The Design of Roxbury's Portrait of Graduate Begins
One of the small group discussions identifying characteristics we want to see in future graduates.
Similar to how our students start out, Roxbury's Portrait of a Graduate is still in its infancy and we have to learn to crawl before we can walk.
A handful of parents, staff, administrators, and community members turned out on October 10th at Lincoln/Roosevelt School for the first of three "Portrait of a Graduate" nights to generate ideas on what we want our Portrait of Graduate to look like.

Superintendent Loretta Radulic explained that the Portrait of a Graduate will be our touchstone and a jumping off point for our next strategic plan. She and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Chuck Seipp had attended a conference where a Portrait of a Graduate was discussed. "We noticed that the Portrait of a Graduate sets up a vision of what we want our children to graduate being able to do, what skills they should have. It defines what makes that comprehensive graduate, what makes a comprehensive Gael."

To that end, the district will be holding community meetings inclusive of community members, parents, students as well as meetings with the staff and administrators to try and gather as much input as possible. "By the time we get to the third session, we will have our vision of what a graduate of Roxbury looks like," shared Radulic.

Radulic added, "Creating a profile of a graduate that is aligned to a district's vision allows that vision to come alive for district stakeholders."

The next session that the community is invited to will be Tuesday, December 4th at Lincoln/Roosevelt School at 7 p.m. Click here to read more about the first session and the upcoming ones on our website under "In the News".

RHS Performing Arts Presents The Crucible this Fall at RHS - Nov 1-2
Ticket reservations are now being accepted for Roxbury High School's fall drama of The Crucible showing Thursday and Friday, November 1-2 at 7:00 p.m. at Roxbury High School at 1 Bryant Drive in Succasunna.

StageAgent.com states, "In the insular, Puritan community of 1692 Salem, Massachusetts, a group of young girls are found dancing in the woods, and immediately fall ill. When no earthly cause can be determined, the citizens of Salem suspect that some more sinister force may be at hand. As long-held grudges turn to violent disputes, humiliating secrets are exposed and disseminated, and the line between truth and pretense becomes increasingly blurry, the citizens' dogged determination to root out evil becomes more dangerous than the evil itself. When the burden of proof is invisible and the crime too terrible to name, everyone becomes a suspect and no one is safe.  The Crucible , Arthur Miller's remarkable 1963 play, remains as relevant as ever, and carries with it a stern warning: in every community torn by suspicion, the most dangerous threat may be the community itself."

Join us for an enjoyable entertaining evening. Tickets are $10 each. Click here for the ticket reservation form . Ticket reservations will automatically be held at the Box Office and can be picked up 45 minutes before the performance.

Lake Hopatcong Foundation's Floating Classroom Wins Environmental Award
The Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) awarded the Lake Hopatcong Foundation Floating Classroom an Environmental Achievement Award "for outstanding accomplishment in local environmental protection" at its 45th Annual Environmental Congress at Mercer County College in West Windsor on Oct. 12.

The Floating Classroom, a 40-foot pontoon boat dubbed "Study Hull," educated more than 1,000 visitors during its first year on Lake Hopatcong, the majority of them fourth- and fifth-grade students who boarded the vessel during the Lake Hopatcong Foundation field trip program at Hopatcong State Park in the spring.

Over the summer, weekly excursions also allowed visitors the opportunity to join an excursion on Lake Hopatcong. While on the boat, passengers learn about watersheds and lake ecology, geography and history, conducting hands-on experiments that test the lake's temperature, pH level, dissolved oxygen, and clarity. Students also get to view samples of the water through microscopes to see live phytoplankton. Click here to read more about LHF's work from Tap Into Roxbury.

The Annual Roxbury Rotary Fruit and Pie Sale is ON thru Oct 25
The Roxbury Rotary Club is taking orders for fresh fruit and pies, a yearly tradition that raises money for the organization's scholarship and other charity activities.  "We sell 900 to 1,000 cases of fruit and we sell around 150 pies," said Roxbury Rotarian Gary Ribe. "The club makes about $15,000 profit on it. The money we make goes to scholarships, Roxbury Social Services, the library and more ... Last year we gave out five scholarships."  The fruit collections can be seen and ordered online  here  through Oct. 25. Click here to read more information from Tap Into Roxbury.

It also allows people to create profiles that can include important details such as medical requirements, the presence of pets and special access codes for gates and security systems, said Roxbury Department of Public Works Director Rick Blood. "The Tardive family established Roxbury Colts football, Roxbury Colts wresting and brought youth baseball to the town around the same time frame," Spitzer said. Roxbury Firehouse Has High Hopes for Vendor Fair - Nov 3
Roxbury Fire Company 1 in Succasunna is hosting a vendor fair in November, something organizer Jennifer Markle hopes will be a successful fundraiser for the group of volunteer first-responders.  Markle, a Succasunna resident who has been a firefighter with Company 1 for almost 10 years, said the she and her colleagues would love to see at least 50 small businesses participate in the Nov. 3 event.  The fair will take place in the firehouse on Main Street, said Markle - who also serves as manager of the building's rental hall. It will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The firefighters are considering expanding the event to include food trucks and other attractions outside the firehouse - maybe even getting township permission to close Main Street for a bit, she said. Hundreds of Lake Hopatcong Cleanup Volunteers Needed - Nov 3
As the Lake Hopatcong community prepares for a 60-inch drawdown this fall - done by the state once every five years - the Lake Hopatcong Foundation is calling for volunteers to help remove debris from the exposed lake bed during a Lake Hopatcong Lake-Wide Cleanup to be held on Saturday, Nov. 3.

This year, the Lake Hopatcong Foundation is working in partnership with the Lake Hopatcong Commission to again bring residents together to remove accumulated litter and help make the lake a healthier place.  To coordinate the removal of all the debris, the Foundation will work in partnership with the Morris and Sussex Counties' Clean Communities programs, as well as the Departments of Public Works in Hopatcong, Jefferson, Mt. Arlington, and Roxbury.  Bridgestone Tire will be recycling tires pulled from the lake.

The Foundation is trying to recruit 40-to-50 team leaders and hundreds of volunteers. Local groups and organizations are encouraged to assemble cleanup teams. Click here for more information from the Morris County Government website.

Growing Roxbury tradition: Roxbury's Home for the Holidays Street Festival
The third annual "Home For The Holidays" event is coming to Roxbury Township.

Of course, the event is held in December. This year, it is planned for Saturday, Dec. 1. December is, if nothing else, always unpredictable. Last year, the weather was fairly mild, and a good time was seemed to be had by all. But, it's a big risk. If the weather is two degrees, or if there's an ice, sleet or snow storm, this event could easily be a complete bust. We guess that's not really any different than its companion event, Olde Suckasunny Day, held each September. Click here to read more from the Roxbury Register.

Vendor/crafter registrations are still be accepted the Saturday, December 1st event.  Go to  www.roxburynj.us/holidays  to get registration form.

New this year: A contest for the most festive holiday-decorated/themed vendor booth. The winner gets a free booth at next year's event.  This family-friendly holiday street fair will run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. along Main Street in Succasunna by the Roxbury Public Library and churches.  Stockton Carriage Tours will be back offering free carriage rides with jingle-belled horses - sponsored by the Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce and the Roxbury Rotary Club.
