capitalists: Bill Reichart (Garage Technology Ventures), Jonathan Tower (Catapult), Mitchell Kertzman (Hummer Winblad Venture Partners), and our moderator, Richard Waters (The Financial Times). The event covered the current climate for venture investment, reviewed recent trends and made some predictions for 2019, a tall order given recent global market activity!

You can see some photos from the event here and read the full write up here

We are due to launch additional events in the upcoming weeks, so make sure to keep an eye on our events page and the alerts.

Last but not least, as you will see from our new and renewing member sections below, the BABC community remains as strong and vibrant as ever. Please don't hesitate to reach out to the BABC office team if you need anything.

Best,

Melissa Harkcom,
President, BABC Northern California

Dear friends and members of the BABC,

I know Brexit is still at the top of everyone's mind as we inch closer to 29 March. I recognise the uncertainty that is still surrounding the issue. Because of that, I'd like to continue to assure you that the Government is working to reach a deal that will benefit all of the UK.

While doing so, the Government is also taking steps to ensure the UK will continue to be a place to foster innovation and support the highest talent once we do leave the European Union. Many of these ideas were laid out in our Industrial Strategy, released in November 2017, with the goal of providing a framework for our future that will boost the economy and build on the country's strengths by embracing the opportunities for technological change.

Since the strategy's launch, we've committing millions of pounds to back business, create good jobs, and increase the earning power of people throughout the UK with investments in skills, industries and infrastructure . Just last month, for example, the Government announced the creation of a n ew post-graduate artificial intelligence (AI) drive to boost productivity and create high skilled jobs as part of the modern Industrial Strategy. The first of its kind: a nationwide programme of industry-funded AI Masters courses coupled with work-based placements.

This new package is supported by industry funding and up to $144 million (£110 million) in government investment and will offer:
  • Up to 200 new AI Masters places at UK universities funded by companies such as DeepMind, QuantumBlack, Cisco and BAE Systems.
  • 1,000 students will have the opportunity to enhance their skills with new PhDs at 16 dedicated UK Research and Innovation AI Centres for Doctoral Training (CDTs), located across the country
  • Up to 5 AI research Fellowships, created in collaboration with The Alan Turing Institute to both attract and retain the best research talent from around the world.
The announcement comes as new figures prepared for Tech Nation reveal that inward investment into the UK's rapidly growing AI sector leapt by 17% last year, cementing the UK's place as the top tech investment destination in Europe.

Top-50 Accounting Firm Wins Award for the Fourth Consecutive Year

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - BPM, one of the 50 largest public accounting and advisory firms in the country, announced today it received Inavero's 2018 "Best of Accounting™ Award." This is the fourth consecutive year BPM has been recognized for providing exemplary client service.

"BPM winning this award four years in a row reflects our commitment to our clients," said Jim Wallace, BPM CEO. "I'm proud of our team, and I have no doubt we will continue to exceed client satisfaction averages as we continue to grow."

Brexit: It's happening next month. Currently.

Is there anything new that can be said about Brexit? January was dominated by more turmoil on the UK's Withdrawal from the EU with the Prime Minister's Withdrawal Agreement and a number of amendments that would have re-shaped the next steps in the process being voted down in the House of Commons.

In response, BAB consulted with members on the release of two updated statements, firstly calling for the UK Government to work with all parties in light of the Withdrawal Agreement being voted down and secondly on the Prime Minister's Updated Statement to Parliament on Brexit. The message is clear and unequivocal: take a 'No-Deal' exit scenario off the table and provide a transition period so business can adjust. To do this, all sides in Parliament need to do something they should have done at the start: work together. BAB CEO, Duncan Edwards reiterated this point on the BBC's 'Talking Business'

On Thursday February 7th, BABC Business Associate Interns Corey Hastings and Kirsty Cannon were invited to "International Night" at Saint Mary's College by David Jaeger of IMG College. This newly formed celebration has been created in order to recognize the number of international students currently on the SMC Basketball Roster; including from Australia, New Zealand, England, Latvia and Estonia.

Representatives from the Australian American Chamber of Commerce and the New Zealand Consulate as well as Corey and Kirsty were invited on-court during a time-out and were introduced to the crowd. As well as receiving an International Night Program and a Gaels cap!

A huge thanks to Dawn Lillington at the Australian Consulate for making the introduction, look forward to seeing the "International Night" at Saint Mary's College grow!  The game itself was a close contest but the Gaels finished strong winning 78-66. It was great to experience a home win. Go GAELS!
