Derry Township Supervisors Move to Next Phase of Plans for Community Center
The Derry Township Board of Supervisors voted to proceed to the Construction Documents and Bidding Services Phase of the proposed Community Center Project following a presentation on the design development drawings and the project budget at its meeting on Tuesday, October 9, 2018. The new community center would replace the aging facility that has served the community since 1963.

The board took this action after five years of planning and community input and specialized consultants who developed a market analysis, financial planning tools, and a business plan that explored operational costs and revenue projections.

The proposed $32 million Center would feature 113,000 square feet of space for events and programs and three pools for aquatic activities including an indoor leisure pool, an indoor 50-meter pool, and an outdoor seasonal pool. The Center would provide a youth/teen center, an indoor walking track, a fitness center, a full-size gym, a café, child watch center, meeting rooms, and space for the Senior Center and People Movers senior transportation service.


Notice of Public Hearings
The Board of Supervisors will conduct two public hearings on Tuesday, November 13, 2018, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Derry Township Municipal Complex, 600 Clearwater Road, Hershey.

Public comment will be received on proposed Ordinance No. 708, which would amend Chapter 225 (Zoning), Section 225-905 (Zoning Map Amendments) to change the zoning classification of 65.893 acres of land located east of Middletown Road, north of Kaylor Road, and south and west of Stoverdale Road from a Conservation classification to a Planned Campus West classification and an Active-Adult Community Overlay classification, and to change the zoning classification of 53.531 acres of land identified as Tax Parcel No. 24-029-049, located north of Route 322, west of Route 39/Hersheypark Drive, and south of East Main Street to an Active-Adult Community Overlay classification. 

Upon conclusion of the first hearing, the second hearing will be held to receive public comment on proposed Ordinance No. 709, which would amend Chapter 225 (Zoning) of the Code of the Township of Derry to make revisions to regulations described in Article II (Form and Function); Article III (Zoning Districts and Overlays); Article IV (Performance Standards and Supplementary Regulations); Article V (Conditional Uses and Special Exceptions); and Article XI (Definitions) as each article relates to Active-Adult Communities and associated uses and dimension and bulk development requirements.  
October is National Fire Prevention Month
Do you have working smoke alarms?
Statistics show that three out of five deaths as the result of home fires occur in homes that do not have working smoke alarms. Fire Safety education can save your life.

October is National Fire Prevention month. The Hershey Volunteer Fire Department has been busy visiting schools and businesses to provide fire safety education. They have a fire prevention trailer and offer classes for children and adults for home and workplace fire prevention. Visit their website for a description of classes offered and to initiate the scheduling process.

The Safety, Health & Consumer Council has created a Residential Fire Prevention and Safety Guide to help you understand and avoid common fire safety mistakes. Take steps today to prevent a fire in your home.
Volunteers Are Needed to Help to Plant Trees
We know how good trees are for the community and the environment, be a good citizen and provide your assistance planting trees.

Derry Township and the Derry Environmental Action Committee are planting 33 large trees on Saturday, November 3. The trees will be planted in Shank Park along the Jonathan Eshenour trail.

Volunteers will meet at the lower parking lot of Shank Park, Bullfrog Valley Road, at 8:45 a.m. Please bring a ground shovel and gloves. Volunteers are asked to indicate their participation by sending an email to jrf21@psu.edu. Please call Chuck Gassert at 717-566-5058 with questions.

Hershey's Fall Family Festival is Saturday
Don't Miss Chocotoberfest in Downtown Hershey
The 4th annual Choctoberfest will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. in ChocolateTown Square Park, located on the corner of
Chocolate and Cocoa Avenues in downtown Hershey.

This family friendly fall festival features great live music, local craft beer, chocolate, and delicious food from downtown restaurants, and offers an array of family and children’s activities. Click here for a listing of bands, food and beverage vendors, and retail and artisan chocolate vendors.

Choctoberfest is free and open to the public, with food and beverages available for purchase.
Come to the Ultimate Children's Halloween Event
Shank Park Halloween
Saturday, October 20, you'll want to bring your children to an evening of Halloween fun in Shank Park, Bullfrog Valley Road. Activities include pumpkin decorating, inflatable games, face painting, a candy hunt, s'mores by the campfire, and a movie featuring Disney Pixar Coco.

Crafts and games will be offered from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The movie begins at 7:00 p.m. A donation of $5 per vehicle is suggested. Concessions will be available for purchase.
Hershey Area All Things Diversity Welcomes Dr. Paul Haidet to Present on Unconscious Bias
Hershey Area All Things Diversity presents Dr. Paul Haidet on November 14 to discuss unconscious bias. Unconscious biases are social stereotypes about certain groups of people that individuals form outside of their own conscious awareness.

Paul Haidet is a general internist, health-services researcher, educator, husband, father, and lover of jazz music. He received his undergraduate and medical degree from Penn State University and completed a residency in internal medicine at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State University Hospital. He inaugurated the role of Director of Medical Education Research and services as Professor of Medicine, Humanities, and Public Health Sciences at the Penn State College of Medicine. Dr. Haidet has published widely on a variety of topics related to teaching, communication, and the humanistic care of patients, and he has won a number of regional, national, and international awards for his work. His current interest is in the improvisational aspect of patient-physician communication, and he is using his lifelong interest in jazz to create new educational methods and models to foster advanced communication skills among physicians at multiple levels.

This is the third year that the sessions on diversity and inclusion have been organized through a collaborative effort by the Township of Derry, Downtown Hershey Association, Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, The Hershey Company, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, and The Derry Township School District. The program is underwritten by Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine, The Hershey Company and Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company.

