"You can express what you are going through in life. Because of dance, I’m able to share my art with my little sister. To see how she admires my craft and sees me as an inspiration means a lot to me. I hope she goes to ChiArts. She came to the Winter Dance Concert and that was the first time she saw me on stage! She’s five years old and seeing her in the front row meant so much to me. I don’t ever want to stop dancing."
In 2020, Deshawn is looking forward to his ballet class next semester that prepares dancers for professional auditions. Deshawn came to ChiArts as a novice and now as a graduating senior, he is hoping for an acceptance to the San Francisco Ballet School’s summer intensive.

“It’s the ballet school of my dreams. I've had the application date on my calendar and made sure it was the first school I applied to. Now I'm all set for my audition this January. I’m going to work my hardest to do what I need to do to make it there.”
ChiArts is much more than a school; it is a catalyst for change. Your generosity makes it possible for students like Deshawn to access tuition-free, pre-professional training in the arts.
Every day this week we highlighted a scholar-artist from each conservatory and shared their #BecauseOfChiArts story. Thank you for tuning in! If you missed a feature or would like to see the series as a whole, check out our posts on Facebook and Twitter!
