What's New in Open Choice

Season's Greetings from our CREC family to yours. As we get ready to bundle up and enjoy the winter solstice and holiday, we are sending you our w armest thoughts and best wishes for a wonderful holiday and a very happy new year.

As we think about 2018, I am appreciative of our partnership to bring about change in our equity and inclusion work. Through our conversations & professional learning experiences, I am constantly reminded of the importance of listening to the stories and hearing the voices of our students and families
. I encourage you to also share your stories with students and families to create a stronger relationship. Engaging in this work is often not easy, but it is rewarding when you are able to connect at a deeper, personal level. Share your stories of holiday traditions, memories, and experiences.

Next month is a Celebration of World Religions. Here are a few ideas to help your school recognize this celebration:
  • Use the visual and musical arts, as well as literature, to promote world religions
  • Involve parents as cultural guest speakers
  • Have a student reading or announcement by someone famous from the celebration group of the month

Warm Regards,
Debra M. Borrero

Dine and Discuss

Ellington & Farmington educators, along with the Open Choice Elementary Resource Specialist, discussed best practices for family engagement strategies at two Dine & Discuss sessions. Repeated connections & strong relationships are the keys to increasing family participation. Creative approaches shared included home visits with CREC & school-based staff, student-run assemblies first thing in the morning, & student-led parent conferences, and making that first parent call about positive reflections. Outcomes include increased attendance & much higher parental participation in conferences & at family events.

TRANSPORTATION TIDBITS
Transportation Tidbits

BUS EVACUATION DRILLS REMINDER - Under the CT School Transportation Law (Sec. 14-276c-16), all students must be instructed in safe riding practices & participate in emergency evacuation drills at least twice per school year. Note that "all students" includes walkers and students with disabilities. The school administration is responsible for ensuring that this requirement is met.

CASA UPDATE

The Choice After School Academy (CASA) has completed 10 weeks of homework assistance, skills building and credit recovery support for 67 students. In order to maintain the high quality of service and support, Open Choice will be hiring two more Assistant Instructors.

RESOURCE SPECIALIST'S RAMBLINGS

Responding to district needs, a " Boys to Men's Group" has been implemented at Timothy Edwards Middle School in South Windsor. Group participants include both Open Choice and suburban male students in eighth grade. The group meets every Wednesday at 10 a.m. and is receiving rave reviews from the student participants. Each of the group's six sessions examine the concepts contained in the teacher, parent, and mentor workbook titled, Empowering African-American Males by Mychal Wynn. During this group, students are asked to create and discuss their mission and vision statements as males in our society, examine cultural differences and similarities and discuss strategies for academic, behavioral and social success.

For more information on this group, please contact Michael Livingston at (860) 461-5759 or  [email protected], or co-facilitator Tara Kozik, Timothy Edwards School social worker, at [email protected].

Open Choice Professional Development
P ROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT POSSIBILITIES
The Open Choice Leadership Institute held on December 6 included discussion of the N word; a parent panel; activities reflecting on privilege and on structural racism in education, and an equity school self-assessment.

Parent panelists Erwin Hurst and Joanna Bremmer, both former Open Choice (then Project Concern) students, and parent Lorenzo Milledge all asked for a greater understanding of the challenges Hartford youth experience within suburban school districts. Erwin described the challenge of living in the city while attending a suburban school. "I'd arrive home from school and kids would say, 'you think you're better than us because you attend school in Farmington?'" They noted that teachers who recognize Hartford youth's struggles and make efforts to connect with them go a long way toward establishing the trust and feeling of belonging that is so vital to student success.

Leadership Institute participants also appreciated the small group activities. The Privilege 4 Sale session helped participants understand the overlapping experiences of identity that influence our lives. Each group received a different amount of "money" to purchase their privileges, clearly and quickly driving home the point that access to resources greatly impacts outcomes.

For the second group activity, educators divided into three groups and brainstormed examples of racial inequities within the school system at either the individual, institutional, or systemic level. Each group performed a skit demonstrating one example of each level of inequity. Discussion followed about how the individual, institutional and systemic inequities are occurring simultaneously, and how easy it is to ignore or minimize, within a fast-paced, demanding school environment, these occurrences and their impact on students of color.

Participants will revisit their examples of levels of racial inequity during the final Leadership Institute session and develop strategies to address those challenges. They also will deliberate further on the equity school self-assessment they started, concentrating next time on developing an action plan or a recommended action idea to take back to their school.

Some teachers noted in their evaluations an appreciation for the activities, which some plan to use with teams in their schools.Others expressed a commitment to reflecting further on the impact of their actions on Hartford students, recognizing the vital role that they as educators play in all children's lives. One educator summarized a growing realization in the room -- the need to become more comfortable with accepting non-closure; it's an ongoing journey.
