ADI Webinar next week: Navigating Control States
Many distillers are intimidated at the prospect of entering a control state, markets where the state has a monopoly on wholesale. However, in my experience control states can be one of the strongest markets for emerging brands.

Your New Favorite Brown Liquor
Long overshadowed by bourbon, American brandy is claiming its place
at the cocktail bar
By Kara Newman, The Wall Street Journal
AFTER YEARS of watching bourbon sales soar, American brandy distillers are ready to get in on the action. The first step: education.
Brandy encompasses a whole range of spirits: Cognacs and Armagnacs, distilled from (grape) wine; Calvados and other apple brandies, made from cider; and fruit brandies derived from berries and tree fruits. The most sought-after brandies are barrel-aged, yielding a liquor as brown and aromatic as any bourbon.
Traditionally, American brandy has been "a bit of an underdog," according to Thomas Pastuszak, executive wine director for the NoMad Hotel chain. In August, along with Jeff Bell, bar manager of PDT in New York and Hong Kong, Mr. Pastuszak launched Bertoux, a new California brandy intended for mixing into cocktails.

They Are Women, Hear Them Pour: 2018 "Siposium" Steers Even More Women to Bourbon
By Peggy Noe Stevens & Associates
By all counts, the fifth annual Bourbon Women's "Siposium" was a rousing success. Approximately 200 women from 23 states and Canada came together in Louisville to teach, learn and celebrate all things Bourbon. And the focus was clearly on how to bring even more women into the fold. Far beyond the requisite (and much appreciated and enjoyed) tips, tours, sips and basic sharing of experiences, this year's "Siposium" took a deep dive into the ever evolving relationship between Bourbon and women - and how central women are to the category's success.
