Maker Space Project Makes a Difference
Seventh grader
Lily Bracken has always loved animals. Her family has two rescue dogs, and some day, she would like to run her own animal shelter. She wants to be a veterinarian when she is older, specifically to work with animal prosthetics. When Lily signed up for a Maker Space elective this semester, she had no idea how she would soon combine her love to create with her passion for animals.
Students in
Evelyn Tan’s Maker Space elective are charged with the task of researching and developing a product. Students first submit a proposal, including an estimate of the time that will be needed to complete the project. "Lily's project was unique, and she was determined to focus on helping animals in need," said Tan.
For her project, Bracken wanted to create a wheelchair for a disabled dog. Libby is a Chihuahua that was attacked by another dog when she was a puppy. Both of her legs were broken and had to be amputated. Libby has since been adopted, and lives in Sherman. While she was able to get around by “scooting,” she often suffered from rug burn. “She had to hop like a kangaroo, and she got tired easily,” said Bracken.
Bracken admits that a fair amount of trial and error was necessary for the project. She began by building a prototype with PVC pipe. She researched and found a 3D printing template online, and used those plans as a starting point for her own design. She used Lakehill's 3D printer to fabricate the wheelchair, tweaking the design as she assembled the final product.
A vet is working with Libby to help her get used to her new mobility. “She really likes being up off of the ground where she can see,” said Bracken. “I think she is really grateful.” The wheelchair Bracken made for Libby was purple. “She really needed something to match her wardrobe,” said Bracken. “She likes to wear dog clothes and has a whole wall of jackets.”
Bracken wants to continue by making wheelchairs for other disabled dogs. She is contemplating starting a Go Fund Me page so that she can purchase her own 3D printer and adapt her design to make back-leg wheelchairs as well.
Bracken has also done considerable research on shelters and the needs of disabled animals. “Many people don’t want to take the responsibility for a disabled animal,” says Bracken. “Having a wheelchair could help animals in the shelters get adopted.”
What would Bracken say to other young people who want to try to make a difference? “Just go for it. It’s ok to mess up—in the end, you could make someone really happy.”

A Home for the Holidays
For more than 40 years, Lakehill has been opening its doors to elderly members of the Dallas community for the much beloved tradition of the Holiday Luncheon.
Held this year on December 14, Lakehill hosted more than 150 seniors citizens from all over the Dallas. The entire Upper School assisted in welcoming the seniors to the school. Each grade has progressively more complex responsibilities.
The freshmen interacted with the seniors after eating lunch, and the sophomores created picture frames to hold each guest's picture with Santa. The juniors, dressed as reindeer and elves, rode the buses to pick up the guests and escorted them around the school. The senior class, along with their parents, hosted the luncheon feeding over 700 people throughout the day. While the senior citizens were eating, they were joined by Lower and Middle school students and entertained by the kindergarten class with the heartwarming rendition of “I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.”
As each of the senior guests left, they were given a poinsettia, their framed picture with Santa, and a stocking filled with toiletries and other small gifts made by Lower and Middle School Community Connections Club members.
Overall, the luncheon was a great success and enabled seniors from all over Dallas to enjoy a festive meal and make great memories.
Having been increasingly involved in the Holiday Luncheon for eight years, as a senior this year, the tradition became even more meaningful to me. It will be bittersweet next year when it is no longer a part of my holiday activities.

Juniors Host Reindeer Games for Lower School Students
Lakehill's junior class carried on a long-standing tradition on December 14, with the school's annual Holiday Parade and Reindeer Games.
Since 1976, when it was known as the Junior Parade, the junior class stages this event for the benefit of the Lower School students. Children lined the atrium promenade in anticipation of the dancing reindeer, joyful elves, and Santa (
Gaige McKnight) and Mrs. Claus (
Loveth Heard). After the parade, juniors led the Lower School students into the gym for a variety of activities and an afternoon of holiday fun.

Lower School Presents Winter Program
The Lower School Winter Program, held in Lakehill's Wyly Auditorium on December 13, featured a variety of musical performances by each grade in kindergarten through fourth grade.
The program culminated with the annual Parade of Gifts. The giving of toys to children in need is a Lakehill tradition that is over 30 years old. Thanks to the generosity of the Lakehill community, more than 100 gifts were donated to Brother Bill's Helping Hand, Hope Supply Company, and Voice of Hope, to brighten the holidays for the children they serve.

Karate Teaches More than Kicks

Max Crist recently earned their red belts in karate. Both students have been studying at Pro Martial Arts for three years. The red belt is the tenth level of advancement, just two away from black belt. Both students plan to continue continue their studies to advance to black belt, which could take a year or more.
"It's a lot of fun and the people are really cool," said Poore. "It's good physical exercise, but also mentally challenging. It's also useful to know self defense."
Crist enjoys the consistency, and the ability to build on skills learned. "In addition to the martial arts skills, I appreciate also focusing on the themes of health, responsibility, and generosity." Crist recommends martial arts to anyone looking to try something new. "Everyone should learn to defend themselves, but, most of all, it's just fun!"

Helping The Homeless
Girl Scout Troop 5453, which includes Lakehill students

Landry Poore, recently completed a special project for the SoupMobile which is dedicated to its annual tradition of providing gifts to those experiencing homelessness in Dallas. The girls filled 30 shoe boxes with food, toiletries, McDonald’s gift cards, socks, hats, and gloves. They included a hand-made holiday card and wrapped each shoe box in festive paper to brighten the holidays for those in need.

