Dear Panther Parents,
I don't know about you guys, but I am about done with this rain. UGH! I am too much of an outdoors girl to be stuck indoors this much...and I think our kiddos are feeling the same way. Hopefully, they will be able to get outside and burn some energy over the 3-day weekend.
I want to thank all the parents who joined us on Wednesday night for the PTO Internet Safety Night. A special thanks goes out to Officer Lee and our amazing PTO for putting this together for our community. As always, it was a big success.
8th grade students will receive an SSI STAAR Brochure next week. Please be on the lookout for that.
Red Ribbon Week will be here before we know it. (Oct. 29-Nov. 2) Please look below for the daily dress-up agenda.
- Monday-Put Drugs to Rest and wear your pjs
- Tuesday-Drugs are No Laughing Matter, but Memes Are, dress as your favorite meme
- Wednesday-Scare Off Drugs, wear your costume
- Thursday-Take a Stand Against Drugs with a Friend and dress like twins
- Red Out Friday! Wear Red Today
As part of Red Ribbon Week, we will have our 3rd Annual "Scare Off Drugs" day on October 31st. This is a big hit and students and teachers love dressing in fun costumes to celebrate the theme of living drug-free. Please follow the below guidelines for costumes. Students will be asked to change if they are not in compliance. Thank you in advance for helping with this effort.
- No clowns
- No Masks covering the face
- Must still be in dress code
- No blood or gore as part of the costume
- No weapons of ANY type
- Please make sure the costume is in good taste; if you are questioning that, it is probably not going to be acceptable. ☺
It was suggested by a parent that maybe I could add a TechTip of the week to our newsletter. I LOVE the idea and will give this a shot (though it may only occur once a month...we shall see how techie I can become
☺
).
TechTip of the Month: This is a resource for social media news and updates and has great tips for keeping our students safe and responsible with social media. It also has tips/suggestions on movies to watch for certain age groups.
Check it out:
Happy (yet rainy) Friday,
Darla

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR PTO BOARD
Karen Meyer:
Co-chair of Spirit-wear
I volunteer because I like to be involved and get to know other students and parents through volunteering.
Kids:
Stephen 10th grade at Boyd and
Katelyn 7th grade at Evans
I have 2 part time jobs - working at the Apex Centre and as an usher during the Frisco Rough Riders baseball season.
My husband is Chris. He's a software engineer/program manager for HPE.
Interesting facts about me:
I was born and raised in Pennsylvania I but have lived in Texas since 1993.
I like to go hiking/outdoors (whenever I am not recovering from foot surgeries!)
I helped develop an interactive disability awareness program for students at Wolford elementary about 6 years ago. My son has an autism diagnosis and my daughter has asthma and food allergies so they are the ones who inspired me to help start that program.
I love baseball and follow both the Texas Rangers and the Seattle Mariners. My nephew is a pitcher in the minor leagues for the Seattle Mariners organization.
Between working part time for the Frisco Roughriders and watching my nephew's baseball games (Arkansas Travelers), I have attended around 50 baseball games in 2018!

Healthy Choices
Who would have thought that you could fight disease...with a fork? Many people don't know it, but one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself from disease is to eat a healthy diet. What you eat - and how much you eat - can help reduce your risk of cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. As a matter of fact, if you are one of the many Americans who do not smoke, eating well - along with being active and maintaining a healthy weight - is your best defense against disease. So try these simple tips:
~Eat at least 5 servings of veggies and fruit each day
~Choose whole grains over processed grains & sugars
~Choose healthier fats (like olive oil and canola oil)
~Limit your intake of saturated fats & cholesterol found in meats &
dairy products.
These easy changes can help you eat your way to a healthier you!

Fourteen-year-old Zach Harriman can feel the changes. The sharpening of his senses. The incredible strength. The speed, as though he can text message himself across miles. The confidence and the strange need to patrol Central Park at night. His dad had been a hero, a savior to America and a confidante of the president. Then he died, and the changes began in Zach. What Zach never knew was that his father was no ordinary man-he was a superhero, battling the world's evil. This is a battle that has been waged for generations and that knows no boundaries.
And now it's Zach's turn to take on the fight. It's Zach's turn to become a hero.

BROWN BAG LEARNING SERIES 18-19 |
A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the uniform classroom response to any incident. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by all McKinney ISD schools and District Administration and staff. Historically, schools have taken this scenario-based approach to respond to hazards and threats. Each McKinney ISD classroom is furnished with the Standard Response Protocol poster that provides teachers with readily accessible response procedures and provides information during a crisis event. The attached handout explains Standard Response Protocol that is taught to students, faculty and staff.
Please click the link below to view the Standard Response Protocol parent handout.

Due to a variety of safety concerns related to food allergies and campus safety and security,
McKinney ISD will no longer allow students to utilize food delivery services at school. This includes services such as Uber Eats, Doordash and direct restaurant delivery. However, parents/guardians will still be permitted to drop food off for their children.
This rule does not apply to deliveries organized by McKinney ISD faculty or a teacher serving as a sponsor of a student organization. We appreciate your cooperation in our efforts to create a safe and secure environment for students.

We are so lucky to have so many wonderful volunteers who make it possible for us to make our school the very best it can be! Please remember that if you are a returning volunteer, or maybe a first time MISD volunteer, that you must go online to fill out a Volunteer Application and be approved before you can serve in any capacity where you will have contact with students. Sometimes this takes a couple of weeks, so please do it as soon as possible! We need you!!!
Click HERE to go directly to the link.
Thank you so very much! We look forward to having you on our campus!
Note:
Volunteer applications may take up to two weeks to be processed.
If after two weeks you have not been contacted regarding your volunteer status, please contact MISD Human Resources at 469-302-4117. DO NOT contact staff members at schools regarding your volunteer application. Your application is a confidential matter.
Once you are approved, you will be able to volunteer in the district throughout the school year.