The event will be held from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. on the main level of The Hershey Story located at 63 West Chocolate Avenue, Hershey. A light supper and dessert will be provided to attendees. The sessions are free, but seating is limited, and advance registration is required.  Register Here
Friends of the Hershey Public Library to Show Silent Horror Film
A Friends Film Special will present "Nosferatu", a 1922 unrated silent movie version is a classic horror film on Sunday, October 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue, Hershey.

It's best for viewers age 16 and older. No registration required. Snacks will be provided by the Friends.
Hershey Public Library Holds Community Blood Drive
A Community Blood Drive will be held on Monday, October 22 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue, Hershey.

Please come to donate a pint of blood. Bring ID with you and eat within four hours of donating. An appointment is not required. 
Edible Book Contest to be Held During National Friends of the Library Week
National Friends of the Library Week is October 21 to 27. An Edible Book Contest will be held on Friday, October 26 from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. at the Hershey Public Library, 701 Cocoa Avenue, Hershey.

Design an edible creation based on the wonderful world of books! Entry drop off is from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

View and vote from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. for your favorite literary-inspired culinary creations!

Register in advance by October 24 to enter your own edible book. Click here for registration forms and contest rules .  Entries may be entered as Adult (18+), Youth (8-17), or Group or Organization. All contestants’ names must be on the registration form.

Submit your own entry or just stop by, enjoy refreshments, and cast your ballot to select a winner for the three categories.

Teen Book Discussion on "Frankenstein"

The Hershey Public Library is celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley's classic novel, Frankenstein  with a discussion on the book, its impact and appeal, and successful longevity, as a young adult read.

Hershey Lions Recycle for Sight - A Global Crusade to Conquer Blindness
The World Health Organization has estimated that globally, approximately 1.3 billion people live with some form of vision impairment and that the number of blind people in the world could double in the next 25 years. To combat the leading causes of blindness and assist in preserving vision, the Hershey Lions Club is participating in Lions World Sight Day and the Worldwide Week of Service in Sight to heighten awareness and education about sight preservation and preventable blindness.

The Hershey Lions Club will be joining in this global event by collecting used eyeglasses in the community.
 
Community members are encouraged to deposit prescription eyeglasses that are no longer needed at any of the Hershey Lions’ eyeglass collection locations in the area: Lebanon Valley Family Medicine, St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Northwest Savings Bank, Penn State University Physicians Group, Cocoa Family Medicine, Grace United Methodist Church, Karns, and the Mohler Senior Center. 

Eyeglasses collected will be matched to the needs of individuals around the world.   

Since the Hershey Lions Club’s chartering in 1944, its members have worked on a variety of projects in the local community including helping the visually impaired with eye exams and eyeglasses, collecting used eyeglasses, and many other projects.  For more information about the Hershey Lions Club visit  www.hersheylions.org
Learn About the History of Indiantown Gap at the Women's Civic Club of Hershey Meeting
The Women's Civic Club of Hershey will meet on Tuesday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. Chip Koons, a Veterans Administration Cemetery representative will speak about the history of Indiantown Gap and its operations. Learn to Skate with the Hershey Figure Skating Club
Hershey Figure Skating Club is offering learn to skate classes this fall. The programs teach the FUNdamentals of ice skating and provide a foundation for figure skating, ice hockey, and speedskating. With six progressive levels, skaters will be able to confidently advance to more specialized areas of
skating. We also offer ice hockey instruction, taught without a puck in order for skaters to learn the proper skating techniques for the game and how to be more proficient and agile on the ice.

Parking is free. All classes are at the Hersheypark
Arena.

"Swan Songs" Concert Features Works of Brahms and Shubert
Noted New York City-based soprano Jennifer Groves and Central Pennsylvania’s own Beverly Butts on clarinet will present works of Brahms and Shubert at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, November 18 in the sanctuary at Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 East Derry Road, Hershey. Ms. Groves and Ms. Butts will be accompanied at the piano by Sean McCarthy, Derry Church’s Director of Music. 

In the final years of his life, Brahms fell in love one last time, with the clarinet. His Sonata in E-flat contains some of most beautiful melodies you’ll ever hear, performed by superb clarinetist Beverly Butts. Toward the end of his life, Schubert wrote his very last song cycle, the beloved Swan Songs to be performed by acclaimed New York-based soprano Jennifer Groves.

The concert is part of the church’s 2018-19 Arts Alive Cultural Series. A free-will offering will be received. Handicapped parking and an elevator are available.

Hershey Community Chorus to Perform "Harps of Gold" Christmas Concert
The Hershey Community Chorus will be performing its Christmas Concert,  “Harps of Gold” , in two churches this year. On Friday, December 14, 2018, at 7:30 p.m., The Hershey Community Chorus will perform in the Sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, 64 W. Chocolate Avenue, Hershey. On the following Sunday, December 16, 2018, at 3:00 pm, the Chorus will give a second concert in the Sanctuary of Trinity United Methodist Church, 210 W. Main Street, Hummelstown.

Two new arrangements will be presented this year. Virg Hostetler of Hummelstown, is writing a piece for choir and bassoon, a medley of Christmas carols and songs. James Hoffmann, Musical Director of the Chorus, is writing an arrangement of  “In the Bulb There is a Flower”  for choir and harp.

Admission to these performances is $18.00 for adults, $15.00 for seniors and groups, and $9.00 for children 6 to 12 years of age. Children under 6 are admitted free. Tickets can be purchased from any Chorus member, by emailing a request to info@HersheyCommunityChorus.org or calling (717) 508-4400.
