Torah Rea ding 226     Haftarah 247
VA-YEISHEV
Jacob's favorite among his twelve sons is Joseph. The favoritism is so blatant that it causes resentment among the brothers - a resentment that is only exacerbated by Joseph's dreams of grandeur. Joseph gets his comeuppance when his brothers strip him of the
multi-colored coat given to him by his father, and throw him into a pit. He is subsequently sold by his brothers to Ishmaelites and winds up in servitude in Egypt. The brothers dip Joseph's coat in blood, leading Jacob to believe that Joseph had been killed by a beast.

The narrative of Joseph's life is interrupted by the story of Judah and his sons. Judah's eldest son married Tamar, but this son soon died. In accordance with the custom of levirate marriage, the next son, Onan, was to marry Tamar in order to produce a male heir for his deceased brother. Onan refused to be a party to this, and he too died. Judah, fearing that Tamar was the cause of both sons' deaths, was reluctant to let his youngest son marry her. Disguising herself as a cultic harlot, Tamar seduced her father-in-law, Judah, and bore twins. Judah admitted his error in not requiring his youngest son to enter in levirate marriage with Tamar.

Back in Egypt, Joseph had become the most trusted and favored servant of Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials. Joseph comes to the attention of his mistress; repeatedly rejecting her advances, she exacts revenge by accusing him of attempted rape. Joseph is imprisoned. He wins the favor of his jailer, who gives him a position of responsibility. Joseph correctly interprets the dreams of two of Pharaoh's jailed servants: the baker who will be executed, and the butler, who will return to Pharaoh's service. Joseph implores the butler not to forget him upon his release, for he has been imprisoned unfairly.

From yesterday's NYT:
Reflecting on the Holocaust
Dolly Rabinowitz was 13 years old when the Nazis invaded Hungary and began rounding up Jewish families. She was sent to Auschwitz and later ushered to and from several other concentration camps on death marches.
"Many times I woke up in the morning and there were dead bodies all around me," Ms. Rabinowitz, now 92, said. "I don't know how I survived."
On Monday, she and 50 other Holocaust survivors - mostly women - gathered in a Brooklyn studio work space to discuss the atrocities they faced.
About 36,000 Holocaust survivors live in the New York area, according to the United Jewish Appeal-Federation of Jewish Philanthropies.
The event's organizer, Freida Rothman, said she wanted to demonstrate that "we have living, breathing Anne Franks among us here in New York."
Although it is difficult for Ms. Rabinowitz to talk about her past, she said that the recent uptick in anti-Semitic hate crimes had made her feel obligated to preserve the memory of the Holocaust.
"Now again, they are breaking into synagogues and killing innocent people who are praying," she said. "The Second World War should have been a lesson to everyone."
Throughout the day, the women mingled in small groups, sharing wartime stories but also reminiscing about happy times. After lunch, everyone joined hands and danced to traditional Jewish music performed by a live band.
"I felt great," Ms. Rabinowitz said. "Yes, we had a hard past, but in the present we have freedom, we have happiness."

Re-Inventing the Bible
Thursdays at 10:30 am
Join Rabbi Stern as we discover the amazingly creative juices of  the classical rabbis! They were masters at spinning yarns, embellishing narrative, and inventing out of whole cloth to really make the Bible come alive through what they called Midrash Aggadah.
Using Louis Ginzberg's one-volume The Legends of the Bible (you can buy a used copy online for less than $10), we will contrast the biblical text with these rabbinically enhanced narratives.

For weeks, AIPAC has been asking its members to get senators to sponsor legislation that would extend sanctions to entities dealing with already sanctioned Palestinian groups, called the Palestinian International Terrorism Support Prevention Act of 2019. So far, they have 20 sponsors, but just one Democrat, Richard Blumenthal, D-Ct., who initiated the bill with Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.
Bi-partisanship, which is the hallmark of AIPAC, is becoming more difficult...And that isn why your presence at AIPAC is even more important!
