NWABR's newest conference is in its second year!  We are once again co-presenting this conference with the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (PNCACRP).  This conference is designed for clinical researchers and professionals who have the role of ensuring the ongoing integrity of research within their institutions.

Changing Education and Outreach Programs to Build Trust
changeAfter a summer of program reviews NWABR has decided to refresh and realign some of our education and community outreach programs to more closely reflect NWABR's mission.  

NWABR's mission is to promote the public's trust in biomedical research, and its ethical conduct.


This realignment means that NWABR will no longer be offering the following three programs:  
  • the Student BioExpo, 
  • the Middle School Essay, Poster and Video Contest, and 
  • the Community Conversation Series. 
As these programs close we want to acknowledge our thanks to the thousands of students, teachers, mentors, judges, speakers, volunteers, funders, and donors who have participated in and also helped to provide these programs.

While these three programs are ending NWABR is still committed to finding ways to work with students and the public to better understand biomedical research, the research process and the ethical underpinnings of the same.  This revamped communication role is essential component of building public trust in biomedical research.  

There is also a chance that another agency will take over the Student BioExpo program and we will let our stakeholders know about this, one way or the other, once confirmed.

Over the next few weeks and months we will be undertaking a needs assessment in order to seek your input into how we can all work together to build public trust. 

As part of the needs assessment process we will soon be seeking your input.  Please keep a look out - for opportunities to both comment on and help shape this new approach!

Departure of Janis Wignall, NWABR staff and friend

We want to acknowledge Janis Wignall, BioExpo and Tech Manager, a she leaves NWABR.  Her departure comes with the closing of the BioExpo program, which Janis co-founded in 2000 while at Immunex with staff emeritus Jeanne Chowning. 

Janis leaves NWABR with over 25 years of experience and excellence in scientific research and science education. At NWABR Janis managed the Student BioExpo program with heart and passion for educators, their students and science mentors.  To the whole staff team she contributed her gentle wisdom and expertise in research.   We will miss her. 
 
Janis spent her first 10 years as a research molecular biologist at Immunex, a Seattle biotechnology company; her second 10 years as an award-winning K-12 science education educator for Immunex; was awarded in 2000 a KCTS Golden Apple Award, a state level award for education from the WA Governor Gary Locke and Terry Bergeson, Superintendent of Public Instruction in WA for contributions to science education. In later years Janis was a founding board member for Seattle Biotech Legacy Foundation, now Sustainable Path Foundation which promotes sustainability and health in the Puget Sound Region. Janis has 22 publications including papers in distinguished journals such as Science, Nature, EMBO and Cell.  
 
Janis will continue her work at the Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering and pursue matters of social and environmental justice.

Love the interface of science and theater? Me too.  Every year Infinity Box presents a festival of original short plays, created by a scientist/playwright team.  This year the teams work explores how augmented and virtual (and other?) reality might affect us and how we live our lives.

Following each staged reading, a scientist leads a discussion about the science and issues raised by the works.
