Dr. Vincent Carbone: Current Topics in Teaching Verbal Behavior to Persons with Autism

Dr. Vincent Carbone, Ed.D., BCBA-D, is a world renown Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctorate and New York State Licensed Behavior Analyst.

B.F. Skinner’s analysis of verbal behavior has inspired important research and clinical applications for teaching language to persons with autism. The purpose of this presentation is to describe some current topics in the behavior analytic approach to teaching verbal behavior and how this information can be used to improve the instruction of persons with autism.

Two important current topics in the treatment of persons with autism include Joint Stimulus Control and Selecting and Teaching Alternative Communication Methods for Non-vocal Individuals. The talk on joint control will emphasize the role of mediating behavior necessary for the learning of complex language and other skills.

The discussion of alternative communication will provide a method for selecting alternative methods and then information on how to teach both sign language and picture selection methods including speech generating devices. Each of the topics will be addressed during a half day presentations during the full day workshop. Within the discussion of each topic a review of the current research and conceptual analysis will precede an overview of clinical application.  In addition, numerous video illustrations of implementation of instructional methods in various settings will support the discussion.
