It is hard to believe that it is already December which also marks my last month as President of the Florida Art Education Association. The time has flown by and it has truly been an honor to serve our FAEA members for the last two years. As I reflect on my time as President, I am in awe of the continued support and commitment to arts education in Florida. I am thankful for our members and appreciate all the hard work and commitment to remain a strong and flourishing organization. We are fortunate to have such a magnificent organization. Thank you for all you do!
On behalf of FAEA, it is my great pleasure to thank the outgoing board for their dedication and the phenomenal job accomplished during the two-year term. I am sure as members you share my gratitude for their extraordinary work and leadership skills. As the end of the board term approaches, we wish the outgoing board the very best in future endeavors and look forward to their ongoing involvement in FAEA. Be sure to check out the January Fresh Paint when the incoming board members will be introduced.
As we approach the end of the calendar year, now is the time to plan for upcoming opportunities to showcase student artwork. The Florida Art Education Association invites all art educators to participate in Youth Art Month! Get involved in Youth Art Month by submitting a student design for
Florida’s Youth Art Month Flag competition
. The theme for this year is "Building Community through Art". Flag designs should communicate an aspect of Florida’s culture, history and/or geography. The use of the YAM logo is encouraged and the words Building Community through Art should also be included. One student flag design per student can be electronically submitted to FAEA’s website by January 17, 2018. The winning design will be exhibited along with other state YAM flags in Seattle at the NAEA Conference in March.
Another opportunity is the
2018 K-12 Student Art Assessment and Virtual Exhibition
. Submissions are currently being accepted through March 5, 2018. You don’t want your students to miss the opportunity to be a part of this digital exhibition. The Florida Art Education Association is pleased to provide the K-12 Student Art Assessment and Virtual Exhibition to our membership to serve as a statewide assessment for visual art and promote the achievements of students enrolled in visual art classes throughout Florida. Sargent Art will generously sponsor prizes. Check out the prize structure for 2018 and be sure to get your submissions in before the deadline.

The Florida Art Education Association will begin the new year with an annual meeting to conduct the current business of the association. As part of the board meeting, we will discuss FAEA’s Strategic Plan and our progress with the key components: Organizational Vibrancy, Research and Knowledge, Learning, Community, and Advocacy. The new board, under the leadership of President Lark Keeler, will also analyze and review the conference survey results as we begin conference planning for the 66th Annual FAEA Conference, October 18-21, 2018 in St. Petersburg, Florida. The theme for next year's conference is "Vintage Vogue: Time to Shine!"
Plan to attend the National Art Education Association Convention March 22-24 in Seattle, Washington. Registration is now open at
https://www.naea18.org/
. Be a part of the NAEA annual conference and enjoy three days of sessions, workshops, tours, and events. We hope to see Florida well represented and will plan our annual group photograph once the schedule is released.
Most of us are currently in the midst of preparing for the winter break while completing projects that are due early January. We certainly have our hands full and deserve the upcoming time off. On behalf of The Florida Art Education, we hope you have a wonderful winter break and enjoy the holiday season. Relish the time with your family and friends and we look forward to an outstanding 2018!