Ringing in the Holidays
Mr. Perry and Ms. Frullo took a break on Monday to ring in a little cheer for the holidays and to help those less fortunate. Several Lakehill teachers, students, and their families rang the bell for the Salvation Army as well.
Celebrating more than 125 years, the Salvation Army's traditional red kettle is an integral part of the holiday scene, with millions of dollars donated each year to aid needy families, seniors, and the homeless, in keeping with the spirit of the season. Thanks to Irwin Thompson and

Senior Spotlight
National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates
In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:
NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Elizabeth Motes
Elizabeth Motes has attended Lakehill since third grade. She has had many years to participate in Lakehill activities, including Varsity Tennis, musical theater, drama, Pan American Student Forum (PASF), Ambassadors, Sisteens, and National Honor Society (NHS). Along with playing tennis at Lakehill, Elizabeth takes lessons outside of school.
She has received many honors, such as the Citizenship Award and the Headmaster's Honor and High Honor Roll. Her favorite class is English Literature because she loves to read and write. Her favorite Lakehill memories are from the New York Performing Arts Trip because she enjoyed seeing several musicals and loved hanging out with her friends.
Elizabeth plans to major in education and has applied to Southwestern University, Sarah Lawrence College, Trinity University, St. Lawrence University, Austin College, Rhodes College, and Knox College. Elizabeth will miss Lakehill, its small community, and all her friends.
“Work hard and you can get to the place you want to be,” is just one of Elizabeth Motes’s suggestions for young Warriors. She also believes that you should “always do your best because, even if you don’t meet your exact goals, it’s better to have tried than to just give up and not do anything at all.”

Sports Snippets
Middle School Soccer
The Middle School Soccer team tied Trinity Christian Cedar Hill 5-5 on December 14. Lakehill scored right away on a goal from
Max Byrd with an assist from
Ellis Meyer. TCA scored two more goals to take the lead 2-1, but
Madeline Reister scored on an assist from
Bella Pumpelly to tie the game at two right before the half. TCA scored three goals in a row to make it 5-2. Lakehill finished well on goals from Byrd, Reister, and
Brayden Neill to tie the game. The Warriors play at Parish on January 9, at 4:30 p.m.
Varsity Soccer
The Varsity Soccer team lost 3-1 to Trinity Christian Cedar Hill on December 14. Lakehill fell behind early on a TCA corner kick. TCA scored a two more times on long passes that resulted in break away goals.
Justin Reed led the defense;
Luka Varnes was strong in the midfield; and
Ben Gillman gave a solid performance on offense.
Cade Armstrong scored a late goal on a corner kick late to end the game 3-1 TCA.
The Warriors are at home on January 4, against Plano Corem Deo at 6:00 p.m.

Varsity Boys Basketball
The Varsity Boys Basketball team took on McKinney Cornerstone on the road on December 14. The Warriors prevailed, 49-40, led by sophomore
Nathan Lewis
, who had 16 points and 12 rebounds. Lewis also went three for three from the three-point range. Sophomore
Ryan Henry
had a stellar defensive performance with six steals and a pair of blocks. Henry also pulled down 11 rebounds and added seven assists to his stuffed stat-sheet. Senior
Luke Jerome
anchored the post with a solid 10-point performance. The Warriors are off until they play in the First Baptist Academy Holiday Tournament, December 27-29.
Varsity Girls Basketball
The Varsity Girls Basketball season closed out December with a home victory and a road loss against Arlington Newman and McKinney Cornerstone, respectively.
The Lady Warriors defeated Arlington Newman on December 13, 35–15. Lakehill was led in scoring by
Krista Carlson with 11 points and
Hayden Yoss with 10.
Ryan Douglas had nine rebounds.
Brook'Lynn Williams continues to be a spark off the bench with her aggressive defensive play and added six points.
On December 14, the Lady Warriors were defeated, 34 - 28, by McKinney Cornerstone. Lakehill was led in scoring by Carlson with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Alanna Stern had 11 points and nine rebounds.
Lynley Waggoner contributed nine rebounds.
The Lady Warriors begin district play on January 7, at Rockwall Heritage Christian.
Middle School Boys Basketball (IAA)
The Middle School Boys Basketball league team defeated an outstanding DaSCHE team, 40-30, on December 13.
Jon Paul Maney
paced the Warriors with 15 points.
Arthur Cirillo
scored eight points, while
Noah Kohn
and
Hayden Bauer
each added six. The team finished the first half of the season undefeated, with an 11-0 record and two tournament championships. They are currently 3-0 in league play and in first place.
The Middle School Boys Basketball Blue team lost to Poetry Christian, 30-14, on December 14.
Jack Wildham
led the Warriors with eight points, and
Yussef Zidan
had six. "The seventh graders are learning every day," said Coach Yttredahl. "They work hard and never quit."
Middle School Girls Basketball
On December 13, the Middle School Girls (IAA) Basketball team
defeated DasCHE, 25-22.
Taylor Lewis
scored a game high 19 points.
Blake Bied, Taylor Allen
and
Victoria Bell
scored two points each. The team has a 7-0 record going into the holiday break.
On December 14, the Blue Team lost to Poetry Christian, 13-16, in a hard-fought game.
Sarah Ganson
scored five points and
Kate Marshall
and
Addie Ashford
scored four points each.
