A Wonderful Afternoon for the Ladies of MCS
Over 100 blessed, beautiful, and bright women celebrated their identity in Christ at this year's Ladies Luncheon, including many MCS Grandmothers and Alumni. Thank you to Laurie Kelly for sharing her heart with us and to Meesh Pierce for her inspiring words about the miracles of God's provision that have propelled the MCS remodel into high gear this year.

School Picture Retakes - Wednesday, October 31st
School pictures were sent home on Thursday, October 18th (middle school), and Friday, October 19th (elementary school).
School Picture Retakes are:
for students who were absent on Picture Day
for families who desire a retake after receiving pictures on Thursday/Friday (10/18-19)
What to do:
Let your child's teacher know that he/she will be participating in picture re-takes.
Have your child bring back their photo package and give it to the photographer. No additional paperwork needed.
For students who were absent:
Bring in an order form with check/cash (forms available at front desk and middle school office), or order online at www.mylifetouch.com with this code: RO138066Y1.
Picture Day Dress (only for students participating)
Students are encouraged to wear a nice outfit for school pictures
All students are to have a neat, clean and modest appearance at all times, including free dress days
Girls' shorts or skirts must be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee
If leggings are worn, tops must extend past the fingertips
Tank tops must have width of three fingers
Jeans are acceptable on free dress days
Students are not to wear: torn clothes, pajamas, sweats or yoga pants, excessively tight-fitting clothes, spaghetti straps, tops that expose the midriff, clothing with cut-outs, or costume-type clothing
If there is any question that an item is inappropriate for dress, it should not be worn. Students will be required to change if clothing is not appropriate.

On Monday, November 12th, Mariners Christian School will host our annual "Salute to Veterans" event
honoring MCS Grandparents and Veterans.
We extend a special invitation to MCS Parents and Alumni who have served or who are currently serving in the military (spouses are welcome to join in the festivities). Due to space limitations, this event is not open to MCS Parents, except those mentioned above. The event will be available to view via Livestream. We will forward the link to you a few days prior to the event.
Monday, November 12, is a regular full day of school for grades TK-8th. Student dress for November 12th is Regular School Uniform or Girl/Boy Scout Uniform.
The primary reason for this email is to ask you, our parents, to forward (or hand deliver) the
enclosed invitation to your students' Grandparents and remind them of the following:

Parking:The front lot near the school entrance is designated for guests with special needs. Parking for everyone is available at the far end of the front lot, the playground blacktop, and on the street at Fischer and Airway Avenues.
Event Details: The event begins at 9:00 a.m. with a light breakfast and welcome on our new Middle School Patio behind the gym. At 10:30 a.m. our students join our guests in an assembly room for a special Veterans Day tribute which includes a guest speaker, music, and a special focus.
Please Note: Students will return to their classroom following the program as this is a regular full day of instruction.

Recently, fourth graders completed a class read aloud, The Tiger Rising. While reading this book, we studied characters and themes in our fiction unit. In Tiger Rising, wood carving was a special symbol that represented how the main character overcame challenges.
Each class discussed how we look to God as our refuge and rescuer in challenges and we were reminded of Deuteronomy 11:18 where God instructs us to write His Words on our heart.
To celebrate their growth as readers, the fourth grade classes enjoyed a morning of soap carving to create special symbols of all they've learned.
Difference Maker Program Overview

Our Difference Maker program exists to provide meaningful opportunities for our students and families to engage in a growing awareness of needs in our local community, and tangible ways to make a difference in those places. Led by our Difference Maker Program Architect Ali Bray, she works with our elementary and middle school staff to roll out these programs and walk with our students who have been awarded "Difference Maker Grants" as they take their ideas and proposals and put them into action.
As a staff, we are delighted to have all of our service projects that will launch this year be STUDENT LED.
Attached is a newsletter from Mrs. Bray that will provide the details on our first Difference Maker project that is being launched by a group of our students who are passionate about the issue of homelessness. They are working behind the scenes to collect the items needed for all of our MCS students to be able to make their own "Blessing Bag" for the homeless. They are also executing a Fall Food Drive that will serve to stock food pantries for two local organizations (S.O.S. and Project Giving Light) who serve the homeless community in powerful ways.
Thank you for supporting last week's SOCKTOBER drive and the
upcoming Fall Food Drive which will run from November 5th through the 14th. For all of the collection drives this year, your children can bring the items to be donated and drop them in their classroom's collection box.
The attached newsletter also has a section devoted to helping you cultivate conversation with your children on the topic of homelessness. We would love to hear about how those discussions go!

A great opportunity to practice this is when your family sees a homeless person out in the community ... pause and pray for God's eyes to see that person the way He sees them. So often in scripture, we see God's love as a Father. What would a parent want for their child if their child was standing homeless and alone? Allow the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart and spend a few moments praying for that person through that lens. You may never get to actually speak to them, but your prayers have power and God uses these moments to shape our hearts to be a bit more like His." Ali Bray

Early Pick-Up - Important Procedure
Please email the school no later than 12PM if you plan to pick up your child(ren) before regular dismissal due to a necessary appointment. Students may not be checked out between 2:20-2:35 (for K-3) and 2:40-2:55 (for 4th-8th), without pre-arrangement.

Calling All 8th Graders! Annual DC Photography Contest
Calling all 8th graders!
The annual Washington, D.C. photography contest is taking place October 19-26, and photos are due by Monday, November 5.
Submission details will be posted on the 8th-grade Schoology homepage.
Winning photographs will be enlarged and on display for our Veterans Day Assembly on Monday, November 12.

Middle School Shalimar Connections Club
Next Lunch Club Meetings: December 6th and 13th
Last Friday, 24 middle school students jumped into building relationships with children at The Shalimar Learning Center through the language that all kids speak - PLAY!
We have launched a "Shalimar Connections Club" where middle school students have the opportunity to plan the games, devotionals, and activities that they then get to lead at the Shalimar Learning Center. We are thrilled to be expanding our relationship with the children in the Shalimar community to also include a partnership with Think Together, the organization that runs the after school program at The Shalimar Learning Center.
Last Friday, 24 middle school students jumped into building relationships with children at The Shalimar Learning Center through the language that all kids speak - PLAY! They played ice breaker games, taught the students a special dance to "Together" (High School Musical) that was choreographed by our Theatre Arts students, and 8th grader (Delara Gitibin) led the students in a devotional that focused on their unique gifts and talents and identity in Jesus! We finished our time in the community with free play at the park in the center of the neighborhood which provided an opportunity for our students to play and connect with the kids who live there. We are ALL looking forward to our next visit in December! We are grateful for the opportunity to build these relationships and connections.
There is still plenty of opportunity for our middle school students to get involved! Any students interested in getting plugged into the Shalimar Connections Club should attend the next lunch club meetings on December 6th and 13th to plan for the December 14th Shalimar visit!
