Arbor Day Foundation Honors College of Southern Idaho with 2018 Tree Campus USA® Recognition
|

Lincoln, Neb. March, 4, 2019
- College of Southern Idaho was honored with 2018 Tree Campus USA® recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management.
"Tree Campuses and their students set examples for not only their student bodies but the surrounding communities showcasing how trees create a healthier environment," said Dan Lambe, president of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Because of your school's participation air will be purer, water cleaner and your students and faculty will be surrounded by the shade and beauty the trees provide."
The Tree Campus USA program honors colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. College of Southern Idaho achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA's five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project. Currently there are 364 campuses across the United States with this recognition.
The Arbor Day Foundation has helped campuses throughout the country plant thousands of trees, and Tree Campus USA colleges and universities invested more than $51 million in campus forest management last year. More information about the program is available at arborday.org/TreeCampusUSA.

Willsey's, Geology Underfoot in Southern Idaho book was selected for excellence in scholarship and presentation, significance of contribution to the field, and value as an important treatment of the subject.

(OAT) list. This prestigious list reflects the best in scholarly titles reviewed by Choice during the previous calendar year. This year's complete list features 455 books and digital resources from 141 publishers.

The Faculty Staff Connections Committee is collecting used prescription eyeglasses, lenses and hearing aids in memory of CSI employee and Lions Club member, Jennifer Patterson.
Lions Club donation boxes are located in every building on campus through Friday, April 12. Please ask friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to donate too.
The donations that we collect will help improve the quality of life for children and adults living in low and middle-income communities around the world. Many will experience corrected vision and hearing for the first time, enabling them to lead productive working lives, support their families, attend school and advance their education.

The CSI Piano Celebration series will present The Ezola/Olson Duo
in an Evening of Piano Duos at

A comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games, She Kills Monsters tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly's Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly's refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90s pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

The CSI Jazz Ensemble and CSI Madrigals are teaming up to present their annual Spring Jazz Collaboration 10.0 to be held on Thursday, March 14 at 7:30 PM in the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium. Admission is free, but donations to the CSI Music Department Scholarship Fund are always appreciated.
This tenth year of collaboration includes fresh takes on classics like "Sing, Sing, Sing," "Moonlight over Vermont," "Java Jive," and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." The Mads will also honor their a cappella roots with stunning jazz arrangements of "When She Loved Me" as performed by Idea of North and the Stevie Wonder funk classic "I Wish." The Jazz Ensemble will be recreating the Woody Herman band's classic arrangement of "Things Ain't What They Used to Be," and Madrigals director Serena Jenkins Clark will also solo with the jazz ensemble.

FINALISTS NAMED IN UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO PRESIDENT SEARCH
Five finalists have been named from a list of over 50 candidates who applied to become the 19th president of the University of Idaho.
The finalists were selected after nine semifinalists were interviewed late last week by the U of I President Search Screening Committee.
Listed in alphabetical order, the University of Idaho President finalists are:
Christopher Callahan is the Founding Dean of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. He also serves as University Vice-Provost and as Chief Executive Officer of Arizona Public Broadcasting System. The College is among the top ranked schools of journalism in the country and the University is routinely recognized for its entrepreneurship and innovation. U.S. News & World Report recently named ASU #1 in the U.S. for innovation.
Diane Z. Chase currently serves as the Executive Vice President and Provost of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where she is responsible for a budget of $448 million, 1,121 faculty, and serves 30,457 students. During her tenure, UNLV was recently elevated by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education from R2 to an R1 university.
Scott Green is an alumnus of the University of Idaho and a fourth-generation Idahoan. He currently serves as the Global Chief Operating and Financial Officer of Hogan Lovells, a highly ranked international law firm with over 45 offices globally and over $2 billion in total revenue. The firm was recently recognized as the 2nd most innovative law firm in North America and in Europe by Financial Times.
Elizabeth Spiller is Dean of the College of Letters and Science at the University of California, Davis. The College is home to more than 900 full-time faculty and serves 14,300 undergraduate majors and 1,600 graduate students. It is the largest College at UC Davis and the University of California System. UC Davis is one of 62 members of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU).
Paul Tikalsky is Dean of the College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology at Oklahoma State University. Under his leadership, the College recently raised $110 million from external donors, corporations, and foundations and has advanced 23 positions in U.S. News & World Report's college rankings. OSU is a land-grant university recognized for being a leader in research impacting health, engineering and the world.
Arrangements are underway for the finalists to visit the University of Idaho campus in Moscow and the U of I Boise Center next week.
Open forums are planned for students, faculty, staff and the public to meet and hear from the finalists. There will also be an online portal established to provide feedback about the candidates.

