YRBS Updates
DPI has a new system for the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, including new software and standardized survey dates and versions. The improvements should streamline the YRBS process, improve the usefulness of local data, and reduce survey burden on schools. Going forward, the survey will only be offered every other spring (January to March 2019, 2021, etc.). Schools wishing to collect YRBS data during the spring 2019 window can register from October through March 15 to take the survey any time from January 7, 2019 through March 29, 2019.
Schools are encouraged to collaborate with local health departments, CESAs, and other local stakeholders who can help coordinate local data collection efforts. Registration materials are available through the Conducting A YRBS website. Schools who wish to retrieve their old YRBS data (meaning anything prior to the 2018-19 school year) from the outgoing system can find a link to the old OYRBS system on the same webpage, under the "Reports and Results" section. Schools wishing to retrieve old reports are encouraged to do so during the 2018-19 school year. After that point, the old system will be archived and it will be more difficult to retrieve such data.
Please remember that if your high school has been identified and contacted by DPI as a CDC/State of Wisconsin sample school, your participation is necessary to produce official Wisconsin statistics.

Restorative practices is an emerging social science that studies how to strengthen relationships between individuals as well as social connections within communities.

School Safety Drills
From the DOJ-Office of School Safety
The Wisconsin State Legislature passed, and the governor signed 2017 Wisconsin ACT 143 into law in March 2018. Act 143 requires that before January 1, 2019, and before each January 1 thereafter, each school board and the governing body of each private school shall ensure that, at each school building regularly occupied by pupils, pupils are drilled, at least annually, in the proper response to a school violence event in accordance with the school safety plan in effect for that school building. The person having direct charge of the school building at which a drill is held shall submit a brief written evaluation of the drill to the school board or governing body of the private school within 30 days of holding the drill.
In order to comply with ACT 143 the safety drills must also be conducted after March 22, 2018 when the requirement was written into legislation. A number of requests have been made to the Office of School Safety requesting guidance of how a safety drill should be conducted and documented as required by ACT 143. Below are considerations for a drill design and an example of a brief written evaluation that will be submitted to the Office of School Safety. Many schools are already conducting safety drills, the Office of School Safety does not require a change to procedures already in place as long as they meet the requirements of ACT 143.

WI 21st CCLC Grant Applications Now Available
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is pleased to announce that applications for 21
st
Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) grants are now being accepted for the 2019-20 school year. The 21
st
CCLC grant is a federal grant that funds after school programs across the state of Wisconsin. The purposes of the program are to:
- Provide opportunities for academic enrichment to help students, particularly students attending low-performing schools, to meet challenging state academic standards
- Offer students a broad array of additional services, programs, and activities designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program of participating students
- Offer the families of students served by community learning centers opportunities for active and meaningful engagement in their children's education, including opportunities for literacy and related educational development
Public school districts, private schools, charter schools, and community-based organizations (including faith-based organizations) targeting students enrolled in schools eligible for Title I, school wide programs are invited to apply.
Applications are due on or before 4:00 PM on February 22, 2019. Information about the application process and supportive materials are available on the DPI's 21st CCLC website at:
