A letter from 2018-2019 Fellows Chair:
Reginald M. Turner
The
SRDF
in Law and Social Science program was designed to introduce undergraduate students, who come from diverse backgrounds, to the rewards and challenges of a research-oriented career in the field of law and/or social science. SRDF Fellows are paired with ABF Research Professors who mentor and involve the students in their ongoing research projects. SRDF Fellows experience a variety of activities such as law school seminars and field visits to law firms, social justice-oriented nonprofits, and criminal court rooms to become more familiar with sociolegal research and the legal system.
The celebration was filled with great speakers, including Keynote Tina Tchen
, former Assistant to President Barak Obama, Executive Director of the White House Council on Women and Girls, Chief of Staff to
First Lady Michelle Obama, and Partner in the Chicago office of Buckley Sandler LLP.
Danielle Holley-Walker,
Dean of Howard University School of Law, 1995 SRDF alum, and Fellow of the ABF, was presented with the inaugural Montgomery Research Diversity Fellowship Distinguished Alumnus Award.

Rebecca Sandefur, ABF Faculty Fellow
In early October,
Rebecca Sandefur,
ABF Faculty Fellow and Associate Professor of Sociology and Law at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, was selected by
John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation as a 2018 MacArthur Fellow and recipient of a MacArthur "Genius Grant." This honor recognizes Professor Sandefur for her creativity, originality, and dedication to groundbreaking research on inequality in the field of law, in regards to civil justice problems, and demonstrates belief in her potential for future achievements.
The
MacArthur Fellowship Program awards each honored Fellow a stipend of $625,000 over a period of five years, which can be used towards advancing knowledge in their fields, engaging in new, exciting work, or changing fields or the direction of their careers. Sandefur is one of the founders and leaders of the ABF's "Access to Justice" research initiative and her research has been an important resource for legal providers and policy makers to rely on when responding to the legal needs of the public.
Professor Sandefur's current research project focuses on exploring
kinds of civil justice problems that ordinary people experience
:
problems involving basic needs like safety, care and custody of children, environmental conditions and more
. She explores
how people think about and try to resolve their problems, and what resources are available to assist them. Sandefur also studies how legal services are delivered and how civil legal aid is organized around the country, the role of pro bono legal services, and how new programs implementing non-lawyers (individuals who are not licensed attorneys but are authorized to give legal advice) have helped to expand ordinary people's access to rights and representation under the law.