Five finalists have been picked from a list of over 60 candidates vying to become Boise State University's seventh president.
The finalists were selected after 12 semifinalists were interviewed last week by the Boise State President Search Screening Committee.
Listed in alphabetical order, the Boise State President finalists are:
Susan E. Borrego
is the Chancellor of the University of Michigan-Flint and is a nationally-renowned leader and advocate for student success. Under Dr. Borrego's leadership the university footprint grew by 25 percent including breaking ground on a 65,000 square foot addition to the science facilities; established a School of Nursing, and raised over $57 million dollars. New academic partnerships were created in Spain, and 15 new innovative academic programs were created including green chemistry and physician's assistant programs.
Darren Dawson
is the Dean of the College of Engineering at Kansas State University, a Carnegie-classified R1 institution. As Dean, Dr. Dawson manages a College of 160 faculty, 3,600 undergraduate students, 440 graduate students and 75 members of the professional staff, with annual research expenditures over $28 million. Dawson's research activities led to eight books, more than 500 publications and more than 12,000 citations. At K-State, Dr. Dawson worked with various departments to develop a strategic research emphasis-area plan leading to the hiring of additional faculty, catalyzing research, and providing additional educational support for graduate and undergraduate students.
Andrew Marcus
is a Professor of Geography and the former Dean of the College Arts and Sciences at the University of Oregon, a position he held from 2013 to December 2018. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college at the University, and is the academic home to more than 60 percent of the student body. Dr. Marcus was responsible for an operating budget of over $150 million, 500 tenure-track faculty, 250 non-tenure-track faculty, and 200 staff. During his 15 year tenure at the University, Dr. Marcus has served as faculty member, university senate president, department head, associate dean, and dean. The University of Oregon is a Carnegie-classified R1 university and a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), an organization of 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada.
Edward Seidel
is the Vice President for Economic Development and Innovation (VPEDI) for the University of Illinois System, with universities in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago, and Springfield. The System's three universities offer over 500 academic programs to more than 85,000 students. As VPEDI, Dr. Seidel works closely with the president of the University of Illinois System, university chancellors and leadership, government officials, business leaders, and universities across the state to engage potential public and private partnerships to strengthen the links between higher education, research, and business to drive innovation and stimulate economic development across the state of Illinois.
Marlene Tromp
is the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor at the University of California, Santa Cruz, a Carnegie-Classified R1 University with approximately 20,000 students, an operating budget of over $700 million, and research expenditures in excess of $120 million. Dr. Tromp is responsible for providing leadership for all academic and administrative components of UCSC, including curriculum, finance, operations, and facilities. UCSC is a Hispanic Serving Institution and ranked among the top 70 national universities in the country. Prior to her arrival at UC Santa Cruz, Dr. Tromp served in various administrative roles at Arizona State University, ranked as the most innovative school in the nation for the fourth consecutive year by U.S. News and World Report.

South Central Public Health District Calls for "Health Heroes" Nominations
SOUTH CENTRAL IDAHO
- Do you know someone who goes above and beyond to make your community healthier? Now is your chance to recognize them!
South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) is now accepting nominations for "Health Heroes 2019". Health Heroesare individuals, groups, and businesses that have made a big difference in the health of residents in south central Idaho.
"These are regular people who go out of their way to help our community. Like the teen on your street who got involved in local government to bring us healthier laws. Or, the P.E. teacher who is using personal time to organize field days for the whole community," said Pam Jones, Chair of the SCPHD Health Heroes committee. "We call these people Health Heroes because they do so much for our community. This is a chance to recognize their hard work."
You can nominate a group or person for one of the four nomination categories: youth, adult, corporate, and behavioral health.
The nomination form is available online at

The nomination form must include a brief description explaining why the nominee deserves the Health Heroes Award.
Examples of qualifying activities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Promoting a healthy lifestyle through activities at schools, churches, and places of work,
- Activities that help reduce suicides,
- Promoting physical activity,
- Activities that reduce obesity,
- Preparing a community for a disaster,
- Decreasing workplace injuries,
- Promoting policies that led to healthy outcomes.
Nominations are due by Monday, April 1st. Health Hero award winners will be honored on May 15th, in a short ceremony that is open to the public.

The Alzheimer's Association, Greater Idaho Chapter presents, Legal and Financial Planning for the Golden Years. This is a no cost program offered to the entire community. Please welcome David Wilson, JD.
David is a partner with Ahrens DeAngeli Law Group. David is a board-certified elder law attorney with the National Elder Law Foundation (one of only five board-certified elder law attorneys in the state of Idaho). David graduated cum laude from Arizona State University's College of Law and clerked for the Honorable Daniel Barker of the Arizona Court of Appeals before completing his LL.M. in taxation at New York University.
David practiced in estate planning in Arizona before moving to Boise. David's practice centers on asset protection and on helping seniors navigate the financial maze that is long term care. David is a VA-Certified Attorney and also helps veterans navigate the benefits provided by the Veteran's Administration. He will also discuss guardianship and power of attorney and other hot topics that are asked to be addressed.
This program is provided at no cost to the community as a service of The Alzheimer's Association, Greater Idaho Chapter.

This event is open to contractors, small business owners, professional technical educators, city workers or anyone interested in creating a safer and/or more productive workplace or improving their business skills. With over 50 classes, demonstrations, and workshops offered, attendees have plenty of options to choose from to best suit their needs. Examples of training topics include Natural Gas Emergency & Pipeline Safety, Why Wellness is Important to Health & Safety, Intro to the Seven Habits, Worker's Comp. Compliance, How to Create a Safety Culture, OSHA 10 (General Industry), Rigging Application and Inspection, Insurance 101, Communication Techniques to Effect Change, CPR/First Aid/AED and many more.
Safety and Business Fest of the Great Northwest - Southern Idaho is proudly hosted by CSI Workforce Development and Training at their Health Sciences and Human Services Building. The dates for this year's event are

It's time for the annual
P.E.O.* Hanging Flower Basket Sale. Kathy Stover, CSI retiree, moved to Boise and passed her duties onto Alice Anderson, another CSI retiree and
PEO member. I have been helping her since she retired.
*P.E.O. is a Philanthropic Educational Organization that celebrates the advancement of women, supports women's higher education through scholarships, grants, awards and loans to help women achieve their highest educational aspirations. Twin Falls local Chapter D of P.E.O. sponsors this annual flower sale and donates all of the profits from the sales to these higher education projects. P.E.O. Chapter D appreciates your support in our annual fundraiser! Thank you!
There are at least five different PEO chapters in Twin Falls and several more around the Magic Valley area. Many of the members are educators, but women from nearly every profession and walk of life all over the world belong.
Baskets are $25.00 each (23.58 + 1.42 tax) The baskets are huge and they last all summer long!
Baskets varieties this year include:
